2' Claims. (Cl. 140 -123) proved guy wire bending tool which is so constructed whereby it may be readily mounted upon a pole utilizing existing guy wire fittings for support in order that the guy wire bending tool may be conveniently supported and manipulated by one person.
Another object of this invention is to provide an inn proved g'uy' Wire bending tool which is so constructed whereby it will not only permit the ease of bending of a guy wire, but also retain such guy wire in' a bent state during the clamping or portions thereof.
r A further object of this invention is" to" provide an proved guy wire bending" tool which is so constructed whereby it not only facilitates the bending of the "guy wire, but also supports the thimble or stay insulator about which the guy wire is being bent during the bending operation.
These together with other objects and advantages which wiii become subsequently apparent reside the details (if construetion and operation as more fillly hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a horizontal sectional view taken through a pole and shows mounted thereon theguy wire bending tool which is the subject of this invention, the guy wire bending tool being illustrated in a partially released position" immediately after the forming of a guy wire end;-
Figure 2 is a fragmentary plan view similar to Figure 1 and. shows the guy wire bending tool in an initial wire bending position;
Figure 3 is an elevational view rotated from the positions of Figures 1 and 2 and shows the guy wire bending tool in the initial position of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view taken substantially upon the plane indicated by the section line 4-4 of Figure 1 and shows the means for clamping together ends of wire bending arms to retain the guy wire in a bent state during the clamping thereof;
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken substantially upon the plane indicated by the section line 5-5 of Figure 1 and shows the specific details of one of the guy wire bending arms including the connection of the clamp element of Figure 4 with respect thereto, the clamp element being shown in a retracted position by dotted lines;

Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that there is illustrated the guy wire bending tool which is the subject of this invention. The guy wire bending tool ltiincludesia' support which is referred to generet by the reference numeral 12.
As is best illustrated in Figure 7, the support 12' includes an elongated sleeve 14 having internal threads 16. Threadedly' engaged in one end of the sleeve 14 is a threaded end 18 of a connecting bolt 20. The bolt 20 includes a second threaded end 22 and a knurled intermediate collar 24 for retaining the bolt 20' against. rotation. I
Threadedly engaged with the threaded end 20 is. a support block 26 which. has a threaded bore 28 in the side thereofreeeiving the threaded portion 22". The'supportblock'26 also includes an upwardly openedthreaded bore 30 in the u per end thereof. Kemovably carried by th threaded bore 30 is a pivot pin 32'. r H The guy wire bending tool 10' also includes a pair of wire bending arms 34 and 36. The wire bending arms 34 and 36 have bifurcated end portions 38 and 40, respec= tively; which are carried by the upper and lower portions of the pivot pin 32, as is best illustrated in Figure 7.
The wire bending arm 34 has acurved wire engaging portion 42 in the vicinity of the bifurcated portion 38.. The wire bending arm 36 has a similar, but differently shaped wire engaging portion 44-. The wire engaging portions 44 may be knurled or otherwise roughened toprevent slippage of'a guy wire withrespect theretoduring a bending operation. The wire bending arms 34 and 36" also include elongated grip portions 46 and 48 which are,
so positioned that they are spaced apartwhen a guy wire isbent into the desired position. 7 I
In order that the wire bending arms 34 and 36 may be retained in a'wire bending position so that the person bending the who ma have his hands free to clamp the wire in its bent state; thereis earriedby the wire bend;
ing arm 34-ae1arnping strap 50: The clamping strap 50'" is pivotally connected by a pivot pin 52 to a retaining fitting 54. The grip portion 46 is tubular, as is best illustrated in Figure 5, and a retaining portion 54 is slidably retained in a free end of the grip portion 46 by means of a pin 56. By pivoting the strap 50 into alignment with the retaining portion 54, the strap 50 may he slid into the grip portion 46, as is illustrated in dotted lines in Figure 5. The extreme end of the grip portion 46 is externally threaded as at 58 and the strap 50 is provided with an internally threaded cap 60 engageable with the threaded portion 58 to retain the strap 50 within the grip portion 46.
The strap 50 is provided with an elongated slot 62 in which there is received a shank portion of a clamping fastener 64. The fastener 64 is removably carried by the free end of the grip portion 48 and serves to clamp the strap 50 in adjusted positions of the wire bending arms 34 and 36.
