Description

(No Model.) .R. A. THOMPSON.
, WHEEL PLOW. No. 293,818.* Patented Feb. 19., 1884.
(FIGJ.
- UNir-nn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT A. THOMPSON, OF MONTROSE, MISSOURI.
, WHEEL-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,818, dated February 19, 1884:-
(No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ROBERT A. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montrose, in the county of Henry and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVheel-Plows; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to theletters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in plows; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of a plow constructed according to my invention; and Fig. 3 is a detail view, as will be described.
a is the arch, constructed with the lateral extension, a, having the tongue a secured thereto. This extension a projects over the furrow-wheel, and its end is bent slightly over the periphery of the same, as shown.
a is a scraper pivoted on the extension a in position to be turned down against the side of the furrow-wheel. 1 By this construction it will be seen that the periphery and edge of the furrow-wheel are kept free from accumulations and the draft of the machine is lightened. The side bars, a a, of the arch are slotted to receive the axle of the wheel. The arm a is constructed with a transverse slot or opening, a, near its lower end.
I) b are the axles. The axle bis constructed with a shank, If, which slides in the slot in arm a andis adjusted in the said slot by means of the lever hereinafter described. The spindle b of this axle is bent downward, so that the wheel 0, journaled squarely thereon, will set at an angle to the ground and to the arm (L as shown.
(I is a lever pivoted to the cross-bar of the arch a, and having one end connected with the shank b of axle I), and its other end arranged in convenient reach of the operator. By this lever it will be seen the wheel 0 may be set in or out, as may be desired by the operator.
b is a mortise cut in the arm a", and opening shown. The opening at the side is contracted or made smaller than the inner portion of the made to conform to the shape of the mortise, as shown in Fig. 3. The shank is retained from dropping from the mortise If by the cross pin b 7 I e is a slot cut through the back of the arm (0* into the mortise If. e is a pin passed through slot e and into the shank of the spindle b.
j is a lever pivoted on the arch a, and connected with the pin 0 by the rodf, as shown,
thereon, can be moved up or down, as desired.
\Vhere so desired, racks may be arranged with reference to the levers d and f, so as to hold them at any point desired, and thus provide facilities for securing the laterally-movable inclined wheel a and'the vertically-movable wheel 0 at any suitable point desired by the operator. 0
The main plow-frame G is composed of the bars 9 g and the cross-bar as shown. The -bars 9 9 have their rear ends pivoted, re-
spectively, to the bars a a" of the wheel-frame, and their forward ends are connected by the cross-bar g", as shown. The whiffletree is coupled to the cross-bar g, as shown.
9 is a bar made fast to bar 9 and extended up and bent at g, and adapted to engage the teeth of the rack-bar mounted on the plowstandard, as hereinafter described.
it h are the rods forming the plow-standard. They are separatedat theirgforwardiends, and are pivoted on or near the opposite ends of the rod 9 and their rear ends welded together, forming, substantially, a single bar.
7b2 is the plow.
I? is a rod secured at the convergent point of rods h h, and curvedjupward and forward, forming a loop, which is engaged by the lever hereinafter described.
'5 is a rack-plate mounted on the plow-standard, and having its upper edge curved and provided with a series of notches, as shown.
This plate is arranged in position to engage at the bottom and outer side of the same, as
so that the axle b and the wheel 0, spindled mortise, and the shank of thespindle b is the bent portion of rod in the operation of the device, as will be described.
j is an L-shaped lever pivoted on a bracket mounted on the rod 9 near its rear end. One
arm of this lever extends up within reach of the driver, and its other arm extends forward to the bar If, and its end is bent at right angles to enter the loop formed by the said bar, as before described. I
In operation, it will be seen that by throwing the wheel 0 out, as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 2, the effect will be to force the plow slightly to the left, aiding in cutting a straight furrow, and that by the vertical adjustment of the wheel a the sulky is made to conform to or adapt itself to any inequalities in the ground being worked. By means of the lever j the plow can be raised so as to bring its point at any proper angle to the ground, and when it has been raised as high as desired the plow-standard and the main frame can be locked together by means of the rod 9" and rack i,- or the'plow-standard can be left to swing free on the bar y in is the driv'crs seat.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a plow, the combination of the wheels, the arch having its top bar extended over the furrow-wheel in position'to scrape the periphery thereof, and the scraper a, pivoted 011 the extension a, and working in a line at right angles to the plane of the wheel, and adapted to be turned down against the edge'thereof, 5 and provided with a handle above its pivotal center, whereby it may be operated by the driver, substantially as set forth.
2. The improved sulky for plows, consisting of the arch having the depending arm a, constructed with a vertical mortise, I), open at its lower end and outer side, and having its inner portion made larger than its open side, the arm at, having lateral opening a, the wheel 0, having its axle b fitted to and sliding vertically in the mortises I), and the furrowwheel 0, spindled on the axle Z), the shank I) of which is placed and adjustable laterally in the opening a, and thelevers f and d,connected with and operating, respectively, the wheel a and the wheel 0, as set forth.
3. In a wheel-plow, the combination, sub stantially as described, of the frame G, having its rear end pivoted to the wheel-frame and extended forward therefrom,- the plow-standard having its forward end pivoted to the forward end of the frame G, the rack i, mounted on the plow-standard, the bar 9 secured to the frame G, and adapted to engage the rack 1 and the lcverj, pivoted to the frame G, and connected with the plow-standard, as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT A. THOMPSON.
