Be it known that I, CrriinLns K. GILns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Il1inois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Linings for atch-Cases, which is fully set forth in the following specification, refer.- ence being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a plan view of a hunting-case watch containing my improvement, with the front plate open. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of the same closed, taken on the liner Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale; Fig. 3, an elevation of the lining detached; Fig. 4:, a vertical section of the bezel detached; Fig. 5, a similar view of the back cap detached.

My invention relates to an improvement in watch-cases of ordinary construction, either the hunting-case or open-faced; and it consists in providing a lining of special construction for such cases, the improvement being inclosed within the lining.

I will proceed to describe in detail the construction of my improved lining and the mode of applying it to the case, and will then point out definitely in the claim the special improve ment which I believe to be new and wish to protect by Letters Patent.

In the drawings I have shown the improvement applied to the hunting-case A, which may be of any ordinary construction, consisting of a center, a, to which is hinged a front plate, a and a back plate, at, in the usual way. A metallic ring or band, B, is made to fit close- 1 y the center of this case and of sufficient depth to accommodate the movement which this band is adapted to receive, being provided near its front edge with an inside seat or rabbet, Z), on which the edge of the front plate of the movement rests when placed within the band. This band is also provided with an exterior screwthread, Z), at its front edge, and a similar thread, Z), at its back edge. The bezel O has a crys tal, D, mounted in the usual way, and is provided with an internal screw-thread, c, as is shown in Fig. i of the drawings, whereby the bezel is adapted to be turned on the front portion of the band. The back cap, E, is also provided with an internal screw-thread, c, where by it is adapted to be turned on the back portion of the band. The bezel is preferably made of the same material as the case, in order to make an appropriate finish for the watch when set up. p

In applying my improvement to the case. the movement is first placed within the band and fastened therein by any suitable device. The bezel is then screwed to the band, and the latter, with the movement, dropped into the center, which it closely fits. The back cap is then screwed onto the band, and thereby the front and back are drawn down tightly upon the center, so as to make perfectly tight joints and hold the parts securely together, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. It the watch is to be stein-winding, the band must of course be perforated to receive the winding-stem, and if key-winding the back cap must be perforated to receive the key. A slight notch may be made in theinside ofthe casing at theproper point along the seat for the movement, into which a pin on the latter drops, thereby keeping the movement from turning in the band, and this is the only fastening device absolutely necessary in the application of my improvement, as above described, to secure all the parts and retain them in their proper position.

It will be seen at once that with this im provement I obtain a completelining for the case, which completely incloses the movement and protects it from injury. The construction provides tight joints in all places, so that the movement is protected from dust in a manner substantially perfect, the linings being made in different parts, all of which are connected together by sore threads. These parts are readily detached whenever occasion requires, and at the same time the fitting of the case is made so close and tight as to hold the lining firmly in place, as above described. I thus am enabled to provide a hunting-case watch in which the case for the movement is dust- I tight and water-tight, and I am not aware that this has ever been successfully accomplished before my invention, although I am aware that it has been frequently attempted.

This improved lining may also be applied to an open-faced watch with the case of ordinary construction. In such application, the crystal may be mounted in the bezel, as de scribed above, in which case the frontplate would be rednced to a simple ring closing down around the bezel; or the crystal may be niounted in the front ring as usual, which then becomes the bezel, and the part 0 will then be made as a plain ring, which screws down on the lining and extends over the center on the outside, and the dial on the inside holding these parts in just the same manner as de scribed above. My object is in this improvement to provide a lining for a case of the usual construction without being compelled to change the case in any essential feature.

I wish it understood that in the present application I do not claim anything contained in my prior applications filed May 3]., 1883, and June 13, 1883, or my application filed of even date herewith for an improvement in watchcases.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 20 Patent, is-

A lining-band for a'watch, adapted to receive the movement, and provided ateach edge with a threaded section, in combination with a ring case-center closely and accurately fitting the outside of the lining-band, a screw bezel or ring adapted to be turned on the front edge of the band, a screw back cap adapted to be turned upon the back edge of the band, and front and back case-pieces hinged to the center and adapted to be closed upon the latter outside of the bezel and back cap, whereby the case may be accurately adjusted to the lining and securely clamped in place, and the box formed by the lining, bezel, and back cap inclosed within the hinged portions of the case, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
