M. HATHAVAY, OF NEV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR-F ONE-HALF TO CHARLES O. KEELER, OF SAMEv PLACE.
CAR-BRAKE.`
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,429, dated January 22, 18%24,
' Application filed August Sl, 1883. (No modul.) I
Tn all whom it 711,04/ concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. HATHAWAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and'Sta-te of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Brakes; and I do de- Clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the vart to which it appertains 1o to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingv drawings, and to the letters and'gures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relatesv to lcertain improvements in brakes for railroad-cars; and it has for its objects to provide for automatically braking the wheels by the momentum of the cars when stopping, for automatically releasing the brakes when their use is not required,
2O and for backing the cars after or before the ,brakes have been applied to arrest their forward movement, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, inl 2 5 whichl Figure l represents abottom plan view of a portion of a, car, showing my invention attached; Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional View, Fig. 3, ai sectional view of the mechanism 3o mounted on the axle; Fig. 4, a perspective view of the same; Fig. 5, a similar View, showing the pivoted clamps or jaws in an open position; `and Fig. 6, a vertical sectional view of the same, showing the position of the rollers and cam-recesses.
The letter A indicates one of the trucks of the car, which may be of the ordinary or any approved construction, and'mounted upon the axles of the wheels B, as usual.
The letter' C indicates the brake-bar's,\vhich extend transversely under the car parallel with the transverse beams of the truck, the said brake-bars being swung upon hinges D, pivoted to the trucks at E. To the said brake-bars are secured the studs F,which are slotted and have fulcrumed to them the levers G, one of which is pivoted at H to the truck, as shown. rlhe other lever has secured to it one end of a chain, I, the other end of which is attached to a loose collar,K,whicl1 is mounted upon a loose 5o head, L, surrounding the axle of the car. The
that they may b e clamped or tightened theret on, as more fully hereinaftenapecied, to brake 6o the wheels. The clamps,l at their forward ends, are embraced bytwopivoted levers,U, one of which is pivoted to the end of a short bar, V, which is adapted to slide in a bearing, lV, secured to the bottom of the-car, the said bar being pressed forward,A normally by means of a spiral spring, X. The said bar is'` provided with a screw-nut, w, which may be screwed up against the spring, so as to adjust the tension of the device. The other leverlias pivoted to 7o its end a bar,Y,which extends to near the end of the draw-head Z, which is arranged to slide in bearings A, secured to the bottom of the car, andv held normallyforward by means of the spiral spring B. The lever is slotted at C', and 7 5 into it sets one end of a bent lever, which is fulcrumed at D, the operating end of which extends above the platform, so that the forward end of the vslotted lever may be so moved as to throw it into and out of contact with the draw- 8o head, and thus automatically set the brakes or release them, as more fully hereinafter specified. The head L is provided with aflange, E', which has at its periphery a series of in clined recesses, F', in which are set the loose 8 5 rollers G, and which set within the collar K 'in such manner as to` permit the collar ,and
head to travel freely and independently in one direction, and clamp when traveling in the opposite direction.
The letter I indicates a chain connecting one of the levers G with the ordinary brake-shaft, K, which extends upward through the platform, and is provided with the usual brakewheel, L. Y
The operation of my invention will be readily understood from the above description, and is as follows: Vhen the train is going forward, the draw-head is in anormal position; but upon slaekcning or stopping, the drawheads are forced together, throwing the level' back, closing the jaws or clamps upon the iixed wheel, causing the collar to turn and wind up the chain. and thus automatically apply the brakes. rlhe brakes are released when the engine is started up, and the pressure 011 the draw-head removed; or they may be released by throwing back thelever, so as to freeit from contact with the draw-head. Then required tobael; thetrain, the collar turns freely on the head, permitting the axle to revolve freely.
Having thus described myinvention, whatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. rl`he combination, with the axle of a car, of a loose head mounted thereon, and provided with pivoted jaws or clamps adapted to enibrace a fixed wheel on the axle, and suitable mechanism for operating said clamps, the head being provided with a collar movable in only one direction, and connected to the brakebeam levers by means of a chain, whereby the brakes may be automatically operated, substantially as specified.
2. rlhe combination, with the axle of a car, of the loose head, the loose collar mounted thereon, the chain and brake-levers, the pivoted levers embracing the clamps, forwardlyextending slotted lever, and the operating-lever and sliding` draw-head, arranged to operate substantially in the manner specified.
3. The combination, with the axle of the car and the fixed wheel thereon, of the loose head and the pivoted clamps, the springs by which they are pressed apart normally, and the clamping-levers and their operating mechanism, the whole arranged and adapted 1o operate substantially as set forth.
l. The combination, with the clamp pivoted to'the loose head mounted on the axle ofthe car, of the pivoted embracing-levers, the springbar to which one of said levers is secured, the slotted lever pivoted to one of said levers, the operating-lever working in a slot in the same,
and the sliding draw-head adapted to operate the levers to automatically brake the wheels, substantially as specified.
5. The combination, with the bar to which one of the clamping-levers is attached, and the clamping-levers, ot' the spiral spring and adjusting-nut, whereby the tension of the spring is regulated, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
