Description
E. L. SMITH.
MECHANISM FOR TRANSMITTING POWER.
Patented 00t. 18, 1881.
UNrTE STATES PATENT Erica,
EMMET L. SMITH, 0F JACKSON, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES W. HIGBY, OF SAME PLACE.
v MECHANISM FOR TRANSMITTING POWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,358, dated October 18, 1881.
Application filed August 25, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMMET L. SMITH, of the city and county ofJackson, and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Mechanism for Transmitting Power, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful iniprovementsin the construction and operation of mechanical devices by means of which power may be transmitted from the main line of shaflingtothemachinery to be driven without the intervention of belts; and the invention is designed as an improvementupon a patent fora similar purpose, issued to me July 12, 1881, and numbered 24 L152.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and operation of parts, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure l is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspe -tive,sl1owing inyimprovement.
as applied to running a sewing-machine.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, L is the drivingshaft, driven from the main shaft, (not shown,) or by the means and in the manner as described in the aforesaid Letters Patent.
A represents the sewing-machine, resting upon the table A, and B is the balance-wheel of the machine, as shown in the drawings.
0 is a friction-wheel, preferably covered with leather or its equivalent, and secured near the upper end of the shaft L, the extreme upper end (or near it) of which runs in the bearing D. This bearing is pivotally secured, as at b, to the table, in order to allow of the necessary movement of the shaft.
E is a spring, suitably secured to the table or to a standard, E, and F is a set-screw, by means of which the tension or pressure of the spring E is regulated. This spring E compels the friction-wheel 0 into contact with the face a of the balance-wheel B. By this arrangement cogged gearings, which wear very'rapidly when in rapid motion, are dispensed with.
What- I claim as my invention is 1. In combination with the wheel B, the pivoted bearing D, the friction-wheel (J, the shaft L, and mechanism, substantially as described, for operating the wheel 0 and shaft L, as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination, the shaft L, friction-wheel (J, pivoted bearing D, and spring E, for transmitting power to the balance-wheel B, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
EMMEI L. SMITH.
