(Cl. 155-22 toimprovements in combined serving tables for invalids, and more particularly to an improved portable lightweight device of this kind which is collapsible into a small bulk.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a practical, convenient, elfieient,,and easily collapsed and set up device of the character indicated, which can be readily taken along when a'patient is moved, as when a patient is transported in a vehicle between home and a treatment center. V
I Another object of the invention is to provide a simple and sturdydevice of the character indicated above which can be inexpensively made in a rugged and serviceable form, having the attractive appearance of a piece of furniture, from readily available materials, such as plywood, and readily available metal components, such' as hinges, bolts, and catches.- v A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character indicated above wherein certain of its components can be vertically adjusted to accommodate patients of diiferent heights, particularly children who grow taller during possession of the device.
Other important objects and advantageous features of the invention will be apparent from the following description -and, ,the accompanying drawings, wherein, for purposes of illustrationonly, a specific form of the invention is set forth in detail.

Referring in detail to the morals designate like parts This invention relates walkers and stand-up drawings, wherein like nuthroughout the several views, the illustrated device of the invention comprises a foldably collapsible body 10, a removable tray top 12, a removable and adjustable shelf 14, and aremovable col- IapsibIe-wheeled base 16.

The facing sides of the front and side panels have therein vertically spaced sets of horizontally aligned upper dadoes 26-forslidably receiving related edges of the shelf 14, which can be set into diife'rent sets of dadoes to achieve the desired height of the shelf and the rear panel 24 has dadoes 27 for receiving the rear edge of the shelf. The side panel 20 and the left-hand end of the short. front panel 22 are hinged together by means of vertical spaced, double-acting hinges 30 which are inset in the rear sides of the front panel and in front edge ofv the side panel 20. The rear panel 24 and the side panel 18 are hinged together at the rear end of the side panel 18 by vertically spaced hinges 32 which, have their leaves, as indicated at 34 and 36, in Figure 3, secured to the outer sides of these panels, the right-hand end of the rear panel 24 being arranged to abut the inner side of the side panel 18 in the unfolded or set up condition of the device. The rear panel 24 is hinged to the side panel 20 by vertically spaced hinges 38, whose leaves 40 are secured to the outer side of the side panel 20, and whose leaves 42 are secured to the outer sides of the blocks 44, the blocks the rear panel 24 and the space between the rear side of the rear panel 24 and the rear edge 46 of the wide side panel 20 which reaches rearwardly beyond the rear panel, as shown in Figure 3, to a distance equal to the thickness of the side panel 18. V V v v The right hand end of the short front panel 22 is not hinged at its meeting with the front edge of the narrow side panel 18, but is s'ecurable thereto by means of such 'as door latches 48 secured on the rearside of the front panel and having latch bolts 50 which extend into sockets 52 provided in the inward side of the's'ide panel 18. It is obvious that with the latch bolts 50 withdrawn from the sockets 52, the narrow side panel18 can, as shown in Figures 7 and 8, be folded rearwardly against the back of the panel 24, the wide side panel 20 folded rearwardly against the side panel 18, and the front panel folded against the outer side of the side panel 20. The resultant compact bulk or package is no wider than the front and rear panels 22 and 24 and no thicker than the combined thickness of the four panels 18, 20, 22 and 24, and the panels are registered and their boundaries coincide. N f The base 16 of the invention comprises a horizontal rectangular panel 54 which is relatively thick and heavy as compared to the body panels, and is dimensioned so that its end edges 56 fit slidably in horizontal grooves 57 in the inner sides of the side panels 18 and 20, at a locaf ti'oh spaced below the dadoes 26, a slot 58 near itsrear edge which receives the lower end of the rear panel 24, and a front edge 62 which is flush with the front edges of the side panels when the base panel 54 is in place. As shown in Figure 8, the short arms 70 are pivoted wardly beyond the rear edge'58 'of the base panel 54 and have fixed on their undersides spacer blocks 78 having thereon depending casters 80 which have suitable locking means, not shown, enabling the caster wheels to be locked to preclude rolling of the device out of a desired position on a floor. In the laterally outward edges of the short arms 70 are angled notches 82 which are located to' engage with clamping bolts 84 which are located in the corners of the base panel 24 near its rear edge 58 and which depend fromthe base panel and carry wing nuts .86 for clampably engaging the short arms 70 and holding them engaged with the bolts 84 in an unfolded divergent relation, as .shown in Figure 5.
