SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,353, dated January 22, 18 84.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Bonus N. PRATT, of Hart-ford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam Valves, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, where- Figure 1 is a side View of my improved valve, parts being cut away and othersin section. Fig. 2 is a side viewof same, with part cut away to show interior of body. Fig. 3 is a detail rear view of the carrier-block. Fig. 4 is a detailfront view of same. Fig. 5is aview in vertical longitudinal section on a plane at right angles to the plane of view of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a detail edge view of the flap, showing the sidemortises. Fig. 7 is a detail top view of the flap. My improvement relates to the class of steam-valves in which the flap or valve is pivoted within the body of the valve and operated by a spindle arranged at an angle to the valve-seat. 7
It consists of the devices used to close the l steamway securely, and to-make the valve readily operative under the back pressure upon thehinged flap.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter a denotes the body of a valve asa whole; I), a vertical branch, (with usual stuffing-box,) in which the spindle c and carrier-block (Z are arranged to operate; 6, an angularbranc-h opposite and giving access to the flap f when the Valve is inserted in a line of pipe, The flap f is piyoted to the body a, and bears the. rotary disk g, that covers the steamway h in the inclined valve-seat i. The stem gof the rotary disk 9 has a slotted head, by which the disk may be ground to its seat by meansof a screw-driver inserted through the branch 6.
The flanged foot of the spindle c fits in the laterally-open socket in the top of the carrierblock, and by this means the spindle can rotate freely in moving the block to open and close the valve. The carrier-block d'is cut away centrally below the socket, (see Figs. 1, 3, and 4,) for the free passage of the stem 9 of the valve, forming what may be called the 7 5o wings 7c of the block. edges of these wings are parallel with each other and with the axis of the spindle, the front edges,d,being in sliding contact with the guides a and the rear 'edges,k,bearing against the guides (i formed on the inner side of the valve-body. These guides are parallel with each other, and may be called vertical, as shown in the drawings.
Upon the inner sides of the wings 7c are lugs k that take into 'mortises f on each side of the flap j, and by means of these the flap is raised and lowered as the carrier-block is reciprocated by the spindle. The parts of the wings of the block forming the bearings k are thrown out laterally slightly beyond the sides, and the part (1 of each-wing, justinside the vertical bearing-faces, is inclined to the plane of the front bearings, 01, forming with them a wedge, the rear or under side of which bears upon the back of the flap on either side This construction of the back of the block dis shown in detail in Fig. 3, and also in Fig. 2, where a part of the nearest wing is cut away to show the surface (1 in contact with the back of the flap.
Devices similar to the wedge have been used in sliding valves; but under back-pressurethe block with the wedge feature alone is apt to spring the spindle and jam. The same defect would existin my form of valve, in which a pivoted flap is used; but I remedy it by means of the wing-bearings and guides in the body.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a steam-valve, in combination, body (1, having branches b and e and inclined valve- 8 5 seat i, hinged flap f, bearing a rotary disk, 9, and a carrier-block, d, provided with front and rear bearings, and reciprocated between guides by means of spindle c, all substantially as de scribed.
2. In a steam-valve, a carrier-block having bearingsurfaces adapted to work between guides within the valve-body, and also an inclined bearing, forming with the front bearing a wedge between the valve body and the hinged flap, all substantially as described.
