(cl. azz-525) The present invention relates to dispensing devices for containers filled with fluid materials, such as liquids or free flowing powders and, more particularly, to improvements in such devices which have means for controlling the discharge of the material from the container.
Heretofore, Vmany attempts have been made to pro'vide dispensing devices of the applicator or discharge directing type which included valve-like means for opening the discharge passage to dispense material from a container therethrough and to seal the passage at other times to preserve the contents of the container in a manner to prevent evaporationY or deterioration thereof. In spite of the great need for such devices, none of the prior attempts have resulted in providing an entirely satisfactory device; The primary objections to such prior devices have been complexity and excessive cost, and failure to provide an eiective seal after the container had been initially opened for use.
Accordingly an object of the present invention is to provide a dispensing head which overcomes the disadvantages of and objections to prior devices of this type.
Another object is to provide such a dispensing head which is readily manipulated to open and close the discharge passage thereof. v
Another object is to provide such a dispensing head which electively seals the material within the container.
Another object is to provide such a dispensing head which can be embodied in all forms of container closures or can be formed integrally with the container.
A further object is to provide such a dispensing head which is simple and economical in construction and is' reliable in operation. l
Other and further objects will be obvious upon an understanding of the illustrative embodiment about to be described, or will be indicated in the appended claims,
and various advantages not referred to herein will occur' to4 one skilled in the art upon employment of the invention in practice.
In accordance with the present invention, the foregoing objects are accomplished by providing a dispensing head for a container which comprises an element, such as a closure cap or insert for a container and an element formed integrally with a container, the first element being formed with a tubular portion having a lower end wall adapted to face the interior of the container and being provided with an upwardly facing recess and aperture means extending therethrough at the recess and having a bore extending upwardly from the wall to itsY upper end, a rod-like member slidably mounted in the bore having a passageway extending therethrough and out of registry with the aperture means and having a formation at its lower end shaped to snugly fit and till the recess to provide a seal between the aperture means and the passageway, and cooperating formations at the lower end of the member and the upper end of the bore for preventing separation of the member from the tubular portion.

The closure 14 comprises a-skirt 1S formed with a rib 15 for cooperating with the bead 12 of the neck to secure the closure to the` container andl a cover portion 17 formed with a tubular depending portion 18 extending into the neck of the container. The tubular portion 18 has a lower end wall 19 facing the interior of the container, an upper surface of the wall being provided with an upwardly facing recess 20. Aperture means 21 extend through the wall 19 at the recess. The portion 18 also has a bore 22 extending from the wall to its upper end and outwardly through the cover portion 17 of the closure. The recess, as shown herein, is a circular groove which forms a circular central boss 24. However, the groove could be generally annular, that is, have any polygonal shape or the recess could have any desired shape without providing the central boss. Also, the aperture means could include one or more apertures depending upon the viscosity or flow resistance of the material to be dispensed.
The dispensing head further includes a rod-like member 25 slidably mounted in the core and having a passageway 26 extending therethrough and out of registry with the aperture means 21. The member 25 has a formation 27 at its lower end which is shaped to snugly fit and ll the recess 20 and thereby provide a seal between the aperture means 21 and the passageway 26. In the illustrative embodiment, this formation includes a cylindrical portion formed with a central recess for receiving the boss 24.
The member 25 is prevented from separation from the tubular portion 18 by an enlargement 28 at its lower end and a shoulder 29 adjacent the upper end of the bore 22.
In Fig. 3, a dispensing head is shown which is essentially like that shown in and described with reference to Figs. 1 and 2, except that the closure and container neck are provided with screw threads for securing them together, and that the aperture means include a single aperture 21.
In Fig. 4, a dispensing head is shown which is essentially like that shown in Fig. 3, except that the closure is an insert having an annular groove 30 therein for receiving a portion 31 of the container defining an opening therefor. Also, the member 25 is shown in the open position to establish communication between the aperture 21 and the passageway 26.
' In Fig. 5, a dispensing head is shown which is essentially like that shown in Figs. 3 and 4, except that the tubular portion 18 is formed integrally with the container, which may be constructed of a synthetic resin, such as polyethelyene, rather than being embodied in a closure.
Likewise, in the'embodiment illustrated by Figs. 1 to 4, the closure and the rod-like member preferably are formed of a similar synthetic resin which enables the en`l largement 28 to be forced into the bore 22 and then be y retainedl by the shoulder 29.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the present invention provides a simple, practical and economical dispensing head, which is readily manipulated and which forms a reliable and effective sealv for the contents of thel container.

What is claimed is:
1. A dispensing head fora container comprising an element formed with a depending tubular portion having a lower` end wall adapted to face the interior of the container and` provided with an upwardly facing recess and aperture means extending therethrough at said recess and having a bore extending from said wall to its upper end, said recess constitutingv a generally annular groove and dening a central boss, a rod-like member slidably mounted in saidk bore having a passageway extending therethrough and out of registry with said aperture means and having a formation at its lower end shaped to snugly iiht and fill Ysaid recess to provide a seal between said aperture means and said passageway, said formation including a central recess for receiving said boss, and cooperating formations at the lower end of said member and the upper end of said bore for preventing separation of said member from said tubular portion.
2. A dispensing head according tol claim 1, wherein said element is a closure adapted for securement toy a container.
3. A dispensing head according to claim 2, wherein said closure is a cap having a skirt formed with means for securing the same to a container.
4. A dispensing head according to claim 2, wherein said closure is an insert formed with anannular groove for receiving portions of a container defining a circular opening therein. e l
5. A dispensing head according to claim 1, wherein said element is a container formed of a synthetic resin.
