Be it known that 1, Hnnvnr S. llloxsox, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of'. New Haven, county of New Haven andState of Connecticut, have .invented eertain newand useful Improvements in Boxes, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.

In said drawings, Figure 1 illustrates the blank from which the box is made. Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views, illustrating two steps in the manipulation of said blank in the opera-tion of setting it up or forming the box. Fig. 8 shows the box in condition to be filled with its contents. Fig. 4 illustrates the box in its closed condition.

The improvements effected by this inventionrelate to that class of boxes, preferably made of paper or similar material, in which the box proper and its cover are permanentlyunited by a hinge-like joint, enabling the cover to be opened and closed without affecting the box-body, and which cover and box in the form of a flat blank may be conveniently shipped or stored, and yet be readily set up in box form and secured for use through locks provided by the material composing the box.

The invention consists ina box the body and cover of which are formed in a single piece or blank, fashioned, creased, or scored, so as to enable it to` be laid flat for shipment or storage, orto be set up into hollow form for use, and retained in such form by lockingtongnes, and also provide the box with a double bottom, the flaps of which are locked into place, and thus prevented from protruding upward into the interior of the-.box, all of which will be more 11 articularly hereinafter explained and claimed.

In carrying out this invention a blank of general rectangular form is cut, scored, or creased and incised, as in Fig. 1, thus providing a box consisting of a bottom, A, bottom flaps, B C, a front, D, a back, E, side flaps, F G and H I, end-closing flaps ISL L, and a cover consisting of a top, J, and tucking-fiap M. The scoring or creasing to provide weakened folding-j oints is made on the lines 5 6 to enable the bottom flaps, B C, to fold inwardly over the bottom A; on the lines 7 8 to ena-blethe front D and bottom; on the lines 9 10 and 11 12 to enable the side fiaps, G I and F H, to bend inwardly at right angles to the said front and back: on the lines 13 11i to enable the closing-flaps K L to be folded over the box end, and on lines 15 16 to enable the cover J to be folded over the box end, and its iiap M to be entered into the box end. It is incised on the lines 21 22 and 17 18 to free the bottom flaps, B C, fromthe side naps F H and bottom A, and on lines 19 V20 to free the end closing-fiaps K L from the cover-top-J. Thus prepared ,the blank is capableof being brought into box form by the following manipulation: The sides GI are bent upward at right angles to the front D, as in Fig. 2, andthe bot-` tom flaps, C B, are folded inward so as to stand at right angles to said sides G I. rIhe sides F H are then similarly bent at right angles to the back E, carrying with them the top flaps, K L, in likel arrangement with respect to the top J. These parts are then carried bodily upward, so that the bottom A, bending upon the line 7', lies snugly against the bottom flaps, C B, while the back E bends upon the line 8 as the sides F and H are entered within the sides G I. Vhen these sides F II lie within the sides G I, the tongues 2 1 are entered into thepockets 4 3, thus looking all the sides together, as in Fig. 3, and eonning the bottom iiaps, B C, in place.

. To close the cover the top iiaps, KL, are bent inwardly on the lines 19 20, the top J on the line 15 and the closing flap M on the line 16, the latter being entered behind the front D. In this structure it will be observed that one bottom flap, as B, overlies its companion, as C, and that the two-are confined between said bottom and the lower edges,23 24, of the sides F II, thus being firmly secured4 fiatly upon said bottom, and held there against any tendency to curl up or project inwardly or toward the interior of the box in a position to abridge the cubieal area of the box or interfere with IOO the contents thereof, either in filling or removing the same. Such locking alsoiniparts such strength to the parts as to greatly reduce the tendency of the box sides to bulge or break away from their fastenings by reason of the pressure of its contents or from the strains due to handling.

The lockingtongues 1 2 are located at the free edge or extreme outer corners ofthe sides G I, and are secured by entering upwardly into the pockets 3 4, which are located at the back edge of the sides F H, said tongues thus having a considerable extension upward beyond the horizontal or upper incision forming said pockets, which affords a corresponding extent of lateral bearing-surface for them at the corners of said pockets formed by uniting the horizontal and vertical incisions constituting such pockets. By this structure of fast'- ening it will be observed that the extreme edges of the side iiaps G I are held snugly along the sides F H, thus affording no projection liable to curl up and be caught, and normally have little or no tendency to protrude or bend outward, while, when pressure is exerted from the interior, any tendency to bulge is counter-acted in both directions.

The locking-pocket, formed, as it is, by a Y, right-angular incision, is such that it may be pressed freely inward to admit the passage of thefockingtongue,andyetafford attherearend of its horizontal incision a wedge-like structure, into which the edge of the tongue may be forced, and thereby pinched and securely held against longitudinal displacement, whilethe free or wing part of the pocket does not weaken the holding-point against which the tongue presses, and is held against lateral displacement.

A blank consisting of the general rectangular form shown, having folding lines 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 and incisions 2l 22 17 18 19 20, whereby the folding parts necessary to constitute a box and cover are provided, and having the incisions forming the tongues 1 2 and pockets 3 4, whereby said parts are locked into hollowmor box form, substantially as described.

A box formed of a single piece of material cut, scored, and incised to form'the bottom A, bottom iiaps, B G, front D, back E, sides F G H I, locking-tongues 1 2, and locking-pockets 3 4, said parts being folded, so that the bottom flaps are confined between the bottom A and the lower edges of the sides F Hfsubstantially as described.

3. A box and cover formed of a single piece of material eut, scored, and ineised to form the bottom .A, bottomflaps, B C, front D, back E, sides. F G H I, top J, top closingfiaps, K L, tucking-fiap M, locking-tongues l 2, and locking-pockets 3 4, said parts being folded so that the bottom flaps are confined between the bottom A and lower edges of the sides F H, and the locking tongues and poele ets are arranged to confine the free edges of the sides G I, substantially as described.

4. A locking-pocket for the parts of boxes made from paper or similar material, the same being formed by a right-angular incision, whereby the locking-tongue is free to en-v ter, and is nipped securely at one edge, substantially as described.
