GOLF GRIP GUIDE Filed July 12, 1957 INVENTOR. ALBERT J, CUTTHGI ,Atr TO \2 u EYS hire GOLF GRIP GUIDE Albert J. Cutting, Grosse Pointe, Mich. Application July 12, 1957, Serial No. 671,549
3 Claims. (Cl. 273-165) This invention relates to improvements in finger grips for attachment to the handle of a golf club shaft.
A primary object of the present invention is to provide means detachably associated with the handle or grip of a golf club shaft to aid the golfer in consistently posi- .club and to prevent his hands from slipping and to keep the club shaft from turning in the hands during the golfers swing.
A further important object of the present invention is to provide means for mounting the thumb cups and finger loop on the handle so that they can be adjusted. By adjusting the thumb cups to the right or left, the tendency to hook or slice can be overcome.
The foregoing and ancillary objects, including the provision of an inexpensive, sturdy and compact grip attachment for golf clubs, are attained by this invention, the preferred embodiment of which is set forth in the following description and illustrated in the attached drawing, wherein;
Figure l is a perspective view showing the grip attachment secured to the handle or grip of a golf club shaft;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 33 of Figure l, and,
Figures 4 and 5 are perspective views showing the ar rangement of the hands of a golfer in using the grip attachment.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, the numeral generally designates a conventional golf club having a handle or grip 12 to which the grip attachment 14 of this invention can. be detacbably and adjustably secured.
The grip attachment 14 includes three grip elements,
namely, thumb cups 16 and 18 for the thumbs of a golfer and a finger loop 20 for the little finger of the left hand or right hand, depending upon whether the golfer is left or right handed.
The thumb cups 16 and 18 are identically constructed and each includes a hollow cup 22 molded from rubber or plastic material and having a closed end 24 and'an open end 26. Integrally formed, as by molding, with each thumb cup is an elastic attaching band 28 which is adapted to encircle the club shaft in attaching the cups thereto. The band 28 is attached alongside each cup so as to mount the cups axially of and alongside the club shaft. The attaching bands or loops must be stretched over the club "rates Patent shaft and then, when released, will compress and tightly grip upon the shaft and prevent any movement of the cups.
The finger loop 20 is molded or otherwise formed from rubber and plastic material and is formed with an integral loop or band 30, similar in properties and use to the bands 28. The band 30 is disposed at right angles to the loop, so
as to position the loop vertically of and alongside the club handle. I
In attachment to the club handle, the thumb cups 16 and 18 are disposed in spaced apart relation in accordance with the size of the hands 32 of the golfer and are arranged in accordance with the golfers grip or, as thecase may be, the grip to be taught and practiced. The
Once positioned on the club handle, the cups and loop will not move or twist so that a firm and tight grip, free from slipping, can be obtained.
While the best known form of this invention has been shown and described herein, other forms may be realized, as come within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In combination with a golf club shaft having a handle end portion; a grip attachment comprising a pair ofsubstantially cylindrical elements, each of said elements having an open end and a closed end and being formed of an internal shape to receive and accommodate the thumbs of the hands of a user of the club, means laterally offset from and carried by each element mounting it on the handle end portion in a position so that it lies parallel with the handle end portion, said elements being disposed in axially spaced relation and substantially in axial alignment on the handle end portion with their openends facing in the same direction toward the free end of the handle end portion so as to receive the thumbs of the users hands as they are gripped around the handle end portion and an annular member having means arranged perpendicular thereto mounting it on the handle end portion adjacent the free end thereof, said annular member having its axis disposed at right angles tothe'axis of the handle end portion and being arranged on the handle end portion in a position substantially diametrically opposed to the cylindrical elements so as to receive the little finger on the upper hand of the user.
2. The combination of claim 1, wherein said molmting means for the cylindrical elements and the annular member comprise elastic bands adjustably circumposed on the handle end portion.
3. In combination with a golf club shaft having a handle end portion; a grip attachment comprising a pair of substantially cylindrical elements, each of said elements havingan open end and a closed end and being formed of an internal shape to receive and accommodate the thumbs of the hands of a user of the club, means laterally offset from and carried by each element mounting it on the handle end portion in a position so that it lies parallel with the handle end portion, said elements being disposed in axially spaced relation and substantially in axial alignment of the handle end portion with their open ends facing in the same direction toward the free end of the handle end portion so as to receive the thumbs of the users hands as they are gripped around the handle end portion, said mounting means for the cylindrical elements comprising elastic bands adjustably circurnposed on the handle end portion.