.The. long arms 72 are pivoted like the short arms 70 on bolts 88 depending from the base panel 54 at locations near the front edge 62 thereof and longitudinally outwardly from the short arm bolts 76. The long arms 72 have blocks 78 and casters 80 on their outer ends, and angled notches 90 in their laterally inward sides near their inner ends to engage with clamping bolts 92 depending from the base panel and centrally located thereon between the clamping bolts 84 and the front edge 62 of the base panel, the bolts 92 being equipped with wing nuts 94 for clamping the long arms 72 in the unfolded divergent relation to be seen in Figure 5. As shown in Figure 8, when the base 16 is removed from the body 10, the base panel 54 is to be laid upon the rear body panel 24, with the arms 70 unfolded into side by side relation, and the long arms 72 folded inwardly onto the base panel as far as the short arm clamping bolts 84 will permit.
The short front panel 22 has its upper edge 94 on a level with the upper edges of the body panels, and in this upper edge is provided a relatively wide and deep notch or cut-out 96 which affords access to the interior of the body 10. Covering the cut-out 96 and bearing against the front side of the front panel 22 and normally reaching thereabove, is a vertically adjustable head and back rest panel 98, which can be padded, which is vertically elongated and rectangular and is provided with a vertical central closed end slot 100 through which extends a bolt 102 fixed on the front panel 22 immediately below the cut-out 96. The bolt 102 is provided with a wing nut 104 which is arranged to be tightened against a metal bar 105 through which the bolt extends, and which bears upon the front side of the panel 98 at opposite sides of the slot 100, for holding the panel 98 in desired vertically adjusted positions, to accommodate patients of different heights. As shown in Figures 1 and 3, the rest panel 98 is maintained in erect position by guide strips 106 fixed on the front panel 22 and slidably engaged by vertical grooves 108 provided in the rear or inner side of the rest panel 98.
- The removable tray table top 12, as shown in Figure 9, comprises a rectangular panel 110, larger in area than the body and having rear and side edges, to which are secured tray walls 116 and 118 respectively, which rise above the panel 110 and form protective tray sides. The front edge 120 of the panel 110 is devoid of a tray side and is indented by a centralized cut-out 122 of the approximate width of the body 10 and of a depth about half of the depth of the body 10, which provides access to the interior of the body 10, and to a receptacle (not shown) which can rest upon the shelf 14.
The tray table top 12 is removably mounted on the upper end of the body 10, with the underside of the panel 110 resting upon the upper edges of the body panels. The tray table top is removably secured in place by latches 124 which have retractable bolts 126 which engage in sockets128 provided in the outer sides of the body side panels 18 and 20 at points midway between their rear and forward edges and near their upper ends. The latches 124 are mounted through wide or deep cleats 130 which are secured to the underside of and extend front to rear of the tray panel in locations to engage the outer sides of the side panels 18 and 20, as shown in Figure 4. Narrower or shallower cleats 132. are secured to the underside of the panel 110 and spaced parallel inwardly from the cleats 13 0 toengage the inner sides of the body side panels 18 and 20, and other such cleats 134 brace the deep cleats at the outer sides thereof. Back cleats 136 are provided on the panel 110 to engage the rear side of the rear panel 24.
It will be obvious from the foregoing that a patient, such as a paraplegic child can, by grasping sides of the table top 12, find support for walking by rolling the device on its casters, and that such child can while standing, make use of a receptacle on the shelf 14, and at the same time findsupport for its head and/or shoulders on the rest panel'98, while eating with the hands from food placed upon the'table top 12, and that the cut-out in the table top can be used to deposit material from the table top or expelled by the child into the receptacle on the shelf 14.
Although there has been shown and described herein a preferred form of the invention. it is to be understood that the invention is not necesarily confined thereto, and that any change or changes in the structure of and in the relative arrangements 'of components thereof are contemplated as being within the scope of the invention as defined by the claims appended hereto.
What is claimed is:
1. A portable and collapsible stand-up table comprising a body composed of side panels, a front panel, and a rear panel, the side panels and the rear panel being hinged together and the front panel being hinged at one side edge to a side panel and unhinged at its other side edge to the other side panel, latch means separably-connecting the front panel at said other edge to said other side panel, a removable table top supported on the upper ends of the body panels, and a vertical head and shoulder rest panel mounted on said front panel and vertically adjustable relative to said front panel.
