Description

' J. MOTT.
Stove. v N0. 292. Patented July 22, 1837.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' JORDAN L. MOTT, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
MANUFACTURING OF STOVES FOR BURNING ANTHRACITE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 292, dated July 22, 1837.
To all whom it may concern,
Be it known that I, JORDAN L. Mom, of the city of New York, have invented an Improvementv in the Mode of Making, or Manufacturing :Open Stoves for the Burning of Anthracite Coal, by which improvement such stoves can be afforded at a much lower price than similar stoves made in the ordinary way, while they are more solid and.
other advantages obtained.
Figure 1, in the accompanying drawing is a perspective view of the stove, and Fig. 2, a vertical section of it from front to back.
A, A, is the body of the stove.
B, is the feeder through which the fuel is to be supplied to the fire.
C, is an opening for a kettle, &c.; D, the smoke pipe; E, the grate bars, and the dotted line F, the position assumed by the upper surface of the fuel, when very small coal, such as is usually denominated nut or pea coal is employed, and which for summer use, especially, answers admirably well in stoves of this kind, the distance between the grate bars being adapted thereto.
Stoves of this description have hitherto had the body and feeder cast in several distinct parts, which have afterwards, been joined together by screws, rivets &c.
My improvement consists in casting the whole of the body and the feeder of stoves of this construction in one entire piece; and, in some instances, casting the bottom also in conjunction with the body and feeder, so as to constitute but one piece. The top I cast from a separate pattern; so that independently of the grate bars and the coverings of the openings at top, the whole stove consists of two, or at most of three pieces only.
I do not now make any claim to a stove of the form and construction of that herein referred to, having been in the habit of manufacturing such as are substantially the same in this particular; all that I claim he 1n The casting of the whole body of such a stove and its feeder, with the exception of the top and bottom, or in some cases, conjoined with the bottom, in one entire piece.
New York, June 1, 1837.
