Description

(No Model.) l G. YW. BLOODGOOD.
`FASTENING'-ILAIIWAY RAILS METALLIC TIES. 4 v No. 293,302. Patented Feb. 12, 18874.
VIII/[M UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEs GEORGE W. BLOODGOOD, OF VYANDOTTE, MICHIGAN.
FASTENING RAILWAY-RA'ILS'TO METALLIC TIES.
SPECIFICATION 'forming the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accomi panying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to' certain new and useful improvements in fastenings for securing railway-rails to metallic ties, by means of which the rail is readily and easily secured tothe tie in such a manner that no strain is brought to bear upon the bolt which secures the clip in position.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the clip and its combination with the tie, as more fully hereinafter described.
Figurelis a plan view of the top of an iron tie, broken in two to show the sectional form thereof. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my improvedclip. Fig. 3 is a section showing the completed fastening.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication, Arepresents a metallic railway-tie, in the top of which, at suitable distances apart, are the longitudinal slots ce, with the enlargements b. These slots are in pairs, one pair for each rail. and theenlargements in said slots are at the end thereof farthest away from the position of the rail which is shown at G..
D is a clip or plate, one end Vof which isclips is secured to the' top of a tie andin engagement with the foot of the rail by drop- In operation, one of these part of Letters Patent No. 293,302, dated February 12, 1884.

ping the'head-bolt t-hrough the enlargement, (the bolt having been previously inserted through the clip and the nut placed thereon.)
The nuts are then tightened, simply to hold the Y clip in place. Then the clip for the other side of the rail is secured by droppingits bolt 4through the enlargement and moving it for- Ward toward the rail in the slot until the stop drops into the enlargement and the opposite end embraces the foot of the rail, when the nut is `screwed to place. By this construction of fastening the rail may be easily secured in place and as easily removed for repairs, and While the clips are held in position with relation to the rail and the tie by the bolts all the lateral strain of the rail in use will be brought upon the stops on the lower side of the clips resting against the end of theenlargements y I am aware t-hat there are a number of patents in existence upon means of fastening rails to metallic ties; but I am not aware of any such invention wherein the strain upon the bolt against lateral pressure is prevented by a stop upon the lower side of the clip engaging with the enlargementof the slot through which the bolt-head is passed in securing the clip to the tie.
I am aware of Patent No. 247,248, and make no claim tothe construction shown therein, as
I deem my invention essentially different thercfrom.
What I claim as my invention is- The combination of the tie A, having longitudinal slot a, provided with the enlargement enonon W. BLooDGooD.r
