UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVALTER S. PAYNE, OE TITUSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
SERVICE-COCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,349, dated January 22, 1884.
- Application filed August 9, 1852. Renewed December 20, 1883. (No model.)
1'0 tall whom-it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER S. PAYNE, of
State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Service- Cocks; and I do hereby declare that the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form'a part of this specification.
Figure l is a longitudinal vertical sectional view. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section on the line x a, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 shows in perspective the several parts constituting my invention detached from each other.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invent-ion relates to what is known as a corporation-cock, which isused for shutting off water at the street-main while making connection to the cock at the sidewalk, or in case the service-pipe in the street between the main and the curb-boxshould burst; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents a ring having an interior screw-thread, and provided at one end with a flange, B.
G is a short exteriorly-threaded piece of pipe, terminating in a bulb, D, which is closed by a plate, E, the projecting edge of which forms a flange, F. The face of plate E is ground true, and is provided with a series of radial slots, G.
H is a short threaded pipe, of the same diameter as pipe 0, and terminating, like the latter, in' an enlarged chamber, I, which is screw-threaded on the outside, as at J, so as to be capable of being screwed into the ring or band A.
Between the pipe H and chamberIis formed a seat, K, to receive a wrench, by which the cock may be operated. The chamber I is closed by a plate, L, which is ground true, so as to correspond with the plate E previously described, and provided with a series of slots, M, which may be made to register with the slots G. The face of plate L is provided with a forward-projecting stud, N, fitting in a notch, O, in the flange I of plate E. thus permitting said plate L to be turned sufficiently to cause the slots G M to register, or to close them, as the case may be. The pipe 0 is passed through ringA until the flange F abuts against the flange B of said ring. The enlarged portion orchamber I of pipe H is then inserted into the ring, and screwed down until the, face-plates E L are closely in contact with each other, the stud N fitting, as described, in notch O. The cock, which is suitably connected to the service-pipe, may-be opened or closed by applying a wrench to seat K and turning it slightly. The pressure of water keeps the cock packed by forcing the faceplates L E in contact with each other, and said slotted plates also serve to prevent any gross, impurities-such as fishto enter the service-pipe from the street-main.
My improved service-cook is simple, convenient, light, .and inexpensive, and is not liable under any circumstances to get out of order.
I claim and desire to secureby Letters Patent of the United -States As an improvement in service-cocks, the combination of the ring A, having flange B, pipe 0, having bulb D, closed by a radially slotted plate, E, having flange F, provided with notchO, andthe pipeH, having exteriorlythreaded enlarged portion or chamber I, seat K, and radially-slotted plate L, havingstud N, all arranged and operating substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WVALTER S. PAYNE.
IVitnesses:
J OHN ONEILL, JOHN W. DOOLEY.
