PUDDLlNG-FURNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,770, dated February 19, 1884.

Be it known that I, RICHARD H. OATEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Clinton, in the county of Schuylkill, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Puddling-Furnaces, which improvement is1 fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front elevation, partly sectional in line x w, Fig. 2, of the puddlingfurnace embodying my invention. My inventionV relates to improvements in puddling-furnaces; and it consists of a cliamber having circular reciprocating motions.l
It also consists of shoes which depend from the puddling-chamber and support the saine.
It further consists of means for closing the joints on opposite sides of the chamber, respectively, with the furnace and flue.
It further consists of certain other details of construction, as will be hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a puddling chamber, which is supported by means of segmental shoes B, which are secured to and depend from the under side of said chamber, and mounted on rollers O,whose bearings are on a suitable saddle or base, D, said rollers being arranged in a curvilinear direction. (See Fig. 2.)
.E represents a furnace, and F represents a flue, which furnace and iiue are properly supported on opposite sides of the chamber A, and communicate therewith, as at a. v
On each side of the center of the chamber A is a hollow trunnion, G, which is cast with or secured to said chamber and abuts against a boss, H, the bosses being respectively secured to the adjacent inner ends of the furnace E and flue, the periphery of each trunnion and boss being flanged, so as to be ernbraced by a flanged annulus, J, whereby the trunnion and boss of each side are kept close together, and the joint between said parts is kept tight.

K represents a rotary -reciprocating shaft, which is mounted on standards L, and has connected to it cross-heads M, to the ends of which are pivoted arms N, whose lower ends are pivoted to the ends of the chamber A.
To the shaft K is secured a cross-head, P, which, through the medium of arms, crankshafts, and gearing, receives motion from the pulley Q, to which power is .communicated in any suitable manner.
In the chamber A, at each corner thereof,
vis a diagonal block or lining, R, and in one or each end opening of saidchamber is a verti-k cal bridge, S, which thus divides said opening or openings. (See Figs. 2 and 3.)
rIhe re is maintained in the furnace and the puddlingchamber supplied with metal, as usual. Power is applied to the pulley Q, the effect of which is to cause, by means of the intervening mechanism, the reciprocation of the puddling-chamber, the motion of which is curvilinear or circular, whereby the mass of metal is forced from end to end of said chamber and deilected inwardly at said ends,owing to the diagonal cornerblocks R R, these ac-. tions causing the proper puddling ofthe metal, it being noticed that owing to the curvilinear motion of the chamber the molten mass of metal is uniformly directed backward and forward along the iioor of the chamber in between the blocks R It. As the bridges S move with the chamber,the iiames from the furnace are deflected by the varying positions of the bridges, and their directions thereby constantly changed, so that the action of the re on the metal is thorough and uniform.
