The alarm mechanism is of any desired kind, that here shown consisting ofthetoothed wheel D, secured to the mainspring-arbor, the spring J fastened at one end to a fixed post and at the other end to the arbor, pinion I, gearing with wheel I), escapement-wheel F, vibrating escapement H, bell-hammer G, connected thereto, and bell B.

Tis a handle ixed to the mainspring-arbor, by means of which the alarm mechanism is wound up and the detent K set in engagement with its stop. The words up77 and down upon the casing indicate the condition of the alarm mechanism-th at is,wh ether it is Wound up or run down.
In order to allow the armv K to pass the stop or shoulder on the stop-plate L in the act of running down or winding up, I have devised what I term a guard-plate,77 (shown in detail in Fig. 5,) and consisting of a plate, M, having an elongated opening or slot,O,through which passes a pin secured to plate L. A spring applied to the guard-plate tends to hold it out, and in the position shown in Fig. 5, so that its edge projects beyond the upper edge of the shoulder upon the stop-plate, and in the act of winding up the arm K will come into engagement with the guard-plate, but Will force the same over to one side until it snaps by it. Vhen, however, the arm is disengaged from the step or shoulder on the plate L, so as to release the alarm mechanism, said arm moving in the reverse direction will ride upon the curved edge of the guard-plate, and will thereby be kept from engaging with the step. The mechanism is thus allowed to run completely down. To set the device, the mechanism is Wound up and the arm 'K turned until it comes against the square edge of the plate M, at which point it is stopped and allowed to engage with the shoulder on the plate L.
S is the knob or handle by means of which the bolt is operated from the inside of the door, so that it can spring back without affecting the alarm. The handleS is fixed permanently or otherwise, as desired, to the operating arm or key It, which plays between two stops, X X, and is mounted upon a spindle carrying a coiled spring, as shown, which latter serves tohold the arm out of line with the bolt until said arm is forced back against the tension of the same into position, where its web may, by turning the handle,A be caused to lift the bolt away from the stop-pin Y. As the arm R is turned, it lifts the free end of the bolt, which then rides on the pin Y, so that the shoulder N passes above the detent K and avoids it when the bolt is forced back. By this means the alarm mechanism is prevented from acting. By areverse movement of the arm the bolt is thrown back to lock the door, the spring Q at the same time acting. to force its free end down, so as to cause it to engage with the pin Y.
I do not limit myself to any particular construction of the alarm mechanism, as it is obvious that many other forms may be used in its place. It is also obvious that other dctent devices might be used in place of 'the spring-arm K, if properly arrangedto be operated and released by the sidewise movement of the free end ofthe bolt, or by the shoulder N, or equivalent device, upon a longitudinal movement without lifting.
Vhat I claim as my invention is- '1. The combination, substantially as described, of an alarm mechanism and detent with a laterally and vertically movable sliding bolt having its fulcrnm in the edge of the casing, and provided with a releasing shoulder or projection for releasing the alarm mechanism upon a longitudinal movement of said bolt in a straight line.
2. The combination, with a laterally and vertically movable bolt, of an alarm mechanism whose detent is arranged in the path of the bolt when moved laterally by any unauthorized means, a. releasing projection or shoulder upon the side of' the bolt for releasing the alarm mechanism upon a longitudinal roo backward movement in a straight line, andan i i i operating key or knob for throwing back the bolt, constructed in the manner described, to lift the end of the bolt carrying the releasingprojection, so that the latter will avoid the detent of the alarm mechanism.
3. The combination, with the alarm-detent mounted on mainspring-arbor of an alarm mechanism, of the bolt C, having operatingshoulder N, and the lateral and vertical pressure-springs l? Q, as and for the purpose described.
4. The combination, with the alarm-detent, of the bolt C, projecting through an opening in the casing, and adapted to have a vertical and lateral movement upon the edges of said opening as a fulcrum, and alarm-detent arranged in the path of the releasing-projection N upon the bolt, and an operating knob or handle, S, provided with means for lifting the free end of the bolt, so that when the bolt is thrown back the alarm will not be sounded.
5. The combination, with an alarm mechanism, ofthe bolt C, confined at one end within an opening in the easing and free to move vertically and horizontally at its other, the spring W, the catch Y, and the operating knob or handle for lifting the free end of the bolt.