2. A portable and collapsible stand-up table comprising a body composed of side panels, a front panel, and a rear panel, the side panels and the rear panel being hinged together and the front panel being hinged at one side edge to a side panel and unhinged at its other side edge to the other side panel, latch means separably connecting the front panel at said other edge to said other side panel, a removable table top supported on the upper ends of the body panels, a wheeled base removably engaged with the lower end of the body, and a vertical head and shoulder rest panel mounted on said front panel and vertically adjustable relative to said front panel.
3. A portable and collapsible stand-up table comprising a body composed of side panels, a front panel, and a rear panel, the side panels and the rear panel being hinged together and the front panel being hinged at one side edge to a side panel and unhinged at its other side edge to the other side panel, latch means separably connecting the front panel at said other edge to said other side panel, a removable table top supported on the upper ends of the body panels, and a wheeled base removably engaged with the lower end of the body, and a removable and vertically adjustable shelf within said body and supported on the side panels and the rear panel, said front panel having a lower end spaced above said shelf and an upper edge on a level with body panels, a cut-out formed in the upper edge of the front panel providing access to the interior of the body above said shelf, and a vertical head and shoulder rest panel mounted on said from. panel and covering said cut-out and having an upper end extending above the table top, and means for vertically adjusting said rest panel relative to the front panel.
4. A portable and collapsible stand-up table comprising a body composed of side panels, a front panel, and a rear panel, the side panels and the rear panel being hinged together and the front panel being hinged at one side edge to a side panel and unhinged at its other side edge to the other side panel, latch means separably connecting the front panel at said other edge to said other side panel, a removable table top supported on the upper ends of the body panels, and a wheeled base removably engaged with the lower end of the body, and a removable and vertically adjustable shelf within said body and supported on the side panels and the rear panel, said front panel having a lower end spaced above said shelf and an upper edge on a level with body panels, a cut-out formed in the upper edge of the front panel providing access to the interior of the body above said shelf, and a vertical head and shoulder rest panel mounted on said front panel and covering said cut-out and having an upper end extending above the table top, and means for vertically adjusting said rest panel relative to the front panel, said table top having a horizontal panel having a front edge reaching to said front panel, the front edge of the table top panel being indented with a cut-out registered with and wider than the front panel cut-out and providing access through the table top to the interior of the body above said tray, and latch bolt means on the table top engaging panels and securing the table top in place.
5. A portable and collapsible stand up table comprising a body composed of side panels, a front panel, and a rear panel, the side panels and the rear panelbeing hinged together and the front panel being hinged at one side edge of a side panel and unhinged at its other side edge to the other side panel, latch means separably connecting the front panel at said other edge to said other side panel, a removable table top supported on the upper ends of the body panels, and a wheeled base removably engaged with the lower end of the body, said base comprising a horizontal base panel, means on the inner sides of the side panels holding the base plate, a slot in the base plate receiving the lower end of the rear body panel, and bolts on end edges of the base panel traversing the side panels, and foldable horizontal arms severally pivoted on the underside of the base plate and having caster-equipped outer ends reaching beyond corners of said body, and
manual means for releasably clamping the arms in divergent relation to each other, said manual means being releasable to enable folding the arms onto the underside of the base plate.
6. A portable and collapsible stand-up table comprising a body composed of side panels, a front panel, and a rear panel, the side panels and the rear panel being hinged together and the front panel being hinged at one side edge to a side panel and unhinged at its other side edge to the other side panel, latch means separably connecting the front panel at said other edge to said other side panel, removable tabletop supported on the upper ends of the body panels, and a wheeled base removably engaged with the lower end of the body, and a removable and vertically adjustable shelf within said body and supported on the side panels and the rear panel, said front panel having a lower end spaced above said shelf and an upper edge on a level with body panels, a cut-out formed in the upper edge of the front panel providing access to the interior of the body above said shelf, and a vertical head and shoulder rest panel mounted on said front panel and covering said cut-out and having an upper end extending above the table top, and means for vertically adjusting said rest panel relative to the front panel, said table top having a horizontal panel having a front edge reaching to said front panel, the front edge of the table top panel being indented with a cut-out registered with and wider than the front panel cut-out and providing access through the table top to the interior of the body above said tray, and latch bolt means on the table top engaging panels and securing the table top in place, and cleat means on the underside. of the table top panel including inner cleats engaging the inner sides of the side panels and outer cleats engaging the outer sides of the side panels, said latch bolts being mounted on the outer cleats.
