ATENI LEWVIS HERRICK, OF NEWV HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
DRILLING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,246, dated February 12,1884.
Application filed May 1], 1893. (No model.)
To all whom zit-may concern:
Be it known that I, LEwIs HERRIOK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drill- Presses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of drill-presses in which both manual and pedal power may be used to elevate the work-supporting table.
The object of my invention is to provide means for steadying andassisting the motion of the foot in elevating the \vorksupporting table of a drill-press.
My .invention consists in the hereinafterdescribed means for attaining said objects.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improvement; Fig. 2, a sec tional view (looking downward) on line a: m of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a detail view of the curved lever, and Fig. 4 a detail View of the pedal-le ver.
Similar letters of reference indicate corrc: sponding partsthroughout the different views. A is the base of the press, from which rises the vertical post B, and to the top of the latter the frame C. is secured. Said frame C bears the driving mechanism D of the d'rilltions, and are provided with set-screws to enable the rod to be extended or contracted and fixed in position at a greater or less distance from the drill. In order to retain said table within the desired bounds, Iprovide the gage I, secured at one end to said table, and provided with nuts 2' 7: above and below said frame, whereby the play of the table is re stricted within the desired bounds. By regulating these nuts it will be seen that the vertical movement of said work-bearing table is other, and this long arm is provided'on the outside, near its extremity, with a pin, It", for the purpose hereinafter set forth. The lever K is provided with transverse orifices atthe end of the short arm and about midway of the long arm, and a pivot-pin passes through 7 said orifices and like orifices formed in ears extending upward from base A, thus pivoting said lever upon said base. Immediately above the pivotal point of the long arm said lever K is provided with an upright arm, to which is bolted a hand-lever, L. I11 the rear of le ver K a perforated lug extends upward from the base A, and to this lug is pivoted the footlever M. Said lever or treadle, opposite the end of the long arm It, is provided with alongitudinal slot, m, in which works the aforesaid pin 70 of the lever K. It is furthermore provided upon its free extremity with a footrest, at.
The operation of my invention is as follows:
The table H is adjustedto any desired height by means of the bolts fand the rod G. The article to be operated uponis then placed upon the table and the drill set in motion. The nutsz' z" are then adjusted to regulate the depth of the out. As the drill cuts, the table is ele vated by pressing the foot upon the pedal M and pressing backward the lever L, whereby the curved portion of the lever K is elevated and the rod G and table H raised.
In cases where the table is stationary and thedrill-stock spindle moves up and down, it is obvious that the rod G may be disconnected from the table and connected with the spindle, so as to actuate the latter.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a drill-press, the curved lever K, connected at the middle of its curvature with the table-bearing rod, fulcrumed as. described, and provided with a long arm, k, and an upright arm, k said long arm connected wit-h a treadle, and said upright arm adapted to carry' 2 seams 2. The combination, with the curved lever and set-screws, and the screw I, provided with IO K, having along arm, k, providedwith a pin, nuts, as described, whereby said table may be h of the pedal-lever M, pivoted inrear of adjusted, for thepurposes set forth. said curved lever, and provided with a longi- In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in 5 tudinal slot, m, adapted to fit over the aforepresence of two Witnesses.
said pin, as and for the purposes described. LEWIS HERRIGK.
