Description

UNITED. STATES.
DANIEL E. LADD ANDELIJAII J. B. WHITAKER, AOF BAILTIMORE, MARYLAND,l
. PATENT @Price sAID LADD AssIeNoR 'ro WILLIAM T. WHITTAKER, on SAME' PLACE.
SHOW-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,582, dated February 12, 1884.
I Application filed August 2, 1.882. Renewed December :'20, 1883. (No model.)
T all. whom, it may concer-nf:4
Be yit known that we, DANI.. E. LADD and ELIJAH J. B. WHITAKER, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Show-Cases, of whichthe following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to certain improvements in show-cases, and the same will first be described, and then designated inthe claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a vertical section of the show-case. Fig. 2
shows a modification by which the rod I mayV be dispensed with. Fig. 3 isa view of the weight. Fig. 4 is a .plan yview of the base. Fig. 5 is a side view of the show-case.
The letter A designates the base, made of wood or metal, having a circular form, and supported upon feet b, which sustain it at a slight elevation. C designates a blown-glass l shade of semi-Ovoidal form, which constitutes both case and cover. Plates d and dare secured, inside and outside, at the top of the glass shade, substantially in the manner set forth in United States Letters PatentNo. 255,388, granted Danl. E. Ladd, March 21, 1882.
' A knob or handle, e, is secured to the outside this bar and stands vertically from the centerv of the base, and is of size to freely enter the tube F, and serves as a guide, up and down on which the tube slides. A hole, k, in the bar admits the passage of the catch g on the collar of the tube, and a vlatch-bar, m, onv the lower side of the bar h engages with the catch, and
thereby holds the tube and glass shade down. This latch-bar is kept normally in position to Vbe in contact with the catch by a spring,";c.
Three or four standards, L, are secured upon the base about the central opening, A', and
vand over a pulley and then down, and is attached to a weight. Each of the several cords may be attached to a separate weight; or, as in the present example, all the cords may be attached to ajsingle weight, s, which is ringshaped. The central opening, s', ofthe weight affords room for the tube and rod. The gravity ofthe weight may exactly counterpoise that of the glass shade, in which case the shadel may be raised and lowered by vgrasping the* knob or handle e, and sustained at any position 5 or the gravity of the weight may be sufciently in excess of that of the glass shade to' cause the latter to run up when the latch-bar m isdisengaged from the catch g.
' The glass shade, which constitutes the walls and top, or, in other words, is both case and Cover, is sustained upon the vertical support- F, and is thereby raised and lowered. While the rod I serves as a guide for the tube, and prevents the latter from canting, it is not absolutely essential, as the cap-piece L" may be so made as to serve efficiently as a guide.
Fig. 2 shows the cap-piece, provided with a collar, p, fitted in the hole p. This collar is secured rigidly by a ange, p2, and the tube F moves through the collar, the latter acting as a guidel to prevent the tube from tilting or canting. Considered thus (that is, if the rod I were dispensed with) the support F may be merely a rod and not necessarily a tube; but
the support must be a tube only when a rod,
I, is used. The support F, cord, and weights are inclosed by a case, T, whose sides are provided with panels containing glass mirrors u. As these mirrors constitute a background, all articles which m ay be inclosed within the showcase cover are reiiected, thereby producing a beautiful effect.
Having described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination, with ashow-case cover IOO having a vertical support rigidly attached to oal support may move freely, standards to and depending from the center of the cover, sustain the cap-piece, cords and Weights to adapted to move vertically, of a cap-piece, L, oounterpoise the show-oase cover, and a latchserving as a guide for the support, standards bar to engage with the catch, as set forth. 15 to sustain the cap-piece, and cords and Weights In testimony whereof We affix our signatures to oounterpoise the show-onse cover, as set in presence of two Witnesses. forth. DANIEL E. LADD'.
2. The combination, with the show-Case ELIJAH J. B. VHITAKER. cover C, having a vertical support on which XVitnesses: the same is sustained, provided with a catch, JNO. T. MADDOX, g, of a cap-piece, L', through which the verti- JOHN E. l\IoRRIS l
