PATENT OFFICE.
RELINING RUBBER DENTAL PLATES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,739, dated February 19, 1884.
Application filed October 2.1883.' (ModeL) 'Be it known that I, FRANKT. HYATT, of Norwalk, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Process for Relining' Dental Plates, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
It frequently occurs that rubber dental plates do not fit the roof of the mouth after the said plates have been used a number of years, on account of changes that have taken place in the shape of the roof of the mouth,
and in such cases a new set of teeth must be made.
The object of my invention is to reline the. plates or provide the old gums and teeth with a new roof-plate made to fit against the roof of the mouth.
In carrying out my improved process, I cut out the old plate, so that only the gums holding the teeth remain, and then I form a thin lining of rubber on the top of the gums, and by means of this lining I unite the gums and form a new roof-plate. I
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
' Figure 1 is a plan view of the under side of one set of teeth provided with my improvement. 'Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail cross-sectional elevation of part of the same on the line 00 m, Fig. 1.
The artificial teeth A -are held in gums B, i which are embedded in-a hard-rubber gumframe, 0, which is made integral with the.
original roof-plate, which original roof-plate I cut out, as shown by the U-shaped line in Fig. 1. Thena series of notches, a, are formed in the remaining portion of the gum-frame O, on the in and out sides. The upper surface of the gum-frame O is provided with a plastic lining, D, of rubber, which must be as thin as possible, of which rubber a ridge, D, is also builtup on the outer edge of the gum-frame, and a roof-plate, D", is formed,whioh-is shaped to fit closely against the roof of the mouth, and is provided on its upper surface with the usual suction-recess,E. Tenons I) are formed out of the soft rubber within the notches a, which tenons serve to hold the ridge D and roof D on the gum-frame O. The lining D unites the ridge D and the roof D and strengthens the dental plate, and at the same time permits of forming the top of the gum-frame in such a manner that it fits well against the natural gums.
By relining dental plates in the manner described, old plates of teeth, to which the wearer has become accustomed,.can at any time be.
adjusted or changed to fit well in the mouth. I am aware that it "is not new to make the roof of alloy gum or to connect it with the teeth by a metallic base; but
What I do claim as new and of my invention The processof relining dental plates, con- FRANK T. HYATT.
