4 Claims. (Cl. 248-57) This invention relates to an improved vent pipe hanger construction, and particularly-to a hanger for a prefabricated chimney. The chimney is held in position by a hanger usually attached to floor joists, or other structural members. The hanger serves, therefore, as a foundation for the chimney and its construction is important for the production of a safe, elficient and securely installed. chimney. To serve these purposes the hanger should be of Patented May 17, 1960 or bent upwardly to form a pan or bucket having four vertical sides 11 and a horizontal bottom 12.
Preferably two opposite sides 11 are provided near their ends with horizontal slots 13 to receive 24 gage or the like galvanized steel straps '14.

Accordingly, in view of the above and other considerations, it is an important object of my invention to provide a rugged, durable and-versatile vent pipe hanger construction designed for rapid and efficient manufacture by the use of low cost mass production methods.
Another object is to provide an improved vent pipe centric with the other pipe Sections v hanger construction designed for facile installation while affording adequate support for the vent pipe.
A further object is the provision of a vent pipe hanger construction of low material and installation cost as a part ofa pre-fabricated chimney designed to replace conventional brick and mortar or masonry chimney constructions and the like.
. Additional objects and purposes will appear from the following description considered in the light ofthe accompanying drawings and claims.
Stated in general terms, my invention comprehends a hanger construction for a vent pipe, particularly a triple wall vent pipe. The hanger preferably includes an apertured horizontal plate adapted to receive within the aperture the inner vent pipe or 'flue. This plate is suitably fastened to adjacent joists. A second apertured plate is positioned in spaced parallel relationship'above the first apertured plate by preferably integral spacers so that the apertures of both plates are vertically aligned to receive the flue pipe portion of the vent pipe in the chimney or vent construction. Ingthe specific illustrative embodiment of my invention shown in the drawing, by way of example but not of limitation, an 18 guage or the like galvanized steel plate 10 preferably is square in shape. Its four sides are flanged per portion of each strap is advantageously bent horizontally over the top edge of the joist and vertically downwardly against the outer side of the joist before being nailed thereto.
J The plate 10 is provided with a central hole or aperture '21 of somewhat larger diameter than the outside diameter of the flue pipe 22 so that the flue pipe is most desirably spaced from the edge of the hole 21 and at no point makes contact with it. An upper plate 23 also is provided with an aperture or hole 24 concentric with the hole 21. The hole 24 is effectively of smaller diameter than the hole 21 and is adapted to support the flue pipe 22 at and by means of an abutting collar or annular shoulder 26 formed around the latter.
The upper plate 23 preferably is octagonal or the like with four opposite side edges 27 bent upwardly vertically to hold, center and space the outer wall 28 of the vent pipe in spaced relation above the plate and con- Four tabs 29 are cut partially out of the upper plate inwardly for example, to form legs. The horizontal portions 29' of the tabs or legs 29 are ,welded at 31 to bottom plate 10 as feet to support the upper plate 23. Thus the legs 29 serve fixedly to space the upper plate 23 horizontally above the bottom plate 10.
The hanger of this invention is capable of being installed in relatively simple and rapid operations and so too is the pipe supported thereon.
The required number and length of triple wall vent pipe sections are assembled as more fully set forth in applicants co-pending application SerialNo. 720,236, filed March 10, 1958. Optionally, the resulting assembly is held vertically and its lower end fitted into the hanger of the invention while the latter is in a horizontal position as shown in Figure 1. The assembled vent pipe and hanger combination can then be raised into position between adjacent joists 19, and if so, the upper portions of straps 14 are bent horizontally over the top edges of the joists 19 and downward against the outer sides of the joists as heretofore noted. Nails 18 are driven into the joists through holes 17 in the straps to securely fasten the hanger between the joists and firmly hold the assembled vent pipe vertically in position. This completes the installation.
