Description
UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE.
WILLIAM CLEVELAND, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CURTAIN-FIXTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 29,242, dated July 24, 1860.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM CLEVELAND, of the city and State of New York, have 1nvented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Curtain- Fixtures; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure l is a perspective view of a window shade tted with my improvement and Fig. 2 is an elevation of my bracket with the rollers or sheaves therein.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
Shades or curtains have heretofore been fitted to roll up with a spring and a cord has served to pull the same down, in this instance thevcord attached to the center of the Slat at the bottom of the curtain has been an obstruction to the window and in cases where large plate glasses are used the cord through the center of the window is a great detriment to the appearance.
The nature of my said invention consists in a spring barrel suflicient to roll up the curtain when the weight of the slat is removed, combined with a weighted slat that is suHicient to overcome the spring and draw down the curtain and with double cords arranged over pulleys or sheaves in such a manner that the weighted slat can be lifted at both ends while the spring keeps the curtain rolled up, or upon allowing the weighted slat to descend it draws the curtain down against the action of the spring.
In the drawing a, represents the window casing of any desired character, b, is the spring blind or curtain roller, c, is the weighted slat; d, e, are cords attached to the respective ends of said slat and passing over the rollers or sheaves f, f', and thence to the clamp g. The sheave f is single and that f is double so as to pass the two cords at that side to the clamp g. It will be seen that the cord e, crosses near the under side of the roller b; and by pulling on the cords d, e, the slat c, will be raised and the spring roller winds the blind or curtain onto it; or vice versa. The brackets receiving the ends of the roller and sheaves are to be attached to the window casing in any convenient manner, and for this purpose may stand out from said casing or hang from the lintel or head of the window, or be screwed onto the side of the casing as seen in the drawing.
By this arrangement of devices for raising or lowering the curtain, the cords do not come in the way of the window and are kept out of sight as much as possible so as not to detract from the handsome appearance of the curtain itself or the window to which it is applied; and from the pulleys f, the cords may be led away to any convenient part of the store or room and there made fast.
lThat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The brackets and sheaves f, f', and cords (Z, e, in combination with the spring roller b, and weighted slat c, in the manner and for the purposes specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this second day of July 1860.
WILLIAM CLEVELAND.
