1 Claim. c1. 240-78) This invention relates to a lighting fixture for recessed ceiling mounting.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a lighting fixture for recessed ceiling mounting formed essentially of two parts, one part comprising a frame member which is secured to the ceiling and the other part comprising a reflector or housing detachably secured to and supported by the frame. The reflector or housing may be secured to and detached from the frame for installation of the fixture and for servicing of same after the frame has been secured to the ceiling surface.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a lighting fixture for recessed ceiling mounting formed essentially of two parts, with one of the parts supporting the electrical components in assembled mounted relationship prior to the mounting of the parts so that same may be readily and quickly secured to a ceiling structure and when thus secured be readily accessible for connection of the lead-in electrical conductors, and wherein the second part forming the reflector may be easily and quickly attached to the first part.
Another object of this invention is to provide .a lighting fixture of the foregoing character formed of two parts, namely a frame and a reflector, the frame supporting a wired junction box so that after the frame is mounted the junction box is readily accessible through the opening in the frame, the reflector being readily attachable to the frame after the frame has been mounted and also readily detachable therefrom. Another object of this invention is to provide a lighting fixture of the foregoing character having a frame and a detachable reflector, with the frame provided with a lamp socket and a junction box connected by a fixed conduit which supports the conducting wires, said socket, junction box and conduit being mounted in fixed-relation to the frame so that when the frame is mounted, prior to attachment of the reflector, the parts are in their assembled relationship, with the junction box readily accessible for connecting the lead-in wire.
Another object of this invention is to provide a lighting fixture of the foregoing character in which the lamp socket is supported on the reflector.
Other objects will become apparent as this description progresses.

Reference will first be had to the structure shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive. The fixture generally indicated at 10 comprises a rough in frame generally indicated at 12 and a reflector generally indicated at 14 which is detachably secured thereto, as will be described. The rough in frame 12 is rectangular in plan and has side walls 16, 17, 18 and 19 joined together and inwardly extending flanges 16a, 17a, 18a and 19a formed at right angles to said side walls. A large rectangular shaped open area 20 is provided which is bounded by said flanges. A pair of tongues 22 spaced from each other are struck out or stamped from flange 17a and said tongues extend downwardly for engagement with the reflector 14; The opposed flange 19a supports a threaded screw or fastening element 24 to engage the reflector.
Fixedly secured by suitable rivets to the top of flange 17a of the frame 12 is a socket box 28 having a front opening which is closed by a detachable plate 30. The plate 30 has a pair of rearwardly extending slotted cars 31 which engage screws 32 in the side walls of the box to removably secure said plate thereto. The plate 30 has an enlarged opening 34 within which is supported an electrical lamp socket 36 for supporting a light bulb 37. The socket is attached to said plate by any conventional attaching means.
Secured to the side wall'18 of the frame by suitable fastening members 38 is an angle bracket 41 providing a horizontal support upon which is fixedly secured a terminal wiring compartment or junction box generally indicated at 40. Connected at one end to the socket box 28 and at its opposite end to the junction box is a rigid L shaped pipe or tubular conduit 42 which communicates with the interiors of the socket box and junction box and forms a passageway for the conducting wires. One end of the conducting wires is connected to the electrical socket 36 and the other end of the conducting wires terminates in the junction box 40 for interconnection with the lead-in wires, as is well understood. The junction box 40 is provided with removable front and rear plates 44 and 45 and the rear plate 45 is provided with the usual knock-out portions, as is well understood in the art, whereby the lead wires may be passed for connection to the conducting wires in the junction box. It will be seen that the socket box 28 for supporting the socket 36 and the junction box 40 are connected by the rigid tubular conduit 42 and the electrical conductors are therein contained and connected to the socket so that the rough in frame and the foregoing described elements form in effect a:single integral unit ready for instantaneous installation.
The side walls 16, 17, 18 and 19 of the frame 12 each have a pair of spaced loop shaped ears 46 preferably die struck from the side walls. The ears 46 receive the vertical legs 48 of the hanger bars 50, best shown in Fig. 3, which hanger bars 50 are suitably secured to stringers 52 Within the ceiling of the room. The vertical legs 48 of the hanger bars are slotted and engage screws or fastening elements 54 secured to the side walls of the frame 12 to permit vertical adjustment of the frame 12 with respect to the hanger bars 50. The frame is thereby securely supported in the ceiling.
