PLow.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,252, dated February 12, 1884.
Application filed June 30, 1883. No model.)
exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to plows and cultivators, and it has for its object to produce a device which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, .durability,'and general To this end it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which .will be'hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure lis a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a rear view. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken through one of the beams and standards, and Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of one of the standards and one of the braces.
. The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, A A designate a pair of beams,thefront ends of which are formed with hooks B, for the attachment, in any suitable manner, of the draft. The rear ends of the beams are forked, as at G, to receive the stand ards D,which are secured in the said forks by means of transverse bolts E.
.To the outer sides of the beams A, some distance in front of the standards, are pivoted bars F, the lower ends of which are provided with laterally-projecting spindles G, upon which the wheels or rollers H are journaled. The lower ends of the barsFare provided with segmental upwardly and forwardly projecting braces I, the upper ends of which have slots J, sliding over bolts K, arranged transversely in the front ends of the beams, and equipped with thumb-nuts L, which may be tightened so as to retain the segmental braces I securely in any position to which they may be adjust ed. It will be seen that by this mechanism the wheels or rollers H may be raised or lowcred, as may be desired, for the purpose 0 gaging the draft.
The standards D are constructed of suitablyshaped plates, which are bent or doubled so as to form a pair of wings, M and N,which are united by the curved front edge, 0. The upper edges of the wings M and N are brought together so as to form a flange, P, and shoul ders Q, said flange fitting between and said shoulders against the under sides of the prongs of the forks at the rear ends of the beams. The mold-boards R and shares S are suitably bolted to the outer wings, M, of the standards. To the inner wings, N, the landsides T are connectedby'means of plates T substantially as shown in the drawings. This construction is, as will be seen, very simple, and by it greatstrength and durability are attained.
U U are upright bars secured to the rear ends of the beams, fromwhichthey maybe extended downwardly, so as to be also secured to the outer sides or wings of the standards, as shown in the drawings. The handles V V, which are secured to the beams near the front ends of. the latter, are connected to the said uprights by means of clips WV, which may be raised or lowered, so as to secure the handles at any desired height. The handles and uprights are also by this construction mutually braced. The uprights UU are provided near their upper and lower ends with staples X, to receive the connecting-braces which have been shown in detail in Fig. 5 of the drawings. The said braces consist eachof a clamp,Y, attached to the staple of one of the uprights, and having an outturned lip or wing, Z, provided with an opening, A, to receive the brace-rod 13 which is attached to the corre sponding staple of the other upright. Said brace-rod is provided with perforations 0 through anyone of which may be passed a,
The operation of my invention will be read;
ily understood from theforcgoing description taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. It is simple, convenient, easily manipulated, and may be constructed at a small expense.
I claim as inyinvention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The combination of the beam, having the bifurcated rear end, with the standard, formed of asingle plate, bent or doubled so as to form a pair of Wings, connected by the curved front edge, and having their upper edges brought together so as to form a flange, fitted in the bifurcated rear end of the beam, and shoulders abutting against the under side of the latter, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the beams A A, having bifurcated rear ends, vertically-adjustable Wheels or casters at the front ends of said beams, uprights U at the rear ends of said beams, handles V, secured to said beams and
