HORSE-CHECKER.

Beit known that I, DANIEL O. COX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mannsville, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented-certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Checkers, of which This invention relates to a device to be attached to a harnesses a permanent fixture thereof, for the purpose of checking and un- It relates more particularly to an improvement in the invention for which I filed an application for a patent July 23, 1883, which application was allowed October 2, 1883, and it is intended to coact therewith.

The obj ect of the invention is to provide means whereby the check-rein of a horses harness may be either hitched to or unhitched from the harness-saddle by the .driver while seated in the carriage.

A represents the saddle-tree of the harness, to which the rein-rings Bare attached. I make these ringsvertically elongatedorloop-shaped, to permit more vertical play to the reins than usual.

C represents the horse-checkei` which is the subject of the former application, hereinbefore referred to, of which a brief description will be here given for the purposes of this specification.

D represents a longitudinally apertured body, into the forward end of which a clip, E, enters. To one end of this clip the check-rein a is attached, and to the other end a line, b, is attached. Line b is bifurcated at its rear end, to attach to both of the reins F.

c is a spring-puppet or stop-pin to engage a hole in clip E, to hold the horse checked.

d is a lever pivoted at one end to said pin, and pivoted midway to thebody D. The upper rear end of the clip E and theforward side of the lower end of pin c are beveled or wedgecillate vertically by the action of the reinF, on 'i which said lever rests. The other end of each lever G is bent to the rear, as shown at g in the plan view, to restv upon the rear end of lever d.

f is a spring acting to drive the clip E forward to carry its hole from under pin c.

The operation is as follows: By giving a sudden jerk on the reins strained upward levers G will actuatelever d to withdraw pin c, thus freeing the clip E to be pulled forward by the check-line a; but as the horse is at this instant suddenly restrained by the jerk ofthe lines the check-clip is provided with a spring, f, to push it forward enough to keep pin c from falling into its hole. rIhe object ofthus loosening the check-rein is to allow the horse to drink at a trough or brook without getting out to unhitch the check-line. By giving a long steady pull upon'the reins somewhat farther back than is usual in driving the strap b will be tightened and will draw the checkclip into place.

What I claim as my invention, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination, with the checkrein holding device C, of the levers G, as shown and described.

2. The combination, with the check-rein- Vholding device C, having the clip E and spring DANIEL O. oOX.
