SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,995, dated February 5, 1884.

Be it known that I, RILEY L. DAVIS, .of )Iooresville, in the county of Iredell and State of North Carolina, have invented a newand useful Improvement in Elevators, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to the class of elevators and adjustable scaffolds which are constructed according to the lazy-tongs-prin eiple,
and the invention consists of the novel arr. ngement and combination of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are side elevations of my improved elevator, taken from sides at right angles to each other; and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views.
A B O I) indicate four pairs of lazy-tongs arranged in the form of a quadrilateral prism, with the knees or joints to of each. pair connected to the knees or joints a of the two pairs adjacent thereto. These connections are made by forming the pivot b of one knee or joint with a flange or flanges, c, .at one end, which serve as a bearing for a pivot, I), of another knee or joint. Inside the extensible prism thus formed is arranged a fifth pair of lazytongs, E, which is set parallel with two of the pairs above described, and has its knees or joints a connected to the pivots I), located in the longitudinal axis of; the two other pairs of the four forming the prism. .The pivots bare likewise formed withflanges c at one end, between which the knees a of the pair E are pivoted. Thisfifth pair of lazy-tongs is provided with two series of continuous toggle-braces, F, arranged on opposite sides thereoflwith alternate knees e, connected to the pivots d, located in the longitudinal axis of the tongs E, and the intermediate knees,e, connected to the pivots d", located in the longitudinal axis of.

Instead of the toggle-braces F, two chains may be used, being extended and attached in the same manner-as the bars. The chains be ing positively connected to the tongs E and to the two tongs of the prism which are parallel with E,will tighten and brace the device when toggle-braces F are made to extend both above and below the prism formed by the tongs A B C D, and at their upper ends are eonnectedto a cross-rod, H, which is adapted to move in nut is rotated by the bevel'gears, the rod K is made to rise or sink through a perforation in the platform, the nut being supported by its connection to the latter, and the movement of the rod H thus produced causes the tongs E ,to extend or collapse, and by their connection with the braces and other tongs a like move ment is communicated to the latter. The lower end of the tongs E is pivoted in a base, Q, and is provided with vertically slotted guides It, in which moves a cross-rod, S, couneeted to the tongs E. The guides R are supported by the base Q.
\Vith the above construction the central tongs, E, serve to work the elevator, the other tongs and the braces serving to give strength and steadiness to the structure.
The tongs E may be made of iron to increase the strength, while the other parts may be made of wood.
Instead of the screw-rod K, for operating the tongs E, the power may be applied at the base in any well-known manner.
What I claim is l. The combination, with a pair of lazy-. tongs, of a number of additional pairs of lazytongs having their knees connected in a flexible manner to the knees of the former, or to 9 the knees of the former and to each other, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a pair of lazytongs, of four additional pairs of lazy-tongs arranged in the form of a quadrilateral prism around the former, and having their pivotal points connected in a flexible. manner to the pivotalpoints of the former and to each other, and the two series of continuous toggle-braces connected to the longitudinallycentral pivots of the main or central and two of the side lazytongs, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination, with the series of flexibly-connected lazy-tongs, of a platform supported on top of the central pair of lazytongs, and having slotted pendant-guides, a cross-rod connecting opposite joints of the said central pair and adapted to slide in said IO slotted guides, a screw-rod connected to said supported by the platform, and means for rov tating the nut, substantially as shown and described.
