HENNING SNDQUIST, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
LOCKING-LATCH.
SPECIEICATIN forming part of Letters Patent No.-293,987, dated February 19, 1884.
Application tiled March 5, 1883. (Model.)
To LZZ whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, HENNING SUNDQUIsT, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locking-Latches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to locking-latches; and it consists in providing the lock with a lever one end of which is adapted to be thrown behind a projection on the latch as the other end is thrownv out of a transverse slot in the hollow lockfspindle by means of a shaft located within the spindle and turned by a key, substantially as hereinafter more fully described.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a face view of my lock with the side plate removed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line xx, Fig. 1. Figf3 is a view of the latchbperating arm; Fig. 4, a view of the locking-spindle; and Fig. 5 represents the key.
A represents the lock-case, which is provided with the latch B, formed with two arms orproj ections, b b', against the former of which bears the operatingspring B, as shownl by Fig. l. The rear end of the latch B is slotted, as represented by. dotted lines, for the reception of the operating-arm c upon the sleeve C, secured to the knob-spindle D, and by which the latch is withdrawn when desired. The spindle or shaft D is hollow, and carries upon each end the knobs D D', formed with an opening, d, for the insertion of the key into the spindle.
Within the case A is pivoteda lever, E, one arm of which extends forward and is adapted to be thrown behind the arm b of the latch, to prevent its withdrawal, and the other arm Athe shaft G in place.
verse slot, g, corresponding to the slot ein the spindle, and upon each side of this slot with a circumferential groove, g', for the reception `of the ends of small screws g2, extending through the spindle D, and serving to retain Each end of the lockingshaft G is formed with notches or other con! figuration for engagement with a key, N, which may be inserted through either of the knobs D D. Normally, the inner arm of the lever E lies in the slots e g of the spindle and its sleeve, and the latch is free to operate as the knob is turned; but when'the key is inserted and the shaft G is turned half-way round, the inner arm of the lever E is thrown out, thereby throwing the other end behind the projection b of the latch B, and effectually preventing its being withdrawn.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new., and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a locking-latch, the combination, with a latch formed with a lug upon one side and a hollow spindle or knob shank having atransverse slot formed in it, of a revolving slotted shaft within the hollow spindle, and a lever adapted to lock the latch by the turning of said shaft, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENN ING SUNDQUIST.
