The bobbin carrying spindle 3 is provided with a coller 4 and a drive pulley 5 at its lower end. The bobbin carrying spindle 3 is rotatably mounted in the spindle carrier 6 of which the oil dash-pot 7 forms a part. The spindle carrier 6 is mounted on the top flange 8 of the channel frame 1 and is secured thereto by means of the clamp nut 9. The flange 4 of the spindle 3 is pro-' vided with a pair of upwardly projecting and oppositely disposed pins -10 for engaging with the winding bobbin 11 when it rests on the top of the flange 4. p Interposed between the spindle carrier 6 and the hollow drive pulley 5 is a sleeve 12 whose bottom flange 13 faces'the bottom flange 14 of the pulley 5.
The bobbin 11 may be of any suitable shape to take the yarn and is here shown as having a parallel sidedbody portion 15 and a flared top portion 16. A wide flange 17 provides the bottom support for wound-on yarn and is only slightly smaller in diameter than the ring 18 mounted on the ring rail 2. The edge 19 of the flange 17 is slightly rounded to provide a smooth surface for the yarn as it is fed from above the flange to below the flange and from the rounded edge the under surface of the flange is tapered inwardly at approximately 45 at 20 and is then tapered inwardly sharply at 21 to meet the undercut tail receiving ring 22. The tail receiving ring 22 is undercut at approximately 30 from the vertical and its under surface'23 forms a bearing flange to rest on the top sur- I round to the yarn, the yarn will fall into the notch 40 and thence be pulled around one side of the ring 22, the button 30.and back on to the ring 22 to form a looped transfer tail 31. The looping of the yarn will be continued until the ring rail 2 starts its upward travel and the bobbin is lowered. As the top edge of the ring 18 comes above the top surface of the flange 17, the yarn Y will ride into the V 41 and be carried from there over the top surface of the flange 17 back onto the body 15 of the bobbin 11. A blind hole 38 is drilled on the underside of the flange and is centered on the line of yarn as it passes from the notch 40 onto the transfer tail forming ring 22. This blind hole 38 facilitates the cutting of the yarn at this point when the transfer tail is to be tied to the yarn of another bobbin.
While the bobbin 11 is at rest with no yarn being wound onto it, the continuously running yarn Y coming off the drying rolls 43 is, in a standard machine, fed through the ring 18 and through a slot 44 in the edge of the bobbin flange 17 and thence into the air ejector 45 and through the pipe 46 leading to the waste yarn collector box. The air ejector being fed air through the pipe 47 from the main header 48 and controlled by the valve 53.

Under normal operation of winding the yarn on th bobbin 11, when the rail 2 is at the bottom of its stroke,
. the top edge of the ring 18 is level with the top surface ofthe flange 17. 'In order that a transfer tail of yarn may be formed on the ring 22, the bobbin 11 is lifted up for a short distance. This is accomplished by means of the mannually operated rod 25 which passes through apertures in the top and ' bottom flanges 8 and 26 of the channel frame 1. The top end of the rod 25 contacts the underside ofthe flange 13 of the sleeve 12 while the bottom end of the rod 25 rests on the edge of the cam 27. The cam 27 is mounted on the shaft 28 which is supported on the bracket 29 mounted on the underside of the flange 26. A handle 28a fixed to the shaft 28 is manipulated to effect rotation of the cam and lifting of the rod 25 and with it the sleeve 12 and spindle 3. As the spindle 3 is lifted, the flange 17 is carried above the top edge of the ring 18 to bring the yarn tail receiving ring 22 into line with the ring 18. v
Set in the underside of the flange 17 is the transfer tail carrying button 30 which together with 'the ring 22 carries the transfer tail 31 in the form of a loop wound about the'ring 22 and the button 30 as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The button 30 is held by its flange 32 in the sleeve 33 which is pressed into and bonded in the recess 34 of the flange 17 The button 30 is shouldered at 35 to form a reduced head 36 and is hollow formed to receive the spring 37. The spring 37 holds the large diameter button 30 in line with the recessed portion of the ring 22 and as the transfer tail is being formed it automatically winds on both the ring 22 and button 30 under tension. 