The upper member of the fixture generally indicated at 14 is contoured so that it serves as a reflector and has a parabolic dome 56 and downwardly and outwardly inclined substantially flat side walls 58 and a front inclined wall 60. The rear wall 62 of the reflector is substantially vertical as at 64 at its central portion and outwardly inclined at its opposite adjacent end portions as at 66. The vertical portion 64 of the rear wall has an enlarged circular opening 68 for alinement with the socket 36 and through which the socket extends. The bottom of the reflector 14 terminates in outwardly hori- Patented May 3, 1960 zontally extending side flanges 58a and front and rear flanges 60a and 62a which form a continuous lip around the reflector to engage the underside of the flanges of the frame 12. A pair of elongated slots 70 are provided in the rear flange 62a which engage the ears 22. The opposite or front flange 60a has a bayonet shaped slot 72 to engage the fastening member 24 on the frame 12.
7 After the frame 12 is secured to the ceiling, as previously described, and the electrical connection is made to the electrical conductor in junction box 40, the reflector 14 may be inserted from the bottom of the frame and secured to the cars 22. After the enlarged opening of the bayonet slot 72 passes the head of the fastening element 24, the reflector is shifted slightly laterally to engage the reduced portion of the slot 72 which will lock, the reflector in locking position. The reflector may be readily removed by shifting it, as will be understood. A diffusing member generally indicated at 74 and best shown in Fig. 3 is supported by the frame 12. The diffusing member comprises a holder 75 which supports a diffusing glass 76. The holder 75 has secured to it at its opposite sides U shaped clips generally indicated at 77, whose legs 78 terminate in outwardly extending ends 79. The horizontal flanges 16a and 18a of the frame are provided with slots 80 which receive the legs 78 of the clips. The diifusing member 74 may be lowered for ready servicing of the fixture and the difiusing member may be removed from the rough in frame by bringing the legs together to clear the slots 80.
Figure 6 shows a modified form of construction. This construction differs from that previously described in that the socket box is not mounted on the rough in frame but is mounted on the reflector and a flexible conduit connection is established between the junction box and socket box. The rough in frame generally indicated at 12b is similar to the rough in frame 12. The reflector 14b is generally similar to reflector 14 except that on its rear wall 62b a socket box 28b is secured thereto, which socket box supports a socket extending into the reflector through a suitable opening. The junction box 40b is similar to junction box 40 and is secured in the same manner to the frame 12b by a right angled bracket 41b. A flexible metal conduit or B-X 82 connects at its opposite ends to the junction box 40b and to the socket box 28b and communicates with the interior of each for passage of the electrical conducting wires.
Fig. 7 shows a modified construction for supporting the junction box. Instead of mounting the junction box supporting bracket in a fixed immovable position with relation to the rough in frame it is mounted so that it and the junction box may be moved vertically up or down. in relation to the rough in frame whenever the installation so requires. A pair of rigid solid straps or bars 84,
each having elongated slots 85 are permanently secured or riveted by fastening elements 86 to the frame 120. The vertical leg of the bracket 41c is secured to the strap 84 by fastening elements 88 through the slotted portion 85. Thus the bracket 41c and junction box 40c thereon are adjustable vertically with respect to the straps and the frame.
It will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made from the foregoing without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A fixture for recessed ceiling mounting comprising a housing formed of an upper section constituting the reflecto'r'and a separate lower section, said lower section having short inwardly extending horizontal flanges at the top thereof to define an enlarged rectangular shaped opening inwardly of said flanges, said upper section having outwardly extending horizontal flanges defining a rectangular shape, means for detachably securing the outwardly extending flanges of said upper section to the inwardly extending flanges of the lower section to detachably support the upper section in locking engagement with the lower section, a socket box for supporting a lamp socket, said socket box being fixedly secured to one of the flanges of said lower section exteriorly of said lower and upper sections, a junction box fixedly secured to said lower section on a side adjacent the mounting of the socket box and on substantially the same plane as said socket box, a rigid conduit connecting said junction box and said socket box, an electrical conductor connected to said lamp socket and passing through said rigid conduit and terminating in said junction box, said lower section being adapted when mounted in a ceiling to support said socket box and junction box and electrical conductor in a fixed assembled relationship so that the terminal of said conductor in said junction box is in position for ready attachment to a lead-in wire, said enlarged rectangular shaped opening in said lower section permitting access to said junctionbox for connecting said lead-in wire when said upper section has been detached from said lower section.
