JEAN BAPTISTE MARTEL, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
MECHANICAL MOVEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,483, dated February 12, 1884. V Application filed November 13, 1883. (No model.) I
-T0 -aZZ whom it may concern:
'provements in Mechanical Movements, of-' which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mechanical movements whereby a powerful motion can be transmitted from a revolving shaft. The precise nature of my invention is pointed out in the following specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 represents a side View. an end view, partly in section.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A designates the main shaft, which has its bearings in a suit- Fig. 2 is able frame, 13, and to which a revolving motion is imparted by any suitable motor. On the shaft A is mounted a flywheel, O, and
upon the circumference of this fly-wheel rests a friction-pulley, D, which is mounted on a shaft, E, that has its hearings in arms F, which swing on a rod, G, mounted in the upper part of the frame B. The fricton-pulley is covered with leather, india-rubber, or other suitable material, and it is held in contact with the circumference of the fly-wheel O by a spring, H, which is hitched to the shaft E; or two springs may be used, one being hitched to each of the arms F. On the shaft Eisalso mounted a fly-wheel, Lthe weight of which serves to depress the friction-pulley D upon the circumference of the fly-wheel G. On the ends of the shaft E are mounted pulleys .J J,
from which a rapid motion can be transmitted to a line-shaft. WVhen the main shaft A is revolved by a crank, Q, or its equivalent, a very rapid motion is imparted to the shaft E, and since the friction-pulley D is held down upon the circumference of the fly-wheel C by the weight of the fly-wheel I, and by the spring or springs H, said friction-pulley is not liable to slip, and the motion transmitted from thepulleys J J is not only very rapid, but also powerful.
On the shaft A are mounted two drums, K L. The drum K bears upon a drum, K, which, in its turn, bears upon a drum, K so that both the drums K K are caused to revolve, and from the shafts on which these drums are mounted motion can be transmitted to line-shafts. The drums K K K? may, however, be geared together ,by cog-wheels. The drum L bears upon a drum, L, which, in its turn, bears upon a drum, L, and on the shaft of the drum L is secured a crank, Z, which connects by a spring, Z, with a crank, Z mounted on the end of the shaft of the drum L so that by the action of this spring these two drums are held in close contact with each other, and a powerful motion canbe transmitted from their shafts to one or more lineshafts. The drums L L L may, however, be geared together by suitable cog-wheels. The drum L is also geared together with a drum, M, 'which is geared together with a drum, N, and on the shaft of the drum M is mounted a circular saw, S, while on the shaft of the drum N is mounted a feed-wheel, W, so that my machine can be used for cutting up boards; but it isevident that it can be applied to a va riety of other uses; and it can be driven by hand, steam, water, or any other suitable power.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the shaft A, and with the fiy-wheel O, mounted on said shaft, of the friction-pulley D, the swinging arms F, the secondary fly-wheel I, and the spring or springs H, substantially as shown and described. V i
2. The combination, with the shaft A, the
flywheel O, the friction-pulley D, the swing- Witnesses:
