SPECILFICATION forming part of Letters hPatent No. 292,380, dated January 2 2, 1884. Application tiled June 11, 1883. (No model.) V
.To a/ZZ whom, tm/ay con/cern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. STEvENsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing'at Upper Sandusky7 in the county of Wyandot and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in OonnectinglRods; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or gures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a side view. Fig.
2 is a horizontal section, and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views.
This invention has relation to devices for adjusting the boxes of connecting-rods or pitmen; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letterA designates the end of a pitman or connectingrod, having thel loop-strap B connected thereto by bolts C, passing through perforations d of the strap.
E E are the boxes, which are anged at f, and are seated in the opening or slot of the strap near its outer end, the outer box, E, being in contact with the end g of the strap and the inner box adjacent thereto. Between the inner box, E', and the end h of the pitlnan is vmove in contact therewith when operated by means of an adjusting-screw, P, which engages the threaded perforation of the nut. B
indicates a central vertical offset of the face of the nut, whereby its middle portion is thick.- ened toprovide material for and to centralize v the threaded aperture of the nut, and the wedgeform block K is conformably recessed at t to accommodate the offset R. By this offset it will be seen that the threaded perforation is formed the full length of the nut, and the latter strengthened at a point where great strength is required. It also serves as a guide for the nut N in its vertical movement. The screw P is formed with a squared or hexagonal head, s, whereby it is turned in adj ustingi the wedge-nut N. It is secured in position by means of a nut, w, which engages the end of the screw which projects through the lower arm'of the strap. The screw P in this manner forms a bolt through the strap,
(near the boxes) so that it is prevented from spreading. By turning the screw P to the right the wedge nut is operated to crowd the longer wedge-form slide K toward the boxes, which are therebytightened upon the wrist. Toloosen them, the adj Listing-screw is turned inthe opposite direction. The adjustment is effected with accuracy and ease.
Pitmen and connecting-rods with' adjusting-screws have been provided with inclined nuts and slides for adjusting their boxes, and I therefore do not claim such, broadly.
Having described this invention, what I claim, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, lS--f- The combination, with the strap of a pit- Inan or connecting rod, of the adjustable nut vN, having the inclined bearing and vertical GEORGE is. sTEvENsoN.
