First, to provide a box or container foricigarett'es in l the formV of a pocket package in which a side of' the box may be opened to provide an ash receptacle without destroying the cigarette retaining characteristics of the package.
Second, to provide a box type cigarette package with a swinging top and a collapsible wall which can be pulled out after the top is open to provide a convenient ash n, 2,944,555 Patented July Vl2, 1960 Fig. 9 is a fragmentary side elevational view of a package erected as in Fig. 8 with parts broken away.
The cigarette box and blank shown in Figs. land 2 is l' made of light weight cardboard or box board of the type currently used in crush proof pocket packages or -boxes for cigarettes. The box and the blank shown in Fig. 2 have an integral back Wall 1, bottom wall 2, front wall 3 and top wall 4. A short back cover wall portion 5 is connected between the top Vwall 4 and the back wall 1V and all of these walls are hingedly or bendably connected along rfold lines indicated by the'dotted score lines 6. The
sides of the .back wall 1 are hingedly connected at 7 to inner side wall flaps 8 which have ldownwardly inclined upper edges 9Vfor'med by'full cuts or slits in the blank. Above the upper" edges 9 the'continuationof the-inner side wall flaps 8`fform inner 'cover end vvflaps 10 hingedly receptacle separate from the cigarette containing portions of the box.
Third, to provide a cigarette box lhaving a collapsible and extendable ash receiving pocket which can be assembled and erected on existing cigarette box forming machines. i
Fourth, to provide a modified form of `cigarette Vbox which can be erected from a single integral blank of light cardboard or box board to provide cigarette'containing section and a collapsible and extensible ash receiving receptacle. y i
Fifth, to provide a cigarette box capable of` being opened and closed a number of times in the normal use of a cigarette package and furtherprovided with extensible walls forming an ash receptacle which can be opened when the top of the box is opened and which is retained in closed position by the boxtop when the box is closed. Other objects and advantages ofthe inventionwill be apparent from a considerationA of the following description and claims. The drawingsgof which there are three sheets, illustrate two highly practical forms of the package and three methods of erecting them. i

connected at 11 tothe sides of the back cover wall portion 5. The upper edges of the inner cover side fiaps lll are hingedlyconnected aty 12 to cover tuck aps 13 sep-V arated from the top Wall 4 by the slits 1`4.
The upper edge of the'top wall 4 is hingedly connected to a front cover flap 15 having outer end cover flaps'lV attached to its ends and an inner front cover flap 17V attached to its upper edge. The upper edges of the outer end cover aps 16 are inclined downwardly parallel to the upper edges 9 of the inner side wall flanges 8 to abut thereagains't Vwhen the package is erected. The front cover flaps'15 and 17 and theouter end'cover aps 16 are provided with adhesive coatings indicated generally at 18 and the cover portion ofthe box is folded and erected into a swingable cover generally indicated lat 19 in Fig. 1 in a well known manner so that the details of the cover form no part of the present invention except as they coact with* the other elements of the box and'packa'ge to be described.
The lower edges ofthe inner side wall aps 8 are hingedly connected at 20 to bottom tuck flaps 21 separated from the remainder of the blank by cuts or slits 22. The sides of the front wall panel 3v are hingedly connected to outer side wall llaps 23 which are downwardly inclined on their lower edges as at 24 to be parallel with the upper edges 9 of the inner side walls 8` Whenerected.l The outer yside walls flaps are partially severed from the front wall 3 by a seriesof interrupted slits 24 forming a frangible and bendable connection between the front wall and the outer side walls.
The ends of the bottom Wall 2 are provided with an adhesive coating 25 which coacts with and secures the un! f nects the outer side walls to the outsides'of the inner side walls `8 when the box is erected. The blank thus far described can be erected by existing machinery to form an ordinary ve walled box with a swingable box shaped cover. v
-In order to provide the desired ash receptacle in the box Vformed by the foregoing'blank a separate insert blank shown in Fig. 3 is provided.- The insert blank j a V-shaped notch 31 which is disposed in Aupwardly open ing position when the'box is assembled. F[thepside edges of the inner insert wall 27 are foldably connected at 32 to inner side aps 33 and the side edges of the front Virisert wall'28 are connectedby the foldlines 34 witlrthe outer side flaps 35. YIt is pointed out that the inner in-v 'shaped cross section with the notched tongue S and the upper edges of the side aps 35 disposed below the up.- per edges of the inner wall 27 and the side flaps 33. The lower edges of the side flaps 35 are inclined upwardly as at 351 when erected.
The outer wall 2S of the insert blank and its tongue 3i) are longer than the front wall 3 of the box blank, but the walls 3 and 2S are of approximately the same width and the side flaps 23 and 35 ofthe two blanks are of approximately the same width. In assembling the insert blank into the outer box the insert blank is folded into channel shape as described and is placed over the back wall it of the box blank and the inner side walls S of the box blank are folded up into lapped relation over the outer sides of the insert flaps 35. Where the inner side flaps 3 of the box blank extend above the outer flaps 35 and below the inclined edges 351 of the side flaps 35, registering areas 36 and 361 of adhesive are provided on the ends of the box flaps 8 and the inner aps 33 of the insert. These adhesive areas secure the insert blank to the partially erected box while lleaving the front wall 23 and its side flaps 35 of the insert blank free to hinge forwardly of the box. lf desired, the lower cut away 351 and adhesive 361 an be omitted.
