BREECHING ATTACHMENT FOR CARRlAGE-SHAFTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 294,189, dated February 26, 1884,
4 Application filed October 27,1853. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL WVALKER BooKsH, of Baton Rouge, in the parish of East Baton Rouge and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Breeohing Attachment to Carriage-Shafts, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to improve breeching-bar attachments for carriage-shafts, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan View of a pair of buggyshafts with my improved breeching attach ment applied thereto; and Fig. 2 is a section of the same on the line x m, Fig. 1.
I make a strong bow, a, of metal, or it may be of wood, if desired, of suitable dimensions, to connect with the shafts b at the ends, and be secured at the middle to the cross-bar c by a rod, d, to be supported in suitable proximity to the buttocks of the horse, to serve the purpose of the breeching of the harness, and also to strengthen the shafts and to prevent the horse from kicking high enough to do any damage to the vehicle or to the riders. I make the inside of the bow at in oval form, to be easy to the horse when brought into contact with it, and connect the bow to the shafts by clips 6, of any approved kind. To the cross-bar c I connect said bow at, with a rod bolted to it and to the cross-bar, said rod being bent suitably to raise the bow as high as may be desired above the shafts.
The clips 6 may be formed" on the ends of the bow a, to fit under and around the shafts, as here shown, or in anyimproved way; or they may be made separately from the ends of the bow, which may be bolted to them.
With this improved breeching attachment the harness-breeching maybe dispensed with, thus simplifying the harness and lessening the labor of harnessing and unharnessing the horse.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to use a bow breechingbar on or under shafts as a holdback; but
What I do claim as new and of my invention is In a breeching attachment for carriageshafts, the combination, with the shafts or thills of a vehicle, of the bow at, with its ends clipped to the thills, and its curved rear portion somewhat elevated above a horizontal plane touching the upper surfaces of the shafts, said curved rear portion being connected to the cross-bar of the thills or shafts by an upwardly and downwardly bent or curved rod bolted to said curved rear portion of breeching-bar and thill cross-bar, essentially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
