SLIDE-AWAY DOOR STRUCTURE da.; @i
United States Patent O suon-AWAY nooR STRUCTURE Application March 6, 1957, Serial No. 644,306 1 Claim. (Cl. 126-190) l The present invention relates to ovens and more par ticularly to ovens of the type which are adapted to be inserted in a recess of a kitchen wall and which are more commonly known as built-in ovens.
The invention relates to the door structure of such a built-in oven, the present door being of the type which can be slid away to provide easier access to the oven for cleaning purposes.
An object of the present invention is to provide a sliding door for an oven which is simple in construction yet eilicient in operation.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a door with a hinge construction having a detent mechanism which holds the door ina position to be closed and another detent mechanism which holds the door in its closed position.
The invention consists of the novel constructions, arrangements, and devices to be hereinafter described and claimed for carrying out the above stated objects .and such other objects as will be apparent from the following description of a preferred embodiment of the invention, illustrated with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. l is a side view, partially in section, of the oven showing the door in its closed full line position and its open dotted line position;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the door slid away for storage thereof;
Fig. 3 is a top view, partially in section, showing the hinge structure and detent mechanism of the door;
Fig. 4 is a side view, partially in section, of the hinge structure and detent mechanism taken substantially on line 44 of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Referring now to the drawings, the oven 1 includes a box 2 disposed within `a housing 3. The housing 3 has a front panel 4 havin-g suitable controls f5 at the top thereof and having a recessed portion 6 adapted to re` ceive a door 7 for the box 2. `The door 7 has a handle 7a secured thereto. The vbox 2 has a plurality of brackets 8 xedly secured thereto. The brackets 8 space the box 2 from the housing 3 and are attached to abase plate 9 in the housing to provide a support for the box. Suitable insulation material s provided in the door 7 and in the `space between the box 2 and the housing 3. The rear wall of thebox 2 is provided with openings 10 for receiving heating elements (not shown) for the box.
The novel hinge and slide away structure for the door 7 comprises, in general, a track 12 secured to the side wall of the housing 3 in the space below the base plate 9 and a hinge bracket 13pivotally secured to the door 7 at one end thereof and having rollers 14 and V15 secured to the other-end thereof. The rollers 14 and 15 are disposed inthe track` 12. A flange portion 12a acts as a stop to limit outward travel of the rollers 14 and bracket 13. lt is understood that a similar hinge and track struc ture is provided on the other side of the oven. As seen in Fig. 3, the end of the bracket `13 on which the rollers 14 and 15 are mounted is otset from the end which is attached to the door 7 sothat the door can slide between the track members and into the space beneath the base plate 9.
The door 7 has a front wall 16 and a rear wall 17, and a bracket 18 is welded or otherwise secured to the rear wall 17. The bracket 18 is made of a at metal plate and is bent at one end to form a ange 219 and at its other end to form a channel-shaped portion 20. An opening 22 is provided in the flange 19; an opening 23 is provided in the channel-shaped portion 2G; an opening 24 is provided in the bracket member 13; and a pin 25 passes through these openings to secure the bracket member 13 to the bracket 18 and the door 7. A coil spring 26 surrounds the pin 25 and is attached at one end to the ilange 19 and at its other end to the bracket member 13. The spring 26 urges the door 7 to its closed position.
A detent mechanism 27 is provided for holding the door 7 in its closed position. The detent mechanism comprises a roller 29 disposed in a bifurcated member 30 which is slidable in a recess 32 of a housing 33 disposed within the channel-shaped portion 20 of the bracket member 18. The bifurcated member 30 has a shaft 34 extending through an opening 35 in the top of the housing 33 and a coil spring 36 is disposed between the housing 33 and bifurcated member 30 to urge the roller against a peripheral surface 37 on its bracket member 13. A notch 38 is provided in the bracket member 13 and the roller 29 moves into the notch 38 when the door 7 is moved to its closed position to retain the door at this position. When force is applied to the handle 7a of the door 7 to open it, the roller 29 will ride out of the notch 38.
When the door 7 is pivoted on the pin 25 to its open horizontal position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and in full lines in Fig. 4, the door remains in this position due to the fact that the channel Ztl of the bracket 18 acts as a support for the bracket member 13. A slot 39 is provided in the door 7 to receive the bracket member 13.
When in the open, horizontal position, the door 7 can be slid into the space beneath the plate'member 9 of the oven due to the mounting of the bracket 13 on the rollers 14 and 15. In order that the door 7 may effectively seal the recess 6 of the oven, the bracket member 13 must be at a definite point so that the door, when it is pivoted on the pin 25, will be in alignment With the recess 6. The detent mechanism 40 provides this definite pivot position. The detent mechanism 40 comprises a detent 42 in the track 12 adapted to receive a ball 43 pressed against .the track 12 by means of a spring 44. rllxe ball 43 and the spring 44 are disposed within a cylindrical housing 45 which is screw-threadedly attached to the bracket member 13.
When the door 7 is in its closed position, the roller 29 is spring pressed in the notch or detent 38 of the bracket member 13 and the ball 43 is spring pressed in the detent 42 of the track member 12. When the door is opened to bits horizontal position, the roller 29 is spring pressed against the periphery 37 ofthe bracket member 13, and the ball 42 is spring pressed against the detent 42. When the door is slid into the space beneath the plate 9 of the housing 3, the ball 43 is forced out of the detent 42 and remains in this position until the door is again slid out of the space to the door closing position when the ball will again enter the detent.
While I have described my invention in connection with one specific embodiment thereof, it is to be under-4 disposed Within a housingf and having the front sidef thereof substantially open, adoorlfor closingthe opening,
a space in saidehousing beneath said box-like member, a
hinge operatively connected to said door and to said housing adjacent said space, and means associated with said housing and said hinge to permit Vsaid door to be slid intoV said space, said means comprising track means on said housing. and extending from adjacent the front thereof to a point toward the rear thereof suiciently tol substantially provide for the entry of said door intoy said space, and roller means on said hinge operatively associated with said track, means associated with said hinge andtrack means for providing a stop for said rollerY means adjacent the front of said housing, a first releasadjacent the front of said housing in a denite pivot position during opening and closing of said door, and a second detent mechanism associated with said door and hinge means to retain said door in its closed position.