After the insert blank is partially assembled into the box blank which operation can be performed over a packet of cigarettes prewrapped in an inner foil wrapper such as is indicated at 37 in Fig. l, the bottom wall 2 and front wall 3 of the box blank are folded successively upwardly to seal the bottom wall 2 and its adhesive coating 25 to the undersides of the tuck aps 21 and to seal the front wall 3 to the outer side of the outer wall 28 of the insert blank. For this purpose the inside of the front wall 3 is provided with an adhesive coating 38. The outer side walls 23 are then folded rearwardly over the inner side walls and secured thereto by the adhesive coating 26. The tongue 30 on the insert blank projects abovev the front wall 3 and is re tained behind the swingable cover 1S* when the cover is closed over the packet 37 in the usual fashion.
In the closed and sealed condition of the box the frangible connection formed by the interrupted slits 241 Y and the overlapped engagement of the cover 19 with the tongue 30 holds the box in securely erected position for shipment and sale of the package. When the purchaser or user opens the cover 19 in the usual manner the tongue 3i? and the upper edge of the front wall `8 Vare exposed so that the front wall can be pulled forwardly breaking the frangible connection between the front wall and the outer side walls as at 39. The outer side flaps 35 of the insert blank slide between the inner side walls 8 of the box and the inner side aps 33 of the insert while the adhesive areas 36 hold the side flaps 33 and the rear wall of the insert blank in assembled relation. A wedge or hopper shaped pocket is thus formed between the front and rear walls of the insert blank which can bev used as an ash tray. The notch 31 forms a convenient support for resting a cigarette on the box. The package can be reclosed by pushing in the front wall 3 and reclosing the cover 19 over the tongue 3ft in which position the box continues to function as a convenient crush proof carton for the remaining cigarettes contained therein. f
Desirably the 'opposed surfaces of the insert lblank walls 27 and 28 and the side aps 35 are rendered lire proof to resist the temperature of hot ashes and cigarette butts. This may be accomplished by applyingl a rnetal foil cover indicated conventionally at 40 to the insert blank or by otherwise treating the blank with a suitable fire proofing material. The ash receptacle formed by` the insert blank will not only function to receive cigarette ashes but can be used to extinguish burning cigarette butts simply by closing the front walls 3 and 23 against the rear wall 27; the burning end of the cigarette butt can be crushed and air excluded therefrom. Ashes and the extinguished butt can, of course, be emptied from the receptacle as convenient to the user.
The modied form of cigarette box or carton shown in Figs. 5 to 7 consists of a single integral blank in which the back wall 41 and bottom wall 42 are connected to the front wall 43 of the box proper as in theV first form of the invention. The upper edge of the blank is provided with the same top wall 44, cover hack wall 453 and cover forming flaps which will not be redescrihed. The sides of the back wall 41 are provided with side wall flaps 46 which in this instance form the outer side walls of the erected box. Tuck flaps 47 on the lower ends of the flaps 16 fold inwardly and are secured to an adhesive coating 4S on the bottom wall 42.
Secured directly to the edge of the front wall 43 along the fold line 49 which forms the upper front edge of the box is an outer receptacle wall 50 with side recep tacle flaps 51 on its edges. The upper edges of the flaps 51 are inclined downwardly and rearwardly as at 52 when the carton is erected. The bottom edges of the ilaps are inclined upwardly as at 521. Secured to the opposite edge of the front receptacle wall 50 along the fold line '53 is an inner receptacle wall 54 having a notched or recessed edge 55 disposed along the upper edge of the front wall when the box is erected. Side flaps 56 on the sides of the receptacle wall 54 fold in.- side of the outer side wall ilaps 46 on the back wall 41 of the box and are secured thereto by the coacting adhesive areas 57 and 571 when the box is erected.
In erecting the box from the blank shown in Fig. 5 the panel Sti is folded over into lapped relation with the panel 43 and secured thereto by the lines of adhesive 58. rlhe panel 54 which Vforms the inner receptacle wall is folded oppositely onto the back of the panel 50 and the si-de flaps 51 and 56 :are folded rearwardly in lapped relation along the sides `of the package after which the outer side wallilaps 46 are folded upwardly and secured by the adhesive areas 57 and 571 which a-re located at the upper and lower edges of the flaps 46. Thus in the erected position of the -box shown in Fig. 6 the front receptacle forming panel 50 secured to the outer panel 43 of the box is tiltable about the forward edge of the bottom wall 42 with the side receptacle forming flaps 51 sliding -between :the flaps 56 and 46. The end panel 54 and its side flanges 56 which fold into the box rto form the forward cigarette retaining wall are longer than the receptacle forming walls 43 'and 50 to project upwardly into the swinging cover when the box is erected. The upper edges of Ithe panels 43 and 50 project upwardly above the lower edge of the cover when the box is closed and hold the ash receptacle panels in closed position. Desirably the opposed faces of the ash receptacle panels are provided with a ire proof coating or surface 59 which is applied to the reverse side of the panels 50 and S4 as Vandl 3 can =be assembled in a different manner to achieve the same functional properties of the erected box. As shown in Figs. 8 and 9, the front wall 3 and its side flaps 2.3 can be laid flat and the front insert panel 28 can be secured to the. adhesivelayers 38. The inner insert panel 27 is then folded back on the panel 28 and the side flaps 33 and 35 folded up. The side walls 8 of the back wall 1 are folded up and the front wall 3 with the opstanding insert side flaps 33 and 35 is folded back over'the upstanding side walls 8. Strips of adhesive 60 on the reverse sides of the side walls 8 or the reverse sides Yof the insert side aps 33, or both, fasten the inner panels 27` ofthe insert to theside walls 8. The outer side wall flaps 23 can be folded up against the outer sides of the side flaps 35 before or after the front Wall 3v and the insert panels 'are folded back on the back and side Walls. Areas of adhesive 61 and 62 at the top and bottom of t the inner side wall flaps or the tops and bottomsY of the 'outer side wall flaps 23, or both, coact to hold the front l Wall 3 and outer receptacle panel closed till the frangible connection along .the yfold 4lines 241 is broken.
