3 Claims. (Cl. 36-36) The present invention generally relates to shoe construction and more particularly to a mans shoe provided with a detachable top lift which is easily replaceable.
It is well known in this field of endeavor that the top lift of a mans heel will become worn especially at the rear edge thereof rather quickly and will require replacement which involves the removal of the existing top lift along with the removal of the fasteners such as nails which normally hold the top lift in position and then placing another top lift in position and nailing the same to theheel and 'then' refinishing the heel in the desired manner. Therefore, it is the primary object of the present invention to provide a top lift which is removably connected to the heel and which has several independent lock members connected with anchors on the heel for retaining the lift in position but permitting easy removal thereof for replacement.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a mans heel construction on shoes in which the heel is provided with depending studs receivable in socket members carried by the heel lift together with screw threaded lock members extending horizontally in the lift and engageable with the studs for locking the heel lift rigidly in position on the heel whereby the comfort of the per-' son wearing the shoes will not be affected and there will be no loose feeling conveyed to the wearer inasmuch as the top lifts are rigidly afiixed to the heel but yet readily detached therefrom for replacement when desired.
Yet another feature of the present invention is to provide a detachable heel lift for a mans heel which is simple in construction, easy to use, effective in operation and relatively inexpensive to manufacture.
'Ihcse together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully. hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a partial perspective view of a shoe illustrating the heel and heel lift of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal, vertical sectional view taken substantially upon a plane passing along section line 2-2 of Figure 1 illustrating the details of construction of the heel and top lift and the associated mechanism for locking the top lift to the heel;
Figure 3 is a transverse, sectional View taken substantially upon a plane passing along section line 3-3 of Figure 2 illustrating further structural details of the locking mechanism; and
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the locking plate with the stud or anchor receiving sockets therein together with the association of the locking screws to the sockets being shown.
Referring now specifically to the drawings, the numera1 generally designates the detachable top lift of the present invention which is connected to the main body of the heel designated by the numeral 12 which in turn is connected to the sole 14 of a shoe 16. The shoe 16 including the sole 14 and the manner of attaching the heel 12 thereto, is of conventional construction and forms no part of the present invention.
Extending upwardly into the heel 12 is a plurality of driven fasteners which are designated by the numeral 18 and which are pointed for driving in the manner of a nail. Each of the driven fasteners 18 is provided with an. enlarged head 20 depending from the lower surface of the heel 12 with the head 20 having a peripheral cutout or groove 22 therein with the groove 22 extending substantially throughout the length of the enlarged head 20 with the side walls of the groove 22 being tapered or rounded slightly.
The detachable top lift is designated by the numeral 24 and is constructed of rubber or similar material from which top lifts are usually constructed. The top lift 24 is coextensive with the heel 12 and usually has less thickness or vertical height than the heel 12.
Embedded in or molded in the top lift 24 is a plate 26 of rigid constructionand which may be constructed ofmetal, plastic, or. any'other rigid material with the platef26 having' a plurality ofannular or ring-like upstanding sleeves or projections 28 which define a plurality of sockets 30 for receiving the headed ends 20 of the fasteners 18. The sockets 30 are of such a diameter that they closely receive the enlarged heads 20 on the fasteners 18. As seen in Figure 2, the collar 28 extends substantially to the top edge of the top lift 24 and will engage the complete length of the enlarged head 20 on the fasteners 18. The projections 28 may be secured to the plate 26 as by welding or formed unitarily therewith and may also be constructed of metal, plastic or the like.
The orientation of the projections 28 is shown in Figure 4 and each of the annular projections 28 is provided with an inwardly extending threaded aperture 32 for receiving the threaded portion 34 of an elongated lock screw 36 provided with a polygonal free end 38. The inner end of the lock screw 36 is tapered as indicated by the numeral 40 for engagement with the annular groove 22 in the enlarged head 20. Thus, as the lock screw 36 1s rotated to move inwardly, the tapered end 40 will lockmgly engage the groove 22 when the head 20 has been inserted into the socket 30 thus rigidly and positrvely securing the top lift 24 in position on the heel 18. The polygonal end 38 of the screw 36 may be rotated by a suitable key designated in dotted line by the numeral 42 and all of the screws 36 terminate at the forward edge of the heel lift 24 and are recessed and are received within sockets 44 wherein the key 42 may be brought into operation for rotating the screw fasteners 36 but with the socket 44 normally concealing the polygonal end 38. In fact, the sockets 44 may be substantially closed at the outer edge thereof which would conceal the polygonal ends 38 and also prevent dirt from coming into contact with the polygonal ends 38 but permitting the key 42 to be used by insertion through an entrance slit for the socket.
With the present invention, it is only necessary to loosen all of the lock screws 36, remove the lift 24, obtain a new lift 24, loosen all of the lock screws 36 and place back on the heel 12 by positioning the collars 28 over the heads 20 and screwing all of the lock screws 36 in tight.
The lock screws 36 are received in passageways 46 in the top lift 24 and may be constructed of metal or similar material that is resistant to corrosion.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications are changes skilled in the art, it is not desired to'limitthe-invention to the exact construction and operation shown and deascribed, and accordingly 3'11 suitable modifications and ofthe invention as claimed. v g p "What is claimed as new is as follows:
