of the sink drain opening. Insuch installation, it-is also customary to providea metalabacked sealing ring which is pressed 1 up-into sealing engagement under the-sinkas by means ofi jack screwshaving threading engagement in the upper-endof thegarbage grinder housing.
As evident, the installation of'suchgarbage grinder is a two-man operation, requiring one man to hold the garbage-grinder and the other man to-thread the'sink- One man may flange into the garbage grinder housing. make-the installation, but, to do so, he mustprovidea box or like support on which-the grinder rests-while he screws in the sink. flange, A typicalsinkmounting ofthe character referred-to is illustrated'in the patent of John Drew Pat. No. 2,657,397, grantedunder. date of 'Nov. 3, 1953.
With the toregoingvin mind, itis-a primary objectof: this invention to provide a. novel formof sink mounting for garbage grindersrwhich can be. easily and quickly accomplished aswa one-man job without proppinglup of the grinder as above explained.-
It is anotherobject ofthis invention to provide a novel form of sink flange assembly whichmay be initiallymounted-on thersink, such assembly. providing readily; accessible bayonet-type mountingmeans. which requires. simply an upward-lifting of-the grinder andthen a few.
degrees rotation thereof.
It is another object ofthisv invention :to provide a novel 1 form ofsink flange assembly from whichathe garbage I grinder is ;hung and l which includes a. resilient packing I ring between said assembly and grinder which functions,
not only as ajoint seal, .butralso as a cushioningmeans to minimize transmission of vi-brationsand grinding noises fromthe grinder to the. sink. proper.
It is another object of this invention to provide a.- quick-connect sink mounting in which the. aforesaid pack-l ing ring additionally provides .a resilient seat 'forthesink stopper, which stopper, in wel-lknown manner, may be employed .to energize and de-energize the grinder motor while permitting fiowro-f water through the sink drain opening and to seal the sink drain opening when the sink is to be used in itsintended manner to hold watertherein.
Other objectssandladvantagesiof the present invention will become apparent as the following description proceeds.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, the invention, then, comprises the features herein- Patented July 26, 1960 2 r after fully described and-particularly pointed'out'in; the; claims, the following description and the annexed draw ings setting forth in-detail acertain illustrative embodiment-of the invention, thisbeing indicative, however, of; but one of the variousways-in which the principleof the invention may be employed,
In said annexed drawing: V Fig. 1 is a side elevation viewshowinga ganbage-grinder as'install'ed through the expedient-of-the present quick connect sink mounting; i
Fig; 2 is averticalcross-section view through theaxis oft-hesink drainopeningand of the upper" portion of the garbage grinder housing, the garbage grinder being shownin its suspended position from the sink flange assem-bly; and
lig. 3 is a top-plan viewiofithe mountingtring which constitutes an elementof'the sinkflange assembly;
Referring first to Fig. l, thereference'character-S denotes the bot-tomof asink from whichthe garbage grinder 1 is suspended, said garbagegrinder, as Well? known in the art, comprisinga tubular upper housing- 2' which provides a refuse-receivingchamber 3 there-- within. Extending across the lower end of-said chamber Sista rotary impeller 4.that is operative, in cooperation wi-tha surrounding, internally grooved shredder ringto comminute refuse. thus introduced intothe grinding chamber 3, said impeller 4 being keyed on-thedrive shaft 6.0f' electric motor 7". The motor housing 8- is hungfromthe'bottom of the. upper housing las by means of a screw-actuated split clamp 9. The motor housing- Sis formed with a discharge port IO-thrO-ugh -Which, by way. of conventional pipe fittings and trap, the comminuted refuseisco-nducted into the sewer with the assistance of water that'fiowsfromthe sink'S into the" garbage grinder 1 during the grinding-operation.
