(Cl. 118-3) This invention relates to an apparatus for applying glue or any other viscous or liquid substance to a surface.
An object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of this type that will apply glue in a small stream or in drop form as desired. 1
Another object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of this type having a glue receiving chamber, 01ifices communicating with the chamber and spring biased closures for said orifices that when applied to a surface will move inwardly to open the orifices to permit glue to be discharged from the chamber through the orifices.
A further object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of this type that is simple and rugged in construction, efiicient in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists of the novel details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of an apparatus embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a rear view of the apparatus of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the apparatus of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view on the, line '66 of Fig. 4; g
Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view on the line 7--7 of Fig. 4;
Fig. 8 is a vertical sectional view on the line 8-8 of Fig. 4; and
Fig. 9 is a vertical sectional view on the line 9' 9 of Fig. 3.
Referring more in detail tothe drawings, wherein like parts are designated by like reference numerals, the refer.-
' ence numeral 16 is used to generally designate a glue applying apparatus embodying the invention.
The apparatus 10 comprises a front plate 11, side plates 12 and 13, respectively, and a rear plate 14.
The front plate is provided with five equally spaced rows of five orifices 15 providing orifices in all.
A partition 16 is spaced from the front plate 11 and secured at its opposite ends to the side walls 12 and-13, respectively. A top plate 17 and a bottom plate 18 are secured to the top and bottom edges of the partition 16 and the top. and bottom edges of the front plate 11. The top and bottom edges of the front plate 11 and the forward edges of the top plate 17 and bottom plate 18 are joined by dovetailed joints 19. g
The top and bottom plates 17 and 18, the partition 16 and the side plates 12 and 13, respectively, form a chamber 20. An opening 21 is provided in the top plate 17 adjacent one end thereof and glue maybe pumped, poured or fed by gravity into the-chamber 26 by means of the opening 21.
A plunger plate 22 is positioned in the chamber 20 and is mounted for sliding movement therein by means of a pair of plunger rods 23 and 24, respectively. The rods 23 and Marc connected to the plate 22 by reduced threaded studs 22.
The rods 23 and 24 are arranged in parallel relation to nitd hates Patent 0 "ice ' Patented May 10, 1960 each other and extend through parallel openings 25 in the rear plate 14 and parallel openings 26 in the partition 16. A bushing 27 is positioned in each of the openings 25 and a bushing 28 is positioned in each of the openings 26.
A collar 29 is secured to each of the rods 23 and 24 by a set screw 30, a pressure spring 31 is mounted on each of the rods 23 and 24 and the springs 31 by abutting the rear wall 14 and the collars 29 apply pressure on the rods 23 and 24 to urge the plate 22 forwardly within the chamber 20. The collars 29 may be adjusted on the rods 23 and 2 to vary the pressure of the springs 31.
The plate 22 is provided with threaded openings 32 that aline with the orifices 15 and pins 33 each have a threaded stud 34 thereon that is threadably received in one of the openings 32. The opposite ends of the pins 33 have a reduced portion 35 that extends through the orifices 15 and a shoulder 36 on each of the pins 33 provides a closure for the orifices 15. A gasket 37 is positioned adjacent the inner face of the front plate 11 to seal the orifices 15.
In operation the reduced portions 35 of the pins 33 are placed in contact with a surface on which glue is to be applied.
Pressure is applied to the apparatus 10 to force the plate 22 inwardly within the chamber 26 against the action of the springs 31. As the plate 22 moves inwardly, the shoulders 36 move inwardly to open the orifices 15. This action permits glue in the chamber 26 to be discharged through the orifices 15. Steady pressure on the applicator it) permits a stream of glue to flow, but a quick'pressure and release permits the glue to be dis charged 'indrop form.
The release of pressure on apparatus 10 permits the springs 31 to move the plate 22 forwardly in the chamber 20 to force the pins 33 to close the orifices 15.
The action of the apparatus is to provide uniform drops or streams of glue onto the surface as desired.
It is believed that from the foregoing description the operation and construction of the apparatus will be apparent tothose skilled in the at and it is to be understood that changes in the minor details of construction,
arrangement and combination of parts may be resorted to the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
A glue applying apparatus comprising front and rear plates, side plates connecting the front and rear plates in spaced parallel relation to each other, a partition connected to said side plates intermediate of said front and rear plates, a top and bottom plate connecting the opposite edges of said partition to the edges of said front plate to provide a chamber, a plunger plate positioned in said chamber, plunger rods connected to said plunger plate and extending through said partition, springs on said plunger rods to tension ,said plunger rods to urge said plunger plate forwardly in said chamber, said front plate having a plurality of orifices therein, a plurality of pins affixed to said plunger plate and extending forwardly therefrom, and a reduced forward portion in each pin each extending through one of said orifices and each forming a shoulder. normally closing its associated orifice,'said apparatus being operable by rearward pressure upon said reduced portions of said pins against the action of said springs.
