SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent 1V0. 293,345, dated February 12,1884. Application filed June .2, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Lnwrs MILLER, of Akron, county of Summit, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Harvesting-Machines, of which the follow ing is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of thisspecification.
My invention relates to that class of grainbinding harvesters in which the grain is bound upon an inclined elevating-table arranged on the platform side of the driving-wheel; and it consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the curved angular bracket, through which the frame of the machine is connected with andsupported upon the drive-wheel axle; in a novel construction of the chairs supporting the elevated end of the inclined binderframe and table, and of bracing the platformframe through said binder-frame and chairs, and in certain details of construction and arrangement, hereinafter described. t
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view, taken from the front and stubble side of the machine, of so much of a harvesting-machine as is necessary to show my improvements. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the forward chair and tonguesocket, and Fig. 3 is'a similar view of the rear chair and gear-plate or bracket.
A and A represent the main transverse sills of the main and platform frame, to which the cutting apparatus, grain-wheel, and platform rake or carrier are applied in any usual or preferred manner. Upon the stubble ends of these sills, with its elevated side in close proximity with the driving-wheel, is secured the inclined binder-frame, composed of longitudinal tubular rods or bars 13 and B and suitable transverse bars, 0 C, rigidly connecting the tubularbars B and B, said frame supporting the inclined binder-table interposed between the platform and the driving-wheel. .The forward sill, A, has the angular axle bracket or sector DD secured to it by means of bolts or other suitable fastenings, for rigidly uniting its horizontal arm D to the lower face of said sill. This horizontal arm extends well under the sill and binder-frame, and is, by preference, made tapering to its end, as by such formation it is adapted to be firmly secured to of the machine.

Upon the drive-wheel end of the sill A is secured a chair, G, (shown detached in Fig. 2,) and provided in its upper end withaseat, g, for the forward end of the upper longitudinal bar, B, of the binder-frame, which may be secured therein in any suitable manner. A second chair, H, (shown detached in Fig. 3,) is secured to the rear sill, A, and serves to mary purpose of chairs G and H is to uphold the outer upper side of the inclined binderframe and table at the desired height; but to economize space and cost of construction, .and to avoid unnecessarily multiplying parts, the chair G is provided with a socket, g, in which the rear end of the pole or tongueF is secured by a pivot atf, permitting its vibration to accommodate the adjustment of the frame in height or the rocking of said frame on its driving and carrying wheels. It is also provided at g with a cylindrical shield, guard, or cover for a worm-wheel, k,- at g with a bearing for the shaft is of said wheel, and at with a sleeve-covering for a shaft, 70, having aworm or screw, 70 for actuating said worm-wheel and its shaft in effecting the adjustment of the main frame on the driving and carrying wheels.
The chair H, like the chair G, has a seat at h for the tubular framebar B, and is provided at h h with tubular bearings for the secondary or sprocket and bevel wheel shaft a, above referred to, and at h with a sleevebearing for the first longitudinal and main shaft of the bindermechanism, and from which motion is imparted to all the operative parts The chairs G and 11 have suitable feet or flanges, through which they IOG are bolted or otherwise firmly-secured to the the platform sills or frame, which are necessarily extended in length to accommodate and support the inclined binder-frame upon their inner ends. A brace, L, extends fromtheupper end of the chair G, or from the bar B, connected therewith, to the upper end of the arm D of the axle bracket or sector, for stiffening and preventing lateral swaying or vibration of the latter, and a second brace (indicated at L) may also be, employed, if desired, extending from the bracket H forwardto the arm D, for further stiffening and supporting the latter; and underneath the bevel-gears on the shaft a and the longitudinal shaft driven therefrom is secured a board or planlnM, which extends longitudinally between the bars or sills A and A. lhis board may be let into the lower faces of the sills or otherwise rigidly secured to said sills, so as to be flush on its lower face with the lower faces of said sills, and serves not only as a guard for the gearing referred to,
. but also, in connection with the binder-frame rigidly secured to the upper faces of the sills, to materially stiffen and strengthen the connection between said sills, which, aside from said parts, are connected in any usual or pre ferred manner. The sprocketwheel on shaft a for actuating the latter is actuated through an endless chain from a sprocket-wheel on the hub of the drive-wheel, (not shown,) and the curving of the standard D in the arc of a cir-- cle of which shaft a is the center serves to hold said shaft a and its sprocket-wheel always at the same distance from their driving-shaft or sprocket-wheel under any and all adjustments of the height of the frame,thereby maintaining a uniform tension of the driving-chain referred to.
In the class of machines described, where the weight of the binder-frame and mechanism is thrown upon the inwardly-extended platform-sills, as explained, it becomes important to stiffen and strengthen the latter as far as practicable by proper bracing, in order to avoid making the machine unnecessarily heavy and cumbrous, and this result is effect- I ually attained by the arrangement of the binder-frame and its supporting-chairs and the manner of bracing the axle-bracket and the platform-sills therefrom, hereinabove described.
Parts of the machine not particularly described may be constructed and arranged as described in other applications filed by me, or in any suitable or preferred manner.
Having now described my invention,what I claim as new is 1. The curved and angular drive-wheel axle-l racket connected by its horizontal arm with the forward platform-sill, in combination with a brace supporting its upper end and the axle block or sleeve adjustable on said bracket, substantially as described.

5. The chair G, forming a combined binderframe support and tongue-bracket, and provided with the shields or guards and bearings for the mechanism for adjusting the frame, substantially as described.
- 6. The combination, with the platform-sill, of the chair H, provided with a seat for the upper longitudinal bar of the inclined binderframe, and with bearings for the secondary or bevel-wheel shaft and counter-shaft, substantially as described.
7. The combination, with the platform sills binder-frame secured to said sills and chairs, the angular axle-bracket D, and the braces L and M, all substantially as described.
