Description

I UNiTED STAT-Es? lDArfIeivT OFFICE. I
{Gusrnv L. JAEGER, on.Niiwronie xr.
PAPER Box.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,654, dated January 29,1884.
Application filed November 8, lSEl.
(No model.)
"To @ZZ whom, may concern.-
have invented new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes, of which the following is a` specification.
This invention relates to paper boxes ori 'packages for cigarettes'matches, and other, similar articles, and has for its object to provide afstrong, durable, and desirable article, i
which I accomplish in the manner and by the means hereinafter described, and specically pointed out inthe claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,`in which- Figure l is a top View of a box embodying my invention, the article being closed- Fig.
'2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is atopview,
showing the box open. nal section. composing the box. fication.
' Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. The letter A designates the body of the box,
Fig. et is a longitudi- `which is, in this example, of substantially rectangular shape or outline, and the opening of which is on one end and'a portion of the top adjacent to such end thereof, as shown in Fig. 4 at B.
The letter C indicates a flap, properly bent for closing the box-opening. This closing-hap C extends from the bottom of thebox at the proper point, and is constructed with a hook, C, to engage the top of the box, this hook being inserted into a slit, C, of the top, as shown in Fig. l, or the flap may be constructed to simply enter beneath the top to engage the latter, as shown in Fig. A6.
In a central line of the top of the closing-flap C is a slit, o, preferably curved, to form a thumb-piece, o', and on such flap are formed cheeks D, which, when the flap is put in place, embrace the sides of the box at points opposite to the top portion of the box-opening, as shown'` in Fig. 2. On the closing-nap C are also formed ears E, which are turned inward at points opposite to the end of the box, and are held in position by means of a tongue, E', beneath which the ears are adjusted, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the tongue being formed by making a slit in the iiap at the proper place.
Ihc top and the closedA endof the box are Fig. 5 is a plan view'of. the blank Fig. 6 illustrates a modiboth composed of ailap, F, properly bent, and o n this iiap are formed cheeks G, which embrace the sides of the box, similar to-thecheeks of the closing-nap D. Said cheeks G of the top and end iiap, however, are united to the sides of the box, the means employed for this purpose consisting of a double hook, H, formed on the cheeks, respectively, and a slit, I, formed in the box sides to receive and engage thehook, the latter being made elastic by a slit, s, exf tending inwardly at a point intermediatey ot' the jaws of the hook. On the top and end flap, F, are also formed ears J, which are turned inward at right angles opposite to the box end to lie against the box sides on the interior ot' the box, they being usually left detached.-
It will be perceived that by arranging the closing-Hap C to engage the top of the box itis shut sufficiently tight for any general purpose,
while it may be readilyT thrown back to expose I vflap, as well as the cheeks G of the top and end iiap, is to strengthen the sides ofthe box, the cheeks Galso serving to secure the top and end flap to the box sides.
The purpose of the ears or turned-in portions E of the closing-flap is to re-enforce such iiap, and that of the ears J of the top and end flap to assist in supporting the box sides, and by the arrangement of the ears lil-under the tongue E of the closingap they arer kept in place without gumming.
`The double hook H, together with the slit I, is a convenient means not only for connecting the cheeks Gr to the box sides, but also for connecting other parts of a paper box, it forming an extremely secure fastening wthoutthe use of gum.
' In the example shownthe thu1nb-piece o is formed in the top portion of the closing-flap G; butv it may be formed at any other suitable point, substantially inthe central line thereof,
and, instead of being curved, it may be angular.
entire box can be inade from a single blank cut out and folded in the proper inanner, and this construction thereof 'l'orlns an important feature of my invention.
That I elaini as new, and desire to secure b5 Letters Patent, is
l. A paper box having its opening at one end and at a portion of thetop adjacent to that end, and provided with a closing-Hap constructed at its free edge to engage the box top, and having a tongue-piece at or near its eentral line, a cheek-piece attached to each of its sides, and an ear-piece forming part of each cheek-piece and lying back on the closing-flap, and both ear-pieces engaged by the tongue piece, said check-pieces of the closing-Hap enibracing the sides ol' the box, substantially as described.
2. A paper box having its opening at one end and at a portion ci' the top adjacent to that end, and provided with a closing-Hap, C, constructed at its l'ree edge, to engage the box top, and having slots at or near its central line, l'orniing, respective] y, the tongue-piece F/ and thumb-piece o, said closing-flap also having at each side a cheek-piece, D, joined to an earpiece, E, turned back on the elosing-iiap, and both earpieces engaged by the tongue-piece, the cheek-pieces moving with the rc-eni'oreed iiap to embrace the sides of the box, substantially as described. A
3. A paper box having its opening at one end and at a portio-n oi' the top adjaeentto that end and the slit C2 in its top, and provided with the closing-flap C, having hook C on its free edge and a thumb-piece, o, back ol' such hook, substantially as described.
4. A paper box having its opening at one end and slots I in its opposite sides, and provided with a hook, II, respectively engaging the side slots, and at the other end with a closing-iiap, C, having its free edge provided with the hook C to engage the slot in the iiap F, substantially as described.
6. A paper box having slots I at its opposite sides and at one end provided with ears J, restinagainst the slotted sides, and the flap F, having a slot, C, and cheek-pieces G, each having a double hook, II, engaging one of the side slots, and at its other end provided with a closing-Hap, C, having cheek-pieces D, a thumb-piece, o', and a hook, C', at its free edge to engage the slot in the iiap F, substantially as described.
7. A paper box made from a single blank, having slots I in its sides, the ilap F, eonstruetcd with cheek-pieces G, provided with hooks II, and the closing-iap (l, provided with cheek-pieces D,and with means to engage the said flap F, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set iny hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
