PILLOW OR CUSHION Filed Feb. 7, 1957 va lll 2,944,266 PILLOW R CUSHION s KurtWertheimer, 1268 S. Highland Ave., 1 Los Angeles 19, Calif.
Filed Feb. 7, 1957, Ser. No. 638,773 1 Claim. (Cl. 5'341) My invention relates to pillows or cushions.
An important object of the invention is to provide a pillow or cushion having opposed sections of different degrees of compressibility, so that the section of the desired degree of compressibility may be arranged next to the face of the user.v
A further object of the invention is to provide a pillow or cushion having one section filled with sponge or foam rubber while the other section is filled with down or the like.
A further object `of the invention is to provide a pillow or cushion of the above mentioned character having its compartments separated by an air-proof sheet, formed of plastics material, rendering the rubber lilled sideY of the pillow allergy-proof with respect to down or feathers.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pil-` low or cushion of the above mentioned character which is of simpliiied construction and which may be manufac-V tured cheaply. n n Y Other objects and advantages of my invention will be 'apparent during the course ofthe following description. In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application andk in which like numerals are employedto designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pillow or Ycushion embodying. my invention,
Figure 2 Yis Va longitudinal section takenvon line 2--2 of Figure 1, i
Figure 3 is a transverse section taken on line 3-3 of.
Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of 'the sponge rubber filling, as viewed from the line 4--4 of Figure 2,
Figure' 5 is a fragmentary bottom plan view, similar to Figure 4, viewed from line 5.--5 Yof Figure 6, and,
Figure 6 is a vertical section taken on line 6-6 of Figure 5.
My improved pillow or cushion comprises a casing 10 formed of down-proof ticking. The casing is formed in opposed sections 11, lformingcompartments-i12 and 13. These compartments are separatedfby an air-proof sheet orpartition 14 formed of plastics material, which is fairproof and flexible. The marginal edges of the sections 11 and sheet K14 are suitably assembled and Secured together by a line or lines of stitching 15. A suitable opening is left atthe connected marginal edges, so that the lilling may be introduced into the compartments 12 andv 13, after which the opening is closed by continuing the line of stitching.
The compartment 12 receives a resilient iilling 16 formed of sponge or foam rubber, including an outer generally spherically curved layer 17 having spaced transverse ribs l18 formed integral therewith. These ribs provide spaces or cells 19. The inner ends of the ribs 18 bear against the air-proof plastics sheet 14. The com- 2,944,266 Patented July 12, 1960 ICE partment 13 is filled with softer material, such as down or feathers 20. i
In view of the foregoing description, it willv be seen that the vsponge or -foam rubber lled section of the pillow may be arranged next to the face of lthe user, or the Y pillow may be inverted and the down lilled section arranged next to the face of the user. This provides the pillow with opposed sections having different degrees of compressibility.
Instead of providing the sponge or foam rubber filling 16 with the spaced ribs 18, I form this filling solid and provide the same with openings or recesses 21. The closed ends of these recesses are disposed next to the layer 21', arrangedat the upper ticking section 11, Figure 2, while the open ends of the recesses 21 are next to the sheet 14. The `openings or recesses 21 are arranged in longitudinal and transverse rows forming webs between the openings in such rows.
It is to be understood that the forms of my invention herewith shown and described, are to be taken as preferred examples of the same and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing om the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined Claim.
Having thus described my invention, I'claim:
A pillow or cushion comprising, a casing including generally spherically curved casing sections which are arranged in opposed relation, an air-proof substantially at sheet arranged between the casing sections. and having its marginal edge Yarranged between -the marginal edges of the casing sections, means securing all of the marginal edges together, the sheet forming with the casing sections separate compartments, a compressible unitary iilling element formed entirely of foam rubber arranged one compartment only, said element including a spherically curvedY back element and a plurality of spaced parallel ribs which are integral with the back element, said ribs being straight throughout their vertical and horizontal lengths and arranged at a right angle to said sheet, Y
said ribs being separated from and contacting with said sheet, said ribs being arranged in a group extending longitudinally of the compartment within which the ribs are mounted, said ribs decreasing in vertical dimensions toward the ends of the group and said compartment, each rib tapering longitudinally .toward its opposite ends, each rib having an upper spherically curved edge each rib extending transversely of its compartment and having its 'reduced ends arranged near the transverse sides of said References Cited in the le of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS 774,996 Starkwather Nov. 15, 1904 2,193,410 Schubert Mar. 12, 1940 2,617,751 Bickett Nov. 11,r 1952 FOREIGN PATENTS v 22,383 Australia May 29, 1936 23,075 Australia June 17, 1936 v1,103,928 France June 1, 1955. 741,048 Great Britain Nov. 23, 1955