7 7 r In order to transfer the yarn Y from the ring 18 onto the ring 22 and button 30 the edge of the flange 17 is notched. The notching of the flange is in the form of a double V as seen in Figs. 3, 4 and 5 of the drawings. Theangled surface 42 provides the lead in for the yarn into the notch 40 for the transfer tail forming, while the other V notch 41 is the lead outfrom the transfer tail forming. Should a portion of the yarn first be wound in the bobbin 11 abovetheflange and the bobbin be moved up as the ring rail'2 is approaching the bottom of its downward stroke, the yarn Y will be draped on the edge 19 of the flange 17. As the notches 40 and 41 come This is standard procedure and is shown in semi-diagrammatic form in Fig. 8 ofthe drawings. As soon as the spindle brake, not shown, is released and the bobbin starts to rotate, the slot 44 carries with it the yarn Y thereby exerting a side pressure of the yarn Y against the knife blade which is assembled as part of the air ejector unit 45 thereby cutting the yarn and allowing it to be wrapped on the rotating bobbin. There is a certain amount of difliculty in transferring the yarn from the upper air ejector unit 49, to the ,air ejector unit 45 as it is apt to be cut against either the upper edge of the bobbin on the bobbin flange and thereby fouling up around the bobbin and the traversing ringrail 2. In order toavoid this difliculty, the yarn Y is taken from the upper air ejector 49 and transferred directly to an air ejector pipe 50 which is a permanent fixture axially set in the bobbin spindle 3 as shown in Fig. 9 of the drawings. This air ejector pipe 50 passes down throughthe oil dash-pot 7 and into the air ejector unit 51 and thence to the waste yarn collector box. The pipe 50 is permanently sealed by welding or other suitable means at the lower end of the oil dash-pot 7 in order to prevent leakage of the oil. At the start the yarn Y from the dryer drum 43 is being fed to the upper air ejector 49. It is taken from this air ejector and transferred down one side of the bar 54 which straddles the top of bobbin 11 directly to an air ejector pipe 50 in the bobbin spindle 3. This is shown in Figure 9. The yarn passes to that side of the bar which contains the slot 52. While continuing to be fed into pipe 50 the yarn is pushed sideways by the operator into the slot 52 and thence sideways and downwards over the top edge of the bobbin to engage the traveller on the traversing ring rail 18. The path of the yarn Y is now from the dryer drum 43 to the ring rail 18 over the upper edge of the bobbin 11, through the slot 52 to the pipe 50. The spindle brake is released so that the bobbin starts to rotate. The yarn Y begins to be wound on to the bobbin and at the same time the side pressure exerted causes it to be cut on the top edge of pipe 50. The fact that the yarn is kept entirely above the bobbin flange during the starting operation ensures that any pile up of yarn, caused by failure to properly thread the yarn in the ring 18, can be cleared away promptly without fouling up the drive mechanism below, and the yarn can be promptly transferred from the top of the pipe 50 to the upper air ejector unit 49 while restarting of the winding operation is carried out. I
' From the above described method and apparatus for winding yarn on bobbins on a twisting and winding machine, it will be noted that a considerable amount of mechanism, particularly mechanism which has to be driven in synchronized adjustment with the main drive of the v a 5 machine, has been eliminated. In particular all the mechanism which, in the past, had had to be. incorporated in some form or another with the reciprocating drive of the ring rail 2, to give the desired extra travel of the ring rail, has been eliminated. In a yarn twisting and winding machine having one or more bobbin spindles and in which the ring rail including the .yarntraveller is restricted to a normal vertical reciprocating yarn winding travel, a bobbin on each of said spindles, means to direct the yarn axially downwards through said bobbin, means .to hold said yarn to the top of the bobbin and to cut said yarn when the bobbin is rotated, said bobbin having a yarn supporting flange, a double V notch on the edge of said flange, a transfer tail ring located immediately below said flange, a springloaded button projecting downwardly from the underside of said flange, said button being disposed at a radius from the axis of the bobbin and having a large diameter sec- .tion about which, in conjunction with the transfer tail ring, a transfer tail loop is formed, and a smaller diameter section onto which the transfer tail loop is transferred when the spring-loaded button is depressed, a spindle and bobbin raising means including a rod, a cam under the lower end of said rod, and means to rotate said camand raise said rod and'with it said spindle and bobbin to bring 'said transfer tail ring and the large diameter section of said button-into linewith the ring rail, one of the V notches of the flange catching and guiding the yarn from the yarn traveller on the ring rail onto the transfer tail ring, and about said button to form a transfer tail loop, the other of said V notches catching and guiding the yarn from the transfer tail loop to above said flange when thering rail moves upwards beyond said flange.

