UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CARL L. HORACK, OF BROOKLYN, NEV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE PROVIDENCE STEAM AND GAS-PIPE COMPANY, OF PROVIDENCE, R. I.
AUTOMATIC FIRE-EXTINGUISHER.
vSPECIIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,432, dated January 22, 1884.
C Application filed May E), 1881. (Model.)
To all whom. bmg/y concern.:
Be it known that I, CARL L. HoRAcK, ofthecity of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and use- 5 ful Improvement in Automatic Fire Extinguishers; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speci- 1o cation.
This invention has reference to that class of automatic lire-extinguishers in which the water is retained by a seal formed by soldering a cap over the discharge-orifices by a solder i 5 composed of a material that will melt at alow temperature, and thus release the seal on the breaking out of a fire and allow the water to be discharged on the fire. A
The invention consists in forming the dis- 2o tributer of a bent section of pipe perforated upon its outer curved side, the perforations being closed by a cap constructed to closely lit the perforated portion of said pipe.
Figure l is a View of an automatic lire-ex- 2 5 tinguisher consisting of a bent pipe, to eachl end of which a supply or connecting pipe is' secured, the bent pipe being perforated to form a distributer, and such perforations being covered by a closely-fitting cap or cover 3e soldered to the pipe by a solderV fusible at a low temperature. Fig. 2 is a sectional view, p showing the perforations in the tube. Fig. 3 is one ofthe closely-tting caps soldered to the perforated device shown in Fig. 1. Fig.
3 5 4 represents a piece of perforated pipe, showingv4 part of the perforations covered bya closely-itting cap secured by solder, part of the cap being broken away to show the perforations in the pipe.
In the drawings, a represents a perforated 4o sprinkler or distributer, constructed to dist-ribi ute the water in a spray on the iire.
bis a cap, made of such form as will closely t the distributer, so as to leave as littlespace as possible between the cap and the distrib- 45 uter. This cap is secured to the distributer by means of a solder fusible at a' low temperature, so that a water-tight joint is made and all possibility of a leak is prevented.
The object of making a cap to fit the dis- 5o tributer closely is to keep the water from contact withthe soldered joint or to reduce the quantity of water between the distributer and the cap, and thus prevent the absorption of heat by the water, and insure the promptac- 55 tion of the distributer in the case of fire. This distributer is strong and inexpensive, and may be readily applied to aline of pipe, and the cap can be easily and quickly applied to the distributer. v
I'prefer to solder the cap at the edges to the distributer; but the same may be secured by solder over the whole surface of the cap.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 65 y A distributer for fire-extinguishers, consisting, substantially as' before set forth, of abent section of pipe perforated upon its outer curved side, in combination with a cap constructed to closely iit the perforated portion 7o of the distributer andl be secured theron by GEO. S. EsPENsEHErn, RICHD. L. H. FINCH.
