BACK-BAND HooK.

SECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 294,229, dated February 26, 1884:.

Application ilcd December 15, 1883.

To all whom t may concern.-

Be it known that I, FRANK HAYNEs, a citizen-of the United States, residing at Monticello, in the county of Drew and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Back-Band Hooks; and

I do declare-the following to be a full, clear,

a central longitudinal sectional view of the same.

This invention has relation to means for preventing the traces from `rubbing against the sides of the horse; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the tiansversely-slotted guard-plate and central vertical stay, the pivot-bearing connecting the plate and stay, and the vibratory trace-hook pivoted on this bearing.'

The invention also consists in providing the upper portion of the stay with a ring or loop for the passage of a plow-line, when required, all as hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the side guardplate,which is made with two horizontal slots, b b, in its upper portion, and two horizontal slots, c c, near its lower end, through which the back band passes.

D is the outer stay, the ends of which are firmly secured to the upper and lower portions of the plate. This stay extends centrally and vertically parallel to the plate, and between the stay and plate is the opening E, through which the trace or tug passes.

F indicates a pivot bearing orbar, which connects the plate and stay at the upper part (No model.)

of the middle portion of the plate, andon this bearing is pivoted the pendent swinging hook or carrier G, the lower end of which is provided with an outwardly-turned -i-hook, H, adapted to engage a link of a trace-chain ora ring attached to a leather trace. The trace or tug being supported by the hook, causes the latter` to vibrate to and fro, in accordance lwith the movements of the animal, while the plate remains steady in its position against the side of the animal, being held by the backl band.

l In order to provide against the slipping of the plate upward or downward, the lower slot through which the back-band passes is provided with teeth K to engage the band.

L represents a ring or loop formed at the upper portion of the stay, andadapted for the passage of a plow-line.

Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent,

l. rlhe horizontallyslotted back-band plate,

having avertieal central stay connected thereto, the pivot-bearing connecting the plate and stay, and the pendent vibratory trace -hook pivoted on said bearing, substantially as specified.

' 2. The back-band plate having an outer sta)r and a pendent pivotal trace-carrier having its lower end turned outward in -i-form, substantially as specified.

3. `The back-band plate having a pendent vibratory trace-hook between said plate and a stay, and at the upper end of the'latter a ring or loop for thepassage of a plow-line,sub stantially as specified.