In a yarn twisting and winding machine having one or more bobbin spindles and in which the ring rail including the yarn traveller is restricted to a normal vertical reciprocatingyarn winding travel, an air. ejection passage through said spindles, a bobbin on each of said spindles, a yarn engaging slot in the top of said bobbins adapted to hold and cut the yarn passing from the yarn traveller through saidfair ejection passage when the bobbin is first rotated, said bobbin having a yarn supporting flange, a double V notch on the edge of said flange, a transfer'tail ring located immediately below said flange, a spring loaded button projecting downwardly from the underside of said flange, said button being-disposed at a radius from the axis of the bobbin and having a large diameter section about which, in conjunction with the transfer tail ring, a transfer tail loop is formed, and a smaller diameter section onto which thetransfer tail lop is transferred when'thespring loaded button is depressed, a spindle and bobbin raising means'including a rod, a cam under the lower end of said rod', and means to rotate said'carn and raise said rod and with it said spindle and bobbin to bring said transfer tail ringjandthe-large diameter section of said buttoninto line with the ring rail and yarn traveller, one of the V notches of the flange catching and guiding the yarn from the yarn traveller on the ring rail on to the transfer tail ring and about said button to form a transfer tail loop, the other of said V notches catching and guiding the yarn from the transfer tail loop to above said flange for normal Winding when the ring rail moves upwards beyond said flange.
15. In a yarn twisting and winding machine in which the yarn is taken from drying rolls and wound onto a rotating bobbin and is guided thereon by a yarn traveller on a vertically reciprocating ring rail, a bobbin carrying spindle, a bobbin mounted on said spindle, an air ejection system axially mounted in said spindle and having its yarn receiving opening located near the top level of said bobbin, yarn engaging means on the top of said bobbin adapted to hold and cut the yarn at themouth of the air ejection system when the bobbin is rotated, means to raise said bobbing a short distances and means on said bobbin adapted to engage the yarn between the top of said bobbin and the yarn traveller to form a separate yarn transfer tail on the lower end of said bobbin when the bobbin has been raised as the ring rail approaches the lower end of its travel.

