Description

(NoModL) L. HA AS.
BUILDING-WALL COMPOUND. m v No.- 293,010. Patented Feb. 5; 1884.
WI TJV ESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
"LEVI HAAS, OF CHESTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
BUILDING-WALL COMPOUND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,010, dated February 5, 1884.
Application filed March :2, 1583. (No model.)
fication, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in building-wallcompounds; and it consists in a process by which slag (the dross of furnaces) is employed as a substitute for stone and brick, and in. the process of forming fragmentary slag into suitable blocks for this purpose, and
in the molds A, substantially as hereinafter more fully described.
In carrying out my invention I take three parts of the slag of furnaces and one part of mortar, the mortar being made of one part lime and three and one-half parts of sand and one and one-half part of water, and this mortar I combine in a suitable proportion to permeate the mass with a cementing-mortar made of one pint of alkaline solution of flint, ten pints of sand, one pint of clay, and one pint of powdered flint. I then take this mass and cast it into rectangular-or cubical blocks by placing it into suitably-constructed molds. The blocks are then removed from the molds and dried. The materials thus combined produce a very hard and valuable building material at little cost.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view, and Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views.
The mold A is rectangular, and adapted for molding the compound into blocks or bricks.
,The lateral wallB of the mold is rigidly sei cured to the bot-tom C, and has adjustably affixed thereto the longitudinal sides D and e D by means of the hinges E E. The lateral 1 end F is hinged to the longitudinal wall D, and secured therein the staple h, which projects through the slot'of hinged hasp Gr,- secured to the longitudinal wall D, the parts being held together by pin 1?, as shown.
The partitions H and h are removably inserted into grooves formed in the bottom of the mold, and the longitudinal partitions h are recessed at a, to receivathe transverse partitions H, in order that the partitions may be readily displaced in removing the molded blocks; and to this end the walls B, D, D, and F are hinged together and secured by the hinged hasps G.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
1. A building material composed of three parts of furnace-slag and one part of mortar made of lime, sand, and water, and combined in suitable proportions with an additional cementing-mortar made of powdered flint, a1= kaline solution of flint, sand, and clay, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the mold-bottom C, 65 partitions H and h, walls B, D, D, and F, and hinged hasp G, substantially as shown,
and for" the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
