I My invention relates to bottle-stopping de vices in which a rubber plug is compressed over and within the mouth of a bottleby means of a combined stopper cap and bail adapted to be connected at one end, by means of a link and a hinged lever, to a band secured to the neck of said bottle, and to the other end by means of a link pivoted to the coiled or looped portion of said band, andis an improvement upon the construction of the stopper, cap, and rubber plug shown in my Patent No. 27 2, 081, of 13th February, 1883; and the objects of my improvements are, first, to provide the stopperwith a cap that can be struck out of sheet metal, and have its rim rest uniformly upon the stopper-plug when locked thereon while the bottle is closed; and, second, to give such a form to the cavity within the plug as to cause it to expand laterallywithin the bottle-mouth when the bottom of said cavity is subjected to vertical pressure, and also cause the stopper to jump clear over and to one side of the bottle, and thereby release the stopper-plug of all compression and allow it to resume its primitive form while the bottle is .open. To connect the plug with the stopperfastenings and furnish it with a support having some degree of elasticity to press against the floor of the center cavity, the cap D is used. This cap is stamped out of sheet metal, and is circular, with two lugs, d, projecting diametrically from the periphery thereof, and out of the center is cut a disk,-d, having an arm, (1*, that connects it permanently with the body of the cap. After the caps blank has been stamped or cut out of a flat sheet of metal, the arm (1 is bent downwardly at the point where it is united to the cap, and horizontally again at the point where it joins the disk (1, so that said disk will occupy a position parallel with the bottom surface of the cap, and about three sixteenths of an inch therefrom. The disk (1 and arm (1 are thus-in position, after having been inserted within the plug B, to press against the floor of the cavity 1), upon a central elevation, b, projecting from its interior surface, to partly distend it downwardly and laterally when forcing the plug within the bottle-mouth. \Vhile releasing the bottle of its fastening's this downward distention of the bottom of the rubber plug has, by its resilience, a tendency to throw the cap D upward, and the latter carries the plug in its flight clear off the bottle-mouth. Vith this obj ectin view the thickness of i the upper portion, b", of the plug covering its cavity is only about one eighth of an inch, and consequently less than the length of the arm (1 carrying the disk d of the cap-plate. The rubber plug B, having the central elevation, b projecting from thefloor of its cavity, can be used in connection with a cast-metal cap, D, having a central stem and button, d, and substantially the same results be obtained, as said button will press upon the elevation b of the rubber plug and diffuse or spread, it downwardly andlaterally against the interior of the neck of the bottle in the act of closing it.
Having now fully described my invention, I c1ain1- 1. A bottle-stopper cap consisting of asheetmetal plate having two peripheral'lugs, a disk, and anarm carrying said disk, stamped from said plate, substantially as and for the purpose'described. v
2. The combination of a bottle-stopper cap with a rubber plug having a central cavity, the floor of which cavity has a central projection resting against the end of the device forming a part of the stopper-cap, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination of a bottle-stopper cap with a rubber plug having a central cavity and an opening, (1, in' the top surface of said plug, leading into the side of said cavity, or eccentrically to said top, substantially as de scribed.
