COMBINED SPARK AERESTBR AN-D PLUE SUPPORTBR.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
JOSEPH O. RIDLEY, LOUIS, MISSOURI.
COMBINED "SPAHRKARRESTER AND FLUE-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,357, dated February 12, 1884.
Application filed September 8,1883. (No model.)
Toall whom it may concern..-
-Be it known that I, .IosEPH O. RIDLEY, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented acertain new and useful Improvement in a Combined Spark-Arrester and Flue-Supporter for Boilers, of which the fol especially intended for use on locomotive-boilers, whose office is to arrest the sparks and at the same time form a support to the flues at or near the center of the boiler.
My invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a boiler and B the flues thereof. The boiler is constructed as usual, but the flues are made in two sections each, their adjacent ends connecting with a box or chamber, 0, or, in otherwords, one set of flues connect the box with the front of the boiler and another set of flues boiler.
tending downward a suitable distance, discharging at a suitable point, such as the ashbox. It is preferably provided with a valve, J, operated by suitable means, by which it can be opened and closed at will.
As a means for operating the valve I have shown a bell-crank lever, L, pivoted to the front of the boiler, which has a rod, L, for operating it, andwhich is connected, by means of a rod, L to a crank, I, on the shaft of the valve. The inside of the box or chamber is provided with a deflector, O, at theend nearest the fire-box, and it is also preferably pro vided with a second deflector, 0 near the other end. The first deflector extends from the top downward a suitable distance, and acts to precipitate the sparks, cinders, &c., as they enter the chamber through the flues. The second deflector extends from near the bottom of the chamber upward a suitable distance, and acts as a stop to any sparks and cinders that may have a tendency to rise from the lower part of the chamber upward. It will thus be seen that my device acts both as a spark-arrester and a flue-supporter, preventing sparksfrom escaping through the smokestack and preventing the flues from sagging in the middle. as they are apt to do when not supported. The cinders, &c., are taken from the boxor chamber through means of the pipe I, which discharges them at a suitable point; or they may be taken therefrom by other suitable means.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a steam-boiler, the combination, with a chamber, divided flues connected thereto, and a discharge at the bottom of the chamber, of a deflector depending from the top of the chamber at the end nearest to the fire-box, to
pipe, as set forth. 7
2. Ina steam-boiler, the combination, with a chamber, flues connected thereby, and a discharge at the bottom of the chamber, of the deflector projecting upward from the bottom of the chamber to throw the solid matter back into the discharge-pipe, as set forth.
3. In a steam-boiler, the combination, with a chamber, fiues connected thereby, and a discharge at the bottom of the chamber, of the depending deflector at the end of the chamber nearest to the fire-box, and a deflector extending upwardly from the bottom of the chamher in advance of the discharge-pipaas set forth.
. JOSEPH G. RIDLEY.
In presence of- GEO. H. KNIGHT,
