7 Claims. (Cl. 206-47) My invention relates to stop leak preparations and more particularly to a stop leak package.
Stop leak preparations have heretofore involved a mixture of solid comminuted stop leak ingredients in a liquid carrier, the same being sold in suitable jars or other containers. After a period of time, the solid matter is prone to settle or pack on the bottom of the container, thus involving some difiiculty in emptying the contents thereof into a cooling system radiator or the like where it is to be employed.
Among the objects of the present invention are,
(1) To provide a novel and improved package containing a stop leak preparation;
(2) To provide a novel and improved stop leak package wherein the package will empty in its entirety at the first pouring and without the necessity of a preliminary stirring or mixing;
(3) To provide a novel and improved stop leak package in which stop leak material in pellet form is protected against breakage or disintegration during either shipment or a storage;
(4) To provide a novel and improved form of stop leak material.
Additional objects of my invention will be brought out in the following description of the same, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing wherein the figure depicts one form of a package embodying the features of the present invention.
Referring to the drawing for details of the invention in one form, the solid ingredients are molded into a pellet 1 for immersion in a carrier liquid 3 other than water, within a suitable container such as a jar 5 with a screw cap 7. The pellet material is held together by a binder which is insoluble in the carrier liquid but soluble in water. Such binder, in the embodiment of the invention illustrated, may be in the form of a coating 9. Not only does the binder, in the form of a coating, tend to hold the pellet against disintegrating, but the buoyant effect of the carrier liquid serves to cushion the pellet against breakage from shock or blows against the container during shipping or handling.
The form of package illustrated in the drawing and described above, is admirably suited to the packaging of the stop leak preparation described in detail in my re-issue patent for Stop Leak Preparation, No. Re.-24,094 of Nov. 22, 1955, which basically involves a mixture of a rhizome flour, such as ginger root flour, with a soluble oil.
In packaging such preparation in accordance with the above described embodiment of the present invention, the ginger root flour is mixed with sufiicient soluble oil to produce saturation thereof, following which the flour in its oil saturated condition is compressed and extruded and the extrusion cut into pellets. These pellets are then put through a bath of polyvinyl alcohol as a binder to produce a coating of a thickness preferably of the order of three or four mills. Such binder is soluble in water but insoluble in oil, and is obtainable on the market nited States Patent 0 I 2,935,189 Patented May 3, 19 6l] either under the trademark Elvanol put out by the D11 pont Co. or Vinol, a product of the Colton Chemical Co. a subsidiary of the Air Reduction Co. The coated pellet is then placed in a container such as the screw cap jar containing suflicient soluble oil therein to substantially fill the jar upon immersion of the pellet therein.
The maximum permissible size of the pellet is controlled by the radiator opening or other opening through which the pellet is to enter the cooling system in which it is to be employed, and it will be appreciated that upon removal of the cap from the container and pouring the contents thereof into the radiator opening for example, the pellet will be guided into such opening by the flow of oil from the container. No preliminary mixing or stirring is required and the entire contents will be disposed of in the one pouring. p
While only one pellet has been illustrated in the draw ing, it is apparent that a number of smaller pellets, simi; larly formed and sufiicient to make up the desired quantity of stop leak material, may be immersed in the oil in lieu of the single pellet illustrated. Such smaller pellets could permit of the packaging in a given size container, of a greater volume of the solid stop leak ingredients while retaining the same advantages or free flow of such pellets into the radiator or like opening.
In lieu of utilizing the binder as a coating to retain the solid material in pellet form, the binder may be incorporated into the pellet, in which case the binder will be dispersed throughout each pellet, instead of over the surface thereof as a coating. In such case, I prefer to utilize as a binder, concentrated sal soda obtainable under the trade name Con-Sal.
In utilizing such material, I prefer to mix the ginger root flour in a water solution of the sal soda to a paste consistency, form pellets therefrom which are then dried. The pellets are packaged in oil, preferably a soluble oil, which permeates and saturates the pellet without causing disintegration thereof, due to the presence of the binder which is oil-insoluble.
In lieu of mixing the binder with the flour, the dried root may be saturated with the binder prior to grinding the root into flour.
Whether the binder be employed as a coating or whether it is dispersed throughout the pellet, upon immersion of such pellet in the water of a cooling system, the binder will dissolve and permit the pellet to disintegrate, thereby freeing the oil saturated particles of the ginger root flour for dispersion throughout the cooling system to seek out and seal such leaks as might exist.
From the foregoing description of my invention, it will be apparent that the same fulfills all the objects thereof and because the same may be subject to alteration and modification without departing from the underlying principles involved, I do not desire to be limited in my protection to the details illustrated or described except as may be necessitated by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A stop leak package for a cooling system comprising stop leak material held together in pellet form by a water-soluble binder, a container, a liquid in said container which may advantageously be added to such cooling system and in which liquid said binder is insoluble, and at least one pellet in said liquid, said package offering protection to said pellet and permitting dispensing of said pellet with ease into the opening of a radiator or like opening of a cooling system.

A stop leak package comprising stop leak material held together in pellet form by an oil-insoluble watersoluble binder, a container, oil in said container, and at least one pellet in said oil, said package offering protec tion to said pellet and permitting dispensing of said opening of a cooling system.

A stop leak package comprising stop leak material held together in pellet form by'an oil-insoluble watersolnble binder such as polyvinyl alcohol, a container, a soluble oil in said container, and at least one such pellet in? said oil, said package offering protection to said pellet and permitting dispensing of said pellet with, easeinto the opening of a radiator or like opening of a" cooling system.