' Alternatively, the pipe can be supported on and assembled in the pre-positioned and secured hanger assembly. It will be noted that the lower end of the flue pipe '22 rests on the edge of circular hole 24 of the upper plate 23 at the annular shoulder 26. The line pipe 22 when hot does not therefore touch the lower plate 10 because the diameter of hole 21 is made appreciably larger than the outside diameter of the pipe 22. Thus heat is not conducted from hot flue pipe 22 directly to bottom plate In flowing through this path, a large part of the heat from a pipe 22 passes into the rising air stream around pipe 22,
or is otherwise radiated or dissipated away so that hotthe, upper plate 23 preferably at the openings 33 so that cooling air can pass through the openings 33 from said intermediate casing or pipe walls. These openings also reduce the'area of contact between the upper plate 23 and casing 32' and permit cooling airto circulate downwardly inside outer Wall 28 and upwardly inside intermediate casing 32 and around hot flue gas pipe 22. This action serves further to keep the bottom plate relatively cool.
Member 34 is one of several radial fin spacers cut out of the wall of intermediate casing 32 and spacing the intermediate casing within the outer casing and moreover resulting in a series of additional air-circulating openings 36 to assist the desired thermo-syphon action of the resultant assembly as more fully described in my co-pending application.
While I have herein shown and described'rny invention in what I have conceived to be the most practical and preferred embodiment, it is recognized that departures can be made therefrom within the scope of my invention, which is not to be limited to the details disclosed. herein, but is to be accorded the full scope of the claims so as to embrace any and all equivalent structure.
Having described my invention, what I claim: as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A hanger for a triple wall vent pipe of a. type having an extending inner wall having a supporting rib thereon, comprising, an apertured horizontal plate means for receiving the-inner wall of, the .pipe, fastening means for attaching the plate means to adjacent joists, a second apertured plate means in parallel spaced relationship above the first mentioned plate means, spacer means for supporting the second plate means above the first mentioned plate means'with the apertures thereof in vertical alignment,
the second plate means adapted to support the supporting rib on the: inner wall of the vent pipe, and the lower ends of the outer and intermediate walls of the vent pipe.
2. A hanger for a triple wall vent pipe of the type having an extending inner wall having a supporting rib there on, comprising a horizontal plate having a circular hole therethrough for receiving the inner wall of the pipe with air space between the pipe and the plate, fastening means for attaching the plate to adjacent joists in abuilding, a second. horizontal plate having a circular hole therethrough of smaller diameter than that through the first mentioned plate for engaging the supporting rib. on the inner wall of the pipe, 2. second plate for supporting the intermediate and outer walls of the vent pipe and being spaced in parallel relationship above the first mentioned plate, and spacer means for supporting the second plate above the first plate with the holes thereof in concentric alignment, said spacer means having relatively small cross sectional area for heat flow between said plates.
3. A hanger for a triple wall vent pipe of the type having an extending inner wall having a supporting rib thereon, comprising a horizontal plate having a circular hole therethrough for receiving the inner wall of the pipe with air space between the pipe and the plate, a plurality of straps mounted on the plate for attaching the plate to adjacent joists in a building, a second horizontal plate for supporting the intermediate and outer walls of the vent pipe and having a circular hole therethroughof smaller diameter than that through the first mentioned plate for engaging the supporting rib on the'inner wall of the vent ipe, the second plate being spaced in parallel relationship above the first plate, and a plurality of tabs cut out of the second plate andconnected to the first plate for supporting the second plate above the first plate with the circular holes thereof in concentric alignment, the cutouts in said second plate being at the lower edge of the intermediate wall of the vent pipe allowing cool air to circulate downwardly through the cutouts from inside the outer wall of the vent pipe and to the inside of the intermediate wall.
4. A vent support for triple Wall vent pipe of the type having an extending inner wall having a supporting rib thereon, comprising substantially horizontal bucket-like means for providing a basic support, strap means for supporting said bucket-like means in a building structure, a plate-like means above same for supporting said vent pipe, means between said plate like means and said bucket-like means for retaining each of said means in vertically spaced relationship from one another, outer pipe centering means at edge portions of said plate-like means for. engaging the lower-end portion of an outer pipe of said triple wall vent pipe and retaining the same against lateral movement, said plate-like means and said bucket-like means having concentric central openings to accommodate the innermost pipe of said triple wall pipe, the opening in the plate-like means being adapted to engage and support the supporting rib on said innermost pipe of said triple wall pipe and the opening in the bucket like means having edges spaced from said innermost pipe whereby said innermost pipe is adapted to be supported on the edge of and depend through said opening in said plate like means,
