'UNITED STATES PATENT Ormea.
JUDSON L. THOMSON, OF SYRAOUSE, NEV YORK.
REIN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,819, dated February 19, 1884.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, J UDsoN L. THOMSON, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements inRein-Holders, of which the following. taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and eX- act description. y
This invention relates to the class of rein- Io holders which grip the rein between two jaws.
The object of this invention is to combine said rein-holder with the whip-socket fastening or clamp in such a manner as to firmly support the rein-holder, and at the same time carry the same a proper distance from and in such position in relation to the whip-socket as to admit of placing the latter in the usual proximity to the dash-board, and also to greatly facilitate the application of the rein to 2o the rein-holder.
The invention consists, essentially, in the combination, with a whip-socket clamp, of an arm integral therewith and projecting` laterally therefrom, and a rein-holding clamp se- 2 5 cured to the free end of said arm, all as hereinafter more fully described, and set forth in' the claim.
The annexed drawings illustrate several eX- emplifications of the embodiment of the inven- Figures l and 2 are perspective views of two styles of whip-socket attachments combined with different forms of rein-holders.
Fig. 3 is a perspective viewof another style 5 of whip-socket attachments, with the reinholder proper broken away; and Figs. 4 and 5 are plan views, illustrating further modifications of the invention.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts 4o in all the iigures.
A denotes that part of the whip-socket attachment which encompasses the whip-socket, v
times composed of two parts, las shown in which is iitted to the back of the dash-board rail, a similar bar, d, beingapplied to the opposite side of said' rail, and screws or rivets passing through the ends of the said bars fasten the device to the dash-board.
It will be observed that in the cases where the ring A is expansible the jaws d a are generally the iirmest and heaviest parts, and therefore I prefer to attach the rein-holder to said jaws; but where the ring A is solid, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the rein-holder may be attached thereto at' any eligible or desired position.
C represents the rein-holder-sustaining arm, which projects laterally from the before-describedwhip-socket clamp or fastening, and is made integral therewith, and D is the reinholding clamp secured to the free end of said arm, the latter being made of proper length to carry the rein-holder D away from the whipsocket a sufficient distance to allow the said socket to be fastened in the usual proximity to the dash-board. The aforesaid position of the rein-holder also allows the rein to be thrown around the side edge of the dash-board and drawn into the rein-holding clamp, without necessitating the removal of the whip from the socket or entailing the inconvenience of reaching around the whip in the socket and carrying around it the end of the rein.
I am aware that a stem has been applied directly to the whip-socket clamp for the purpose of holding the rein; but it is obvious that such a device requires increased distance between the whip-socket and dash-board, and also necessitates either the removal of the whip from the socket or `the passing :of the rein around the whip in order to apply the rein to In testimony whereof Ihave hereunto signed the rein-holder, hence such a device does not my name and affixed my seal, in the presence accomplish the object of my invention. of two attesting witnesses, at Syracuse, in the Having described my invention, what I county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, I 5
5 claim as new, and desire to secure by Let-ters this 14th day of June, 1883.