A bobbin for use on a yarn twisting and winding machine, comprising a hollow body portion, a flange projecting from said body portion in a plane at right angles to the axis of the bobbin and located near the lower end of said body portion, yarn transfer tail loop receiving members on the underside of said flange comprising an axially disposed recessed ring portion and a spring loaded button disposed at a radius from the axis of the bobbin and substantially in the same plane as the recessed ring portion, said spring loaded button being depressable into the said flange in an axis parallel with the axis of the bobbin, a V notch on the edge of said flange adapted to guide the yarn onto said transfer tail forming members to form aloop thereabout, and a second V notch on the edge of said flange adapted to guide the yarn away from said loop receiving members. 7 1

A bobbin for use on a yarn twisting and winding machine comprising a hollow body portion, a flange projecting from said body portion in a plane at right angles to the axis of the bobbin and located near the lower end of said body portion, yarn transfer tail loop receiving members on the under side of said flange comprising an axially disposed recessed ring portion and a spring loaded button disposed at a radius from the axis of the bobbin and substantially in the same plane as the recessed ring portion, said spring loaded button having a large diameter body section and a smaller diameter body section and being depressable into the said flange in an axis parallel with the axis of the bobbin, a V notch on the edge of said flange adapted to guide the yarn onto the recessed ring portion and the large diameter body section of the spring loaded button, and a second V notch on the edge of said flange adapted to guide the yarn away from said loop receiving members. a
18. A bobbin for use on a yarn twisting and winding machine comprising a hollow body portion, a flange projecting from said body portion in a plane at right angles to the axis of the bobbin and located near the lower endof said body portion, said flange having its edge angled inwardly on its underside to provide a smooth yarn guiding surface, yarn transfer tail loop receiving members on the underside of said flange comprising an axially disposed recessed ring portion and a spring loaded button disposed at a radius from the axis of the bobbin and substantially in the same plane as the recessed ring portion, said spring loaded button having a large diame'ter body section and a smaller diameter body section and being depressable into said flange in an axis parallel with the axis of the bobbin, a V notch on the edge of said flange'and extending down and inwardly to the depth of the angled surface of the flange edge, said notch adapted to guide the yarn onto the recessed ring portion and the large diameter body section of the spring loaded button, and a second V notch on the edge of said flange, said second notch having a relatively long peripheral side and extending slightly beyond the inner lower edge of the angled surface of the flangeedge, and adapted to guide the yarn away from said loop receiving members.
19. A bobbin for use on a yarn twisting and winding machine comprising a hollow body portion, a flange projecting from said body portion in a plane at right angles to the axis of the bobbin and located near the lower end of said body portion, said flange having its edge angled inwardly on its underside to provide a smooth yarn guiding surface, yarn transfer tail loop receiving members on the underside of said flange comprising an axially disposed recessed ring portion and a spring loaded button disposed at a radius from the axis of the bobbin and substantially in the same plane as the recessed ring portion, said spring loaded button having a large diameter body section and a smaller diameter body section and being depressable into said flange in an axis parallel with the axis of the bobbin, an air ejection system axially mounted on the spindle and having its yarn receiving opening located near the top level of the bobbin, a bar straddling the top end of said hollow body portion, a yarn end holding slot in said bar, a V notch on the edge of said flange and extending down and inwardly to the depth of the angled surface of the flange edge, said notch adapted to guide the yarn onto the recessed ring portion and the large diameter body section of the spring loaded button, and a second V notch on the edge of said flange, said second notch having a relatively long peripheral side and extending slightly beyond theinner lower edge of '10 the angled surface of the flange edge and adapted to guide the yarn away from said loop receiving members.
20. A bobbin for use on a yarn twisting and winding machine as set forth in claim 18, in which the relatively long peripheral edge of the second V notch extends inwardly to the depth of the first mentioned V notch on the top surface of the flange.
21. A bobbin for use on a yarn twisting and winding machine as set forth in claim -19 in which the relatively long peripheral edge of the second V notch extends inwardly to the depth of the first mentioned V notch on the top surface of the flange. I

A bobbin for use on a yarn twisting and winding machine comprising a hollow body portion having its upper portion flared outwardly, a bar straddling the top end of said flared portion of the body, a yarn end holding slot in said bar, a flange projecting from the lower end of said body portion, yarn transfer tail loop receiving members on the underside of said flange said transfer tail loop receiving members comprising an axially disposed recessed ring and a spring loaded button disposed at a. radius from the axis of the bobbin, and a pair of V notches on the edge of said flange adapted to guide the yarn in loop form onto and away from said recessed ring and spring loaded button.
