Hororr Kiss, a citizen of the United States. residing at Alpena, in the county of Jerauld and State of South Dakota,-haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail- Fasteners, of which the following is a speci fication, reference being had to the ac companying drawings. p
This invention relates to an improved rail fastener and has for its primary object to provide a very simjqle and effective device to prevent the spree" ing of the rails and also obviate rotting or decaying of the tie beneath the rail.
It is anadditional object of the invention to provide a device for the above purpose embodying chair plates adapted to be inserted from opposite sides of the tie beneath the rail, and adjustable clamping means mounted upon each of the chair plates for engagement with one edge of the rail base. 1
' It is an additional object of the invention to provide improved means for securely spiking the chair plates to the tie to prevent their movement with respect to each other or with relation to the tie.
\Vith the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination, and arrangem'ent'of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,

Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 designates the tie plates, each of which includes an elongated body portion 6 having a relatively narrow lateral extension 7 upon one end. The tie plate at the juncture of the. extension with the'body 6 is formed with a vertical flange 8 which projects beyond the opposite ends of the body portion 6 of the tie plate and is adapted for engagement against one side of the tie, indicated at T..
Upon one/of the longitudinal edges of the lateral extension 7 on each tie plate, an upwardly and inwardly extending clamping lug 9 is formed. Adjacent to this lug,,the under. side of the extension 7 is formed with an enlargement 10, having an opening 11 therethrough d sposed transversely of the extension 7 on the tie plate.
In the tie plates in position upon one no, the same are disposed with their body portions 6 in superposed relat1on upon the upper surface of the tie and the vertical flanges 8 engaged closelyagainst the opposite side faces of the tie. Coinciding sp ke receiving openings are formed in the ends of the body portions 6 'of the tie plates to receive thespikes 12, driven into the tie. Similar spikes 13 are also driven horizontally into the body of the tie through openings intheends of the flanges 8. These s ikes, as clearly shown in detail in Fig. 5 are each provided with a rectangular enlargement '14 on one side of its shank portion beneath the heaclfof the spike, and enlargement-being beveled tapered at its lower-end and nierginginto the side face of the shank, as at 15.. These shank ments en age through the openings in the body portion 6 and the flanges 8 of the tie plates and also enter the tie whereby turning movement of the spikes is effectually prevented, and the tie plates are also securely fixed in place against relative movement.
It will be observed that the clamping tongues are 'formedupon the relatively opposite longitudinal edges of the extensions 7 of the respectiveti'e plates. Adjacent to the opposite edge of each of these extensions and upon theund'er side thereof, a guide strip or loo '16 is formed to receive fiat rectangular clamping plate- 17. The, outer end of each of the clamping plates is up wardly and evenlycurved to form the clamp ing tongues 18 which are opposed to the tongues 9 and are adapted for clamping en'- ga-gement over the opposite edge of the rail base. The clamping plates 17 are each formed upon one end of a bolt 19 which is movable through'the opening 11 provided in the enlargement 10 formed upon the extension 7 of the tieplate, which extends lon gitudina ll'y beneath the base of the rail, The outer end of each of these bolts is threaded to receive one'or more clamping nuts 20.

From the above description it will be seen.

By means of the'device, it will be apparent that the rail can be easily, quickly and securely fastened in place upon the tie or readily removed therefrom, when necessa ry.-

While I have shown and .described the preferred construction a-nd arrangement of the several features, it is to be understood that the device is susceptible of considerable modification thereof and I therefore reserve the privilege of adopting all such legiti-- mate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention,
