BOOT AND SHOE FASTENING. 'N0.Z93,145.- Patented Feb. 5, 1884"" N. PETER$ PhomLmmmphur. wumn wi m.
UNITED STATES FRANK. CHASE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOOT AND SHOE FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,145, dated February 5, 1884.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK. OHAsE, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boot and Shoe Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, simple, convenient, and expeditious fastening for lasting boots and'shoes, or connecting the upper with the inner sole,
preparatory to receiving the sole proper, se-
cured thereon in any suitable manner; and it consists in the construction of the fastening by means of holes cut through the turnedunder edges of the upper and the inner sole, leaving a core and passing a cord or thread over such holes then driving the cores back into the holes from which they were cut; carrying the cord or thread down into the holes beneath the ends of the cores, and leaving it connected or continuous between the holes from which it extends at each side of the core, in the line of the series of fastenings, as hereinafter more fully described, and set forth in the claim.
Figure 1 represents a plan of the bottom of a shoe having the upper and the inner sole secured or connected together or lasted in the manner embracing my invention. Fig. 2 represents a verticalsection through the inner sole and upper, showing my invention.
A represents the inner sole, applied and secured upon thebottom of a last as usual; and B shows the turned-under edges of the upper, as heretofore, the said upperbeing secured in position upon the inner sole bypunching holes through the upper and through the inner sole, by means of a hollow punch, so as to remove Application filed September 17, 1883. (No model.)
from said upper and sole a core, E, which is retained within the said punch, and a cord or thread, L, passed over said hole, and then said core E is forced or driven from the punch.- Vdownward upon the said cord or thread, (drawn over such hole,) and within said hole beneath the bottom of said core E, as it is driven back into the hole from which it was removed by the hollow punch, thus repeating the said operation, forming a series ofholes and fastpoint of connection, and that said thread or.
cord continues or extends from hole to hole around all portions of thesaid sole.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is That improvement in uniting the uppers and soles ofboots and shoes consisting in forming holes in the parts to be united, by punching out or removing portions of the same,
then passing a cord or thread over such holes,
then forcing the removed portions or cores back into the holes, carrying with them the overlaidcord or thread, thus forming a continuous line of fastening, substantially as set forth.
