United States atent O This invention relates to office equipment and more i especially to filing systems.

An object of the invention is to provide a simple, practical and eicient structure of the character described.

Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and inexpensive collapsible filing system for books, papers, records and the like.

A further object of the invention is to provide a unique filing system that can be quickly collapsed, closed and locked while containing the filed matter and quickly returned to Operating condition.

Other objects and advantages will appear and be brought out more fully in the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Figure l is a front elevation view of the filing system of this invention.

Figure 2 is a view, partly broken away, of the same shown in collapsed condition.

Figure 3 is a sectional view taken along the line 3-3 of Figure 1.

Figure 4 is a fragmentary view, enlarged, showing the base locking features of one of the partitions.

Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 5 showing the pivot connection of one of the partitions with the link bar.

Figure 8 is a fragmentary view, enlarged, showing the latch connection between the link bar and the cover member.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 10 refers generally to the filing system of this invention which comprises an elongated base plate member 11, a rear wall 12 and end walls 13 suitably secured thereto. A cover member 14 is secured to rear wall 12 as by hinges 15 and has an integral front wall extension 16. The aforementioned Components may be made of any suitable material, however sheet metal is particularly efficacous.

Angle members or legs 17 support base plate member 11 above a desk or table on which the filing system may be placed.

-A plurality of guides or spacers 18 are articulately secured to base member 11 and to a link bar 19. Each spacer 18 is of generally rectangular shape but may have its upper front corner cut o& as shown in Figure 3 to facilitate removal of filed papers or other matter. Each spacer is formed with a plurality of L-shaped retaining lugs 20 which extend through elongated slots 21 in base member 11. At the rear edge of each spacer 18 is a T- shaped lug 22 which extends through an angularly disposed slot 23 in link bar 19.` A pin 24 adjacent each end of cover 14 extends forwardly from the cover and has a shouldered groove 25, the pins each extending through a hole 26 in link bar 19. Lugs 20 may if desired be bent, and slots 21 be of a width, as shown in Figura 4 to permit the guides 18 to be collapsed as seen in Fgure 2.

The operation of the invention should be apparent from the foregoing description. The file is assembled by first inserting lugs 20 of the guides 18 in the slots 21 and lugs 22 inserted through slots 23 of link bar 19. The guides are tilted or inclined to the left to permit this latter step. The bar is then connected to pins 24, and the file is in Operating condition as seen in Figure 1. The file may be collapsed by merely releasing bar 19 from pins 24 and shifting to the position shown in Figure 2 and the cover 14 closed.

I claim:

A collapsible file comprising a flat, elongated base, a Wall member along a long edge of said base extending at a right angle thereto, a plurality of upstanding, spaced partitions having detachable hinged connection at right angles with said long edge of said base for rotation of the partitions to a substantially fiat overlapping position on said base, a link bar parallel to said long edge and having detchable pivotal connection with all of said partitions at points spaced from said hinged connections, said pivotal connections having axes parallel to the axes of said hinged connections, a cover member hingedly connected to said wall member on an axis transversely of the hinged connections of said partitions and along a line below the link bar when the partitions are uprght, and forming an extension of the wall member, said cover member adapted, when closed, to overlie the partitions in a collapsed state, and, when open, to extend vertically in an upright plane forming an extension of said wall member, said cover member lying parallel to and closely adjacent said link bar when the cover member is in open position, and interengaging means carried by said cover member and said link bar providing a latch connection between said link bar and cover member when the cover member is in open position to maintain said partitions and said cover member in substantially upright position.