* i smas es V Referring now to Figures 1 and 6 in particular, it will be seen that the Wire bending tool 10 is supported by a conventional pole band 66 carried by a suitable pole 68. The pole band 66 is of the split collar type and has a pair of spaced fianges'70 through which there extends a bolt 72; Carriedby the bo1t72 are guy wire-connecting straps 74; Extending between the guy wirefconnecting straps 74 remote from the bolt 72 is a bolt 76 for receiving either a thimble or a strain insulaton; The bolt 76 is threadedly engaged into the sleeve 14 remote from the bolt 20 to mount the support 12 on a pole, such as the pole 68.
Once the guy wire bending tool 10 is mounted on the pole 68 in the manner described above, the wire bending arms 34 and 36 are moved to opened positions, such as those illustrated in Figures 2 and 3. A guy wire 78 to be bent is then fed through the bifurcated portions 38 and 40 in the manner illustrated in Figure 2. At this time, it is pointed out that asuitable guy were fitting, such as the fitting 80 is mounted on the pivot pin 32 between the bifurcated portions38 and 40, as is best illustrated in Figure 7. The fitting 80 may be in the form of a conventional type of connector or in the form of a strain insulator. Inasmuch as the connector 80is in itself not a part of this invention, but a stock item in guy wire construction, it will not be described in more detail hereinafter. I
After the guy wire 78 has been positioned in the man ner illustrated in Figure 2, while the wire bending arm 34 isretained stationary, the wire bending arm 36 is swung about the pivot pin 32 until such time-as an end portion 82 of the guy wire 78 is swung around or bent around the fitting 80 to a position such as that illustrated in Figure 1. At this time the grip portions 46'and 48 are clamped together by the strap 50. The operator of the guy wire bending tool 10 may then release the wire bending arms 34 and 36 and apply a suitable clamp 84 to the end portion 82 and the main part of the guy wire 78, as is best illustrated in Figures 1 and 8. A suitable strap 86 may also be placed over the extreme free end of the end portion 82. .The strap.50 may then be released to the position illustrated in Figure 1 and then the 32 removed.
Referring now to Figure 9 in particular, it will be seen that there is illustrated a fragmentary end View of the.
guy wire 78 after having a thimble applied thereto, the thimble being referred to by the reference numeral 88.
Inasmuch as the thimble 88 has a much larger center,
opening than the pivot pin 32, it will be readily apparent thatit will not be properly positioned on the pivot pin 32 for receiving the guy wire 78 as in the case of the fitting 80. Accordingly, there is also provided a former or adapter 90 which will be received within the opening of the thimble 88 in the position best illustrated in Figure 9. The adapter 90 is provided with a bore 92 receiving the pivot pin 32 and facilitating the positioning of the thimble 88. When the thimble 88 is secured in place, clamps such as the clamp 84 may be utilized, or
pivot pin 4 t a clamp 94, as is best illustrated in Figure 9, may be utilized. In certain instances the clamp 94 will be used in conjunction with the clamp 84.
It is to be understood that the wire bending tool 10 may be made in all sizes to accommodate guy wires of different diameters. Further, the length of the bifurcated portions 38 and 40 may vary depending upon the length of the fittings about which the guy wire is to be bent.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to,'falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A guy wire bending tool comprising a support, means on said support for supporting a wire connecting fitting during a wire bending operation, wire bending arms, said means forming a pivot for said wire bending arms, said wire bending arms having free. ends, releasable means extending between said free ends for retaining said wire bending arms in a wire bending position, one of said wire bending arms being tubular, said releasable means being normally stored within said one wire bending am, said one wire bending arm free end portion being threaded, and said releasable means including an end terminating in a cap releasably engaged with said threaded free end portion to retain said releasable means within said one wire bending arm.
- 2. A guy wire bending tool comprising a support, means on said support for mounting a wire connecting fitting during a wire bending operation, wire bending arms, said means forming a pivot for said wire bending arms, means on said support for mounting said support on a guy wire pole fitting, said wire bending arms having wire engagingportions and spaced grip portions whereby clamps may be applied to wires after bending with said wire bending arms, said grip portions having free ends, releasable means extending between said free ends for retaining said wire bending arms in a wire bending position, one of said grip portions being tubular, said releasable means 4 being normally stored within said one grip portion, said one grip portion free end being threaded, and said releasable means including an end portion terminating in a cap releasably engaged with said threaded free end to retain said releasable means within said one grip portion.
