2 Claims. c1. zen-s3 This invention relates to sewing machines and more particularly to sewing machines in which one of the shafts thereof is equipped with an adjustable flange coupling by use of which the timing of an oscillatory mechanism driven by said shaft may be adjusted, and the primary object of the present invention is to provide an improved device of this character.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved coupl'mg device having indicia whereby the relative adjusunent of the parts may readily be observed.
Having in :mind the above and other objects that will be evident from an understanding of this disclosure, the invention comprises the devices, combinations and arrangements of parts as illustrated in the presently preferred embodiment of the invention which is hereinafter set forth in such detail as to enable those skilled in the art readily to understand the function, operation, construction and advantages of it when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which:

Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is an exploded perspective view of the parts of the subject adjustable flange coupling, and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
The sewing machine, to which the present invention is shown applied, comprises a bed 16 from one end of which rises a standard (not shown) of an over-hanging bracket-arm 17 terminating in a head 18. A plurality of bearings, one of which is shown at 19, are supported by the bracket-arm 17 and rotatably support a main arm-shaft 21, the shaft 21 being driven by a means not shown. I
The head 18 has a needle bar frame 22 which oscillates in timed relation with a four-motion feed-dog, not shown. The frame 22 carries a reciprocatory needle bar 23 having the usual needle 24. The frame 22 also has a vertically apertured bearing lug 26 which slidably mounts a top feed-bar 27 carrying at its lower end a feeding foot 28 which is adapted to cooperate with the needle 24 and the lower feed-dog (not shown) to feed the work.
The upper end of the top feed-bar 27 is provided with a cross-pin 29 which is slidingly disposed within a forked free end (not shown) of a feed-lift lever 31.
Pivotally carried by the lever 31 is a pivot-pin 32 of a bell- crank having arms 33 and 34 of which the arm 33 a is pivotally connected to the lower end of a link 36. The
' is pivoted one end of a pitman 41. The other end of the pitman 41 terminates in a strap 42 into which is press fitted a bearing bushing 43.
2,944,845 Patented July 12, 19619 The inner surface of the bushing 43 rides on the external surface of an eccentric 44 formed integral with a guide plate 46 which slides in a grooved guide way 47 formed in a flange 48 of a driver 49. The driver 49 turnably carries an adjuster 51 controlled by a spring 52 one end of which is held by a collar 53 which in turn is secured to the-driver 49 by a set screw 54.
The mechanism hereinbefore described is old and further details regarding the same may be 'found by reference to United States Patents Nos. 2,445,297., and 2,128,031.
The prior art shows mechanisms in which a driver, similar to driver 49,, is secured directly to a driving shaft, similar to shaft 21. In the present invention the driver 49 is secured to the shaft 21 by means of an adjustable flange coupling 55. To accomplish a set screw 56, carried by the flange 48 of the driver 49, engages a cut 61 formed in the outer portion of a cylindrical sleeve 62 which surrounds the shaft 21. The end of the sleeve 62 opposite the cut 61 has a flange member 63, of which the vouter circumference has an indicium 64. The remaining portion of the outer circumference of the flange 63 is serrated by a plurality of axially extending equallysized and equally-spaced notches or .lugs 66, and the flange 63 has two radially disposed threaded holes 67.

The collar 73 is secured to the said shaft 21 by set screws 77 (only one of which is shown) screwed into radially disposed threaded holes 78 and 79. The collar 73 also has two pairs of oppositely disposed threaded holes 81, each hole of which extends parallel to a chord of the circumference of the collar 73. Reference to Fig. 2 shows that the two coupling parts, namely, the flange 63 and the collar 73 have the same internal and external diameters and are arranged in side face-to-face contact. Also the notches 66 and 76 are equally spaced and are of equal size. Thus, the notches 66 on the flange 63 may be positioned to register with the notches 76 on the collar 73.
The serrated flange 63 is adjustably coupled to the serrated collar 73 by a pair of arcuate plates 83-83. To accomplish this each of the arcuate plates 8383 has a circumferentially extending slot 84 adapted to receive a screw 89 threaded into one of the holes 67 in the flange 63. Also each of the plates 83-83 has an inwardly disposed skirt 86 which rests against the outer face of the flange 63. Each skirt 86 terminates in an inner curved edge 87 which is disposed adjacent to the outer curved surface of the sleeve 62. The inner surface of each of the plates 83 is serrated with a plurality of axially extending notches 88 which are the same size and register with notches 66 of the flange 63 and with the notches 76 of the collar 73. Each of the plates 83 is secured to the collar 73 by a pair of screws 91 passing through a pair of holes 92 after which the screws 91 are threaded into the holes 81.
In normal service the indicia 64 and 74 are collinear and the plates 3383 span between and are secured to the flange 63 and the collar 73 by screws 89 and 91. Preferably the screws 89-89 will pass midway between the two ends of the slots 84-84. If it becomes desirable to adjust the angular relationship or the timing between the shaft 21 and the operation of the top feed-bar 27 and feeding foot 28, all of the screws 89 and 91 will be loosened after which the flange 63 may be turned relatively to the collar 73, this being done within the limits of the movement of the screws 89 in the slots 84. When proper adjustment has been made, the screws 89 and 91 threaded hole and an outer cylindrical surface, andv a plurality of equally sized and equally spaced axially extending notches on the outer cylindrical surface of said flange member; said collar member located adjacent to said flange member and said collar member having a plurality of threaded holes and having an outer cylindrical surface, and a plurality of axially extending notches on the outercylindrical surface of said collar member, said last named notches being equal in size and spaced the same as the notches on said flange member; an arcuate plate spanning portions of the outer cylindrical surface of said flange member and said collar member, the inner surface of said plate being provided with a plurality of notches meshing with the notches on the outer surfaces of said flange member and said collar member, and said plate being provided with a slotted hole and a pair of cylindrical holes; one screw passing through said slot in said plate and threaded into said flange member; and a plurality of screws passing through said cylindrical holes in said plate and threaded into the ]face, 'an 'outer cylindrical surface and a pair of threaded holes in'said collar member. holes entering said outer cylindrical surface; an indicium and a plurality of equally-sized and equally-spaced axially extending notches on the outer cylindrical surface of said flange; a collar having a side-face placed in side-byside relation with the side-face of said flange, said collar having an outer cylindrical surface and two pairs of spaced threaded holes entering said last outer cylindrical surface; an indicium and a plurality of axially extending notches on the outer cylindrical surface of said collar, said last named notches being equal in size and spaced the same as the notches on said flange; a pair of arcuate plates spanning portions of the outer cylindrical surfaces of said flange and said collar, the inner surface of each of said plates being provided with a plurality of notches meshing with the notches on the outer surfaces of said flange and said collar, and each of said plates being provided with a slotted hole and a pair of cylindrical holes, one screw passing through each of said slots in said plates and threaded into the holes in said flange; and a plurality of screws passing through said cylindrical holes in said plates and threaded into the holes in said collar.