Said upper housing 2; is provided-with a port 11 to which-the drain hose of a dishawashingmachine is adapt-- ed to be connected, and said upper housing usually-has mounted thereon a switch box. 12.- provided with a manually operated Von-ofi switch 14; Inl series with switch' V 14 is;a;con. iO1Lswitch .15 thatis dBSlgHEditQ beiactuated 'by means of the radial y movable I plunger-16 (see; Fi

In they present case, the quickfconnectsink-mounting comprises .a sink ilange assembly; including; arsink flange 20 that has a ,rfld allyoutwardly extending flange lllthat' overliesthe margin of. the sink drain-openingfifis Theportion of vthe sinkflange 20;;whichextends downwardly through the sink drain opening is formed:with*a-:p'eriph eral groove, in which. is disposed a retainer: ring-24::(prfera-bly in .the for m .of ,a snap ring), whichasterves vt sup -iport/the mounting ring 25. Said-mountingring 25 andfi themetabbacked sealing ring 26-27, are first slipped'i oyer the sink, flange 2 0 beforesaid snap ;ringflttriszthusg installed. V
By turning the several jack-screws 2.8.= that;aresathreadeds into said ,=mounting ring 25, the"metalrbackedtsealing ring 2&2? is pressed upwardlyinto firm, sealing en-r. ent; under the. marginaliportioniiotzthe sinktdrainw wai i g; t e n PI n iMcwW ng to provide; ani'labutoi ment shoulder for exerting such clamping pressure. Thus, the flange 21 of said sink flange 20 is drawn down tightly against the margin of the sink drain opening. If 'de-' sired, and is the customary practice, a paste or calls-like material may be applied around the sink drain opening, whereby a water-tight seal is established in that region. Of course, the rubber ring 27 also is arranged for deformation so as to establish water-tight joint with the sink S.
As best shown in Fig. 3, said mounting ring 25 is formed with a circular series of keyhole slots 29, herein three in number, the wide portions 30 of such slots being larger than the heads 31 of the hanger screws 32 that are threaded into the upper end of the garbage grinder housing 2. The garbage grinder housing 2 is counterbored to receive the rubber-like packing ring 34. The narrow portions 35 of said keyholde slots 29 which intersect the wider portions are of such size as to accommodate the shanks of said screws 32 but smaller than the heads 31 thereof.
From the foregoing, it is clear that with the headed hanger screws 32 unscrewed somewhat from the position shown in Fig. 2, the garbage grinder 1 is installed simply and quickly by raising the same until the heads 31 of said screws 32 pass through the wide portions 30 of the keyhole slots 29 whereupon just a few degrees rotation of the grinder 1 is required to position the heads 31 over the narrow portions 35 of said keyhole slots. Thereafter, as the hanger screws 32 are tightened, the flange 36 of the packing ring 34 is deformed between the mounting ring 25 and the upper end of the garbage grinder housing 2, and the lower edge of the sink flange extends into an annular recess formed in said packing ring to form a resilient annular seat 37 with which the frusto-conical seat of the control cover 17 makes sealed engagement more readily than it would with the metal seat ordinarily provided on the sink flange 20.
As previously mentioned, said resilient packing ring 34 has a many-fold function, namely, to establish a fluidtight joint between the sink flange assembly and the garbage grinder 1, to provide a resilient seat 37 for the garbage grinder control cover 17, and to provide a resilient joint between the grinder 1 and the sink flange assembly so as to minimize the transmission of vibration and grinding noises to the sink S.
The mounting ring aforesaid, may be fabricated from sheet stock, steel or bronze, for example, and preferably is formed with a peripheral reinforcing flange 38 to prevent development of waviness therein by the forces applied at circumferentially spaced regions by the jack screws 28 and by the hanger screws 32.
While the present invention as herein disclosed contemplates the provision of the keyhole slots 29 in mounting ring 25 and hanger screws 32 screwed in the grinder housing 2, it is to be understood that, if desired, the screws 32 may be screwed upwardly into ring 25 with their heads 31 at the bottom and the keyhole slots 29 may be formed in a flange at the upper end of housing 2.
Other modes of applying the principle of the invention may be employed, change being made as regards the details described, provided the features stated in any of the following claims, or the equivalent of such, be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention:
1. Garbage grinder suspension means comprising a sink flange adapted to be inserted through a sink drain opening with its top flange overlying the margin of such opening; said sink flange adjacent its lower end having a grinder mounting ring engaged with a shoulder of said sink flange; a sealing ring disposed to underlie the margin of such opening; screw means bearing on said mounting ring to press said sealing ring up against the margin of such opening and to draw the top flange down against the margin of such opening; said mounting ring being formed with a series of circumferentially extending key- 4. hole slots for supporting a garbage grinder; and a corresponding series of headed screw members extending upwardly from the grinder to pass upwardly through the wide portions of such slots and to overlie the narrow portions of such slots when the grinder is lifted and the screw heads circumferentially so positioned.
