ST RAW-C UTTE R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,150, dated February 5, 1884,
i Application filed January 20, 1883. (No modclJ Be it known thatI, DANIEL M. CUMMINGS,
of Entield, Grafton county, New Hampshire,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Oomminuting Straw, of which thefollowing is a specification.
This invention is a machine for comminuting straw and other materials and it consists in such a combination, of parts, hereinafter fully described, as will secure a better feeding of the material and its more thorough division into fragments.
Inthe drawings, Figure 1 is a Sectional elevation of my improved machine. plan View of a feed-roll. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the feed devices. Fig. 4 is a detached view of one section of the cutter. Fig. 5 is a side view of the cutter detached from the frame.
, adjusted that the edges of the saws or knives will shear against the edge of the cutter-blade;
At the rear of the blade E turns a feed-roll, G, above which is a frame, J, swinging freely upon extensions of the shaft a, andcarrying two rolls, H L. the shafts of which are connected by a chain belt, t, so that the rolls will turn together. The roll H is driven by bevelgears u from a shaft, N, turning in bearings on the frame J, and carrying a worm-wheel, s, that engages with a worm, g, upon the shaft a. By this arrangement the shaft N is driven, whatever may be the angle assumed by the frame J. The roll H has a surface made of ribs in sections, arranged spirally at an angle to form zigzag flutes, as shown in Fig. 2, which insures. a better hold upon the straw or other material to be comminuted and a better feeding effect. The roll L is a binding roll, which holds the material down upon the cutting effect. A chute, 1, arranged below the cutter D and roll G, serves to conduct the particles of material detached bythe cutten eylinderD into the space between two grinding rolls or cylinders R It, rotating in the direction of the arrows, the cylinder R, however, turning, bymeans of the gears shown, at about ten times the speed of the cylinder B. These cylinders are made of stone or metal, or are coated with any suitable facing material, ac cording to the character of the work to be done, and serve to break up or pulverize the chips or slivers formed by the action of the cutting-cylinder D, thereby reducing the material to a fine powder or breaking it up into extremely small particles. i
It will-be apparent that the various shafts may be driven from a main shaft, h, which supports the roller R, or in any other suitable manner. The material to be ground may be carried to the feed-rolls through a chute or spout, or may be deposited upon a flat table or platform, S. a
While any suitable form of cutters may be "employed, the cutter I use is a fiat spiral blade mounted upon a shaft, and provided I do not claim a cutter composed of a series of separate disks secured to a shaft, as described inpatent to Cummings and Frary, June 13, 1882, No. 259,503, nor,broadly,a spiral cutter, substantially as shown in the patent to S. M. Batty, February 20, 1883, No. 272,403. 0
I claiml. The combination, ina cutting-machine, of a revolving cutter, D, and stationary blade E, a frame swinging on the cutter-shaft, a feedroll carried at the outer end of said frame and driven from said shaft, and a pressureroll carried by said frame at a point above the blade E, all as setforth.
2. 'The combination of the cutter cylinder and shaft, the frame J, hung to the shaft and carrying the rollers L H, and shaft N, gearing with one of the rollers, and worm-gear for driving the shaft N from the shaft a, substantially as set forth.
3. In a straw-cutter, the combination, with the stationary cutter-blade E, of'the cutter D, consisting of a shaft having a spiral flat blade 4. The combination of the cutting-cylinder D, cutter-blade E, rollers H L, supported in frame J, as set forth, and the grinding-rolls R R, gea1'ed to rotate at different speeds,'sub- 1o stantially as and for thepurpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
DANIEL M. CUMMINGS.
