SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 293,328, dated February 12, 1884.
V n Application filed February 17,1883. (No model.)
T1 @ZZ whom iv' may concern:
Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States,
have invented a certain new and useful Improvernent in Check-Valves, of which the folis an end view of the portion A.
The nature of the invention is disclosed by the following description: i
A represents the valve-casing, which is cylindrical in form. and has the screw-thread a upon its interior, about the opening a', and the screw-thread c2 about the opening ai. a
B is the shoulder, which is formed upon the end of the part A', and has the valve-seat b, ofresilient packing, like the Jenkins packing, which is held between the screw-binding and protecting-ring b and the shoulder b2 of the shoulder B. The shoulder B has upon its exterior .the screw-thread b3, which may be into the'thread a of the valve-casing A, and
the portion A also has the right or left screwthread b4, whereby the valve is fastened or secured to the steam-pipe.v By-1naking the thread a a left-hand thread and the thread b" a right-hand thread this portion of the valve may be used as a coupling-nut in uniting the remainder of the valve-casing to the connecting-pipe.
The valve C consists of a disk, c, having a projecting wall, lip, or extension, c which is narrower `than the packing seat b, and which is adapted to ,shut thereon, and it also has an arm, which extends into the recess a4, formed upon the side of the valve-casing A in casting, in which recess it is pivoted by means of the screw or pino, which extends across the recess from one side, as represented.
`The recess must be so arranged in relation to the valve-seat as to give the valve sufficient play to seat upon the packing. In order tol use this packing in the` seatit is essential that the shoulder be made as represented, and at- Be it known that I, CHARLES J ENKINs, of tached to the casing A, as shown, and the construction also enables the interior of the valvechamber to bev easily reached, and lessens the cost of manufacture.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. In a check-valve, the combination of the casing A, having the valve C hinged thereto, as described, with the removable section A', having the shoulder Bintegral therewith, and a valve-seat, b, of resilient or elastic packing, supported by said shoulder B, all substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination, in acheck-valve, of'
the section A', having the shoulder B, provided with the seat b, of Jenkins or other resilient packing, screwed to the shell or casing A, with the said casing A, having a recess, a4, formed in casting it, and a valve, C, having an arm, c2, extending into said recess, and fastened therein by a screw-pivot, c, all substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. In a check-valve, the combination ofthe valve-casing A, supporting the hinged valve C, and having the screw-thread` a', with the section A, having the resilient or elastic valveseat b, and the screw-,thread b3, all substantially as and for the purposes described.
4. In a check-valve, the combination of the casing A, bearing or supporting the hinged valve C, and having the screw-thread a, with the section A', having a resilient or elastic valve-seat b, the screw -thread b3, and the screw-thread b, all substantially as 4and for the purposes described. 5. In a check-valve, the combination of the casing A and the hinged valve C with the section A', having theshoulder B, supporting the resilient or elastic packing b, secured thereto CHARLES JENKINS.